-Agilyx has big plans for chemical recycling of acrylic scrap

US firm Agilyx Corporation is collaborating with Lucite International to establish a commercial-scale trial for the recycling of PMMA, commonly known as acrylic.

The proposed site is to be built in Europe, with commercial production scheduled to start in 2023. This move follows the success of an initial smaller-scale trial using Agilyx’s molecular recycling technology with the support of parent company, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.

Partner Lucite International specialises in the design, development and manufacture of acrylic-based products and is also part of the Mitsubishi group.

Circular Economy: reshaping Europe’s textile industry

Business Planet heads to Italy to see how an innovative project is attempting to boost Europe’s Circular Economy.Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

Founded almost a century ago near Monza, Parà specialises in textiles – the firm makes acrylic awnings and outdoor furniture. The company is proud of its heritage and the quality of its products, some of which adorned the White House during the Obama presidency.

But it is also fully aware of the environmental impact that textile manufacturing has on the planet and wants to help find a solution. The company’s CEO Matteo Parravicini says the company has been aware of these environmental issues for a long time:

“Parà has always pursued a policy of respect for natural resources. In fact, Parà has invested in a water and a wastewater treatment plant, a cogeneration plant to obtain hot water and steam for its sites, and a photovoltaic plant to obtain clean solar energy. This is Parà.”

-Different development of nylon 6 DTY and FDY

In October, it is the second time in the year of 2020 when nylon filament factories have intensively reduced their inventory burden. The last time happened in April when the demand for mask ear straps broke out. But there is a fundamental difference between the two waves of price increase and destock.Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

When the demand for mask ear straps burst out in April, the demand for DTY coarse denier yarns surged, which incidentally benefited its upstream product POY. However, the traditional demand areas did recover in April 2020 due to the severe pandemic situation around the world. So that other markets such as FDY and HOY were almost stagnated. In October, the market has been mainly driven up by actual demand along with external news. The transaction situation of various products has improved, but the market preference is different, and the degree of increase in price and sales also varies.

-Ascend ups intermediates prices for third month running

Ascend Performance Materials (Houston) has announced a price rise for adiponitrile (ADN), acrylonitrile, adipic acid, and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), effective immediately or as contracts allow. The company has hiked its prices for the same products in each of the last two months, said Chemweek. Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

The prices of adiponitrile and HMDA have each been hiked by $600/metric ton, while acrylonitrile and adipic acid have both been increased by USD200/metric ton.

As MRC informed earlier, Ascend Performance Materials has made their new mask technology available to the public for purchase. In July, NorthEscambia.com first reported that Ascend developed a new mask technology that protect against  SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, and the material to make it is manufactured at the company’s North Escambia facility on Old Chemstrand Road.

-ELIX Polymers certified with ISCC PLUS for production of circular ABS

First producer of ABS and ABS blends that is certified with ISCC PLUS

ELIX Polymers, a leading manufacturer of ABS resins and derivatives in Europe, has obtained the ISCC PLUS certification for their production facility in Tarragona. This achievement is an important milestone in their sustainability strategy and for promoting the transformation of the value chain towards a circular economy model and reducing their ecological footprint. The circular monomer styrene certified under ISCC PLUS, comes from suppliers that use sustainable sources (e.g. thermal cracking of decomposed waste plastic oil) for its production.Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

ELIX is the first producer of ABS and ABS blends that is certified with the ISCC PLUS, the certified mass balance approach. The product portfolio certified by ISCC PLUS is identical to ELIX regular high-quality products and their properties.

-Biden win to ease US-China trade tensions – a boon for petrochemicals

A changing of the guard in the US early next year could diffuse heightened trade tensions with China which have been disrupting petrochemical markets for two-and-a-half years.

Barring any untoward incident, Democrat Joe Biden will take over the helm of the world’s biggest economy from Republican Donald Trump on 20 January 2021.

Heavily criticised over his administration’s handling of the pandemic, Trump failed to secure a second four-year term as US president. Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

-Greiner Packaging extends range of recycled materials

Tests are currently under way for the dairy industry to see how PET can tolerate temperatures of up to 120C during HTS. Pic: Greiner Packaging

While polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) are the most commonly used materials in the dairy packaging industry, some of the recyclates from both materials still lack approval for use in food packaging and have only limited availability.

However, r-PET (recycled polyethylene) is readily available through existing bottle recycling streams, but has so far been largely unsuitable for dairy packaging due to its material properties. Petrochemical SustainableSources PHA

Where high temperature sterilization (HTS) is required, PET has to withstand temperatures of up to 120°C. With initial tests for the use of r-PET HTS in packaging for dairy products, Greiner Packaging is expanding its material competence and adding another component.

At the moment, r-PET is the only food-approved recycled material, while r-PS and r-PP are still in the test and approval phase. It is therefore important to provide dairies with a recycled material that can withstand the necessary production processes.
