-Circular Plastics Alliance: A step closer to 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics

The Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), which gathers 245 public and private actors covering the whole plastics value chains, has delivered its first actions.

Those delivered actions pursue the Alliance’s objective: to reach the target of 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics used in products by 2025. They include a work plan on design-for-recycling of plastic products, which lists 19 plastic products that the Alliance will make more recyclable; a report on collected and sorted plastic waste in the EU, presenting the current state of play; and an R&D agenda for circular plastics.

As a next step, in January 2021, the CPA will deliver three more actions, including a monitoring system to track the plastics materials flows in Europe; a report on the untapped potential for more collection, sorting and recycling of plastic waste and the necessary improvements to reach the 10 million tonnes target; and a mapping of the related investment needs.

-Packaging Recyclability and Flexible Packaging

The Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR) wants to ensure the health and economic success of the plastics recycling industry by providing critical guidance. The challenges of flexible packaging are pushing new innovations. Petrochemical SustainableSources Film

Sandi Childs, Director of Film and Flexible Programs at APR, spoke at today’s Innovation Stage presentation and said, “The entire supply chain has to work together to increase the supply of plastics available to be recycled, enhance the quality of the material that’s expected to go back into the marketplace, and ensure that there’s adequate demand for products made from recycled plastics.”

Childs also said that “a package doesn’t have to be ugly or brown in order to be ‘green.’ It can still be sexy and functional and lots of fun.” To that end the APR has created the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability.

-German economic sentiment dips on weakening growth hopes amid pandemic resurgence

Economic sentiment in Germany fell sharply in November, with growth expectations weakening for the country and the eurozone as growing coronavirus infection numbers across Europe slowed growth and forced more countries back into lockdown.

German financial market sentiment cooled by a total of 38.4 points to 39 points between September and November in Zew’s monthly survey of financial market sentiment.

The outlook for the eurozone weakened to 32.8 points over the same period.

Financial markets are increasingly concerned about the slowdown in Germany’s economic recovery, compounded by the lockdown measures adopted domestically and across a growing swathe of EU countries. Petrochemical SustainableSources Film

-Citibank Forecasts $49 WTI For 2021

Citi revised down on Monday its outlook for the WTI Crude price for next year by $5 to $49 a barrel, citing the global spike in coronavirus cases that is set to impact oil demand.

Citi Research also cut its estimate for Brent Crude by $5 a barrel to $54 per barrel, Reuters quoted the bank as saying in a note on Monday.

Two months ago, Citi was expecting oil prices to recover to $60 a barrel by the end of next year as the oversupply will have been drawn down by then, as major investment banks and analysts were fairly bullish on oil. Petrochemical SustainableSources Film

However, the surge in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks and the renewed lockdowns and curfews in major European economies—including France, the UK, Italy, and Germany—are pressuring oil prices downwards as the rebalancing of the oil market is once again slipping to a later than initially expected time.

-Avient launches Artisan high-gloss, pre-coloured thermoplastics for paint replacement

Avient Corporation, a premier provider of specialised and sustainable material solutions and services, today introduced its newest sustainable material family: Artisan thermoplastics.

Targeted at products for the consumer market, Artisan nylon (PA6) is the first material in a series of high-gloss, scratch-resistant, pre-coloured thermoplastics formulated to replace paint. Petrochemical SustainableSources Film

Parts moulded from Artisan pre-coloured thermoplastics offer excellent scratch resistance compared to painted plastic and minimise the appearance of scratches. Replacing painted metal parts with Artisan materials also improves corrosion resistance. These thermoplastics bring two added benefits: because there is no painting process required, energy use is reduced and VOCs are eliminated. Outdoor consumer applications where superior aesthetics, UV resistance, and high performance are critical, such as powersports, lawn and garden, and marine body panels and housings, are suitable candidates for customised Artisan formulations.
