-PE market remain in consolidation

October comes to an end, PE market remains in consolidation, petrochemical plants and traders offer accordingly. Downstream demand is healthy, and trading is relatively good.

In the late market, the market is basically caught in the game of “continuous startup of new capacity” and “the support from rigid demand”, and the fluctuating pattern is more difficult to change.

First, let’s talk about the new start-ups.

2.7 million tons of new production capacity has been released in the first 10 months of this year. Among them, the products of Sinochem Quanzhou and Zhongke (Guangdong) Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. are officially put on the market in mid-October.

n fact, looking back at the market price in 2020, each round of new start-ups has affected the market to some extent, causing spot prices to drop slightly.

In November and December, 1.5 million tons of new plants are planned to be put into operation, including 800kt/year plant of Wanhua Chemical Group Co.,Ltd. and 400kt/year plant of Haiguolongyou(Daqing Lianyi), as well as 300kt/year plant of Shaanxi Yanchang ChinaCoal II. Wanhua Chemical Group Co.,Ltd. has started up its PE plant in late-Sep, and may start up its upstream cracker recently.

-ACN price trend forecast in Nov

Since Sep, ACN market maintained steady all the time. Prices moved up somewhat in end Sep stimulated by the maintenance of PetroChina Fushun, and later, prices stabilized again in Oct. The main reason was the balance between bulls and bears. In end Sep, this balance was broken affected by the maintenance plan of PetroChina Fushun, and bulls began to pull up prices. But some traders considered that the prices were dull to rise in Oct, and low offers continued to see, restraining the high prices. Therefore, the market returned to stabilize in Oct.Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

In Nov, from the view of feedstock market, propylene prices in Shandong has declined by 400yuan/mt to 7,100yuan/mt. Based on this, ACN costs are assessed at around 9,100uiam/mt, then some prices already see profits. Currently, propylene supply is relatively sufficient, and the upward space is limited, prices are supposed to be in weak consolidation in Nov.

-PACCOR gives plastic packaging a digital identity

As part of an environmentally friendly recycling system, PACCOR, the leading international player in the packaging industry, has introduced plastic packaging solutions with digital identity provided by Digimarc Corporation. This innovation enables the correct identification of each package throughout the value chain. This is a big step into the recycling economy, because for the first time it is now possible to differentiate between food and non-food packaging and to achieve high-quality sorting.

Visually imperceptible barcode helps sort all kinds of plastics

“As one of the leading manufacturers of packaging, we want to close the material loop by enabling full recyclability of our products.

Therefore we have set ourselves the goal of minimizing packaging waste, conserving resources and saving energy wherever possible,“ says Andreas Schuette, Chief Executive Officer at PACCOR. Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

-Europe chemicals unfazed by lockdowns but second wave’s virulence dents confidence

A second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is touching all corners of Europe, with the east hit hard and lockdown measures implemented across the board as the only way to protect health systems from collapse.Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

The renewed rapid spread of the virus even threatens now the health system in Germany, a country widely praised so far for its test-and-trace system which had kept cases well under those elsewhere in the eurozone.

Germany, with a population of 80m, has a one-month partial lockdown. Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke of a “dramatic situation” in hospitals if the curve of infection is not brought under control.

-Avery Dennison joins industry leaders to form new consortium to drive matrix and liner recycling solutions

Avery Dennison Corporation has joined with other leaders in the pressure sensitive label (PSL) industry to form the Circular Economy for Labels (CELAB) consortium. The consortium aims to offer solutions and provide education throughout the industry to enable matrix and release liner recycling. Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

Currently only 52 percent of matrix and liner waste is recycled globally. CELAB is catalyzing a unified effort to accelerate matrix and liner recycling industry-wide to create greater circularity for labeling products. This aligns to Avery Dennison’s sustainability commitments to address waste, including 2025 targets to ensure its operations will be 95% landfill-free, 75% of the company’s waste is repurposed, and that the company helps customers reduce the waste from Avery Dennison products by 70%.

-Geofabrics partners with Visy to drive a no waste circular economy for PET

Two Australian manufacturing companies partnering to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste to landfill

Recycled PET that would otherwise end up in landfill will be re-used in Australia’s infrastructure  Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

Every 10,000 tonnes of waste recycled helps our economy by creating 9.2 Australian jobs

Geofabrics has signed a multi-year partnership with Visy to reduce the number of plastic bottles going into landfill. With 1 billion plastic water bottles purchased every year, Australians are creating 660,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually . And whilst PET has its place in food packaging, the two companies are working together to ensure that the material ends up in a circular economy, where PET is either recycled or reused.

Visy uses food grade Recycled PET (rPET) in the manufacture of its plastic bottles. In this partnership, the rPET that is not fit for Visy’s bottle-to-bottle recycling will be purchased by Geofabrics to make sustainable geotextiles for use in Australia’s road, rail, and mining industries.

-ALPLA: In-house production drastically reduces CO2 emissions

Around the world, ALPLA operates 71 of 181 production facilities as in-house plants, right next door to the customers. These plants avoided around 43,000 tonnes of CO2e in 2019, which is the equivalent of 13,000 flights from Vienna to Rio de Janeiro.

It is currently being traded as the ‘new currency’ because its significance – or better said, its impact – is so vastly important in our times: CO2. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming. This warming has to be – and for experts, this is a certainty – curbed as swiftly as possible. Otherwise it will end in a climatic catastrophe with a devastating impact on our planet, such as droughts or rising sea levels. Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

Transport and energy and heating supplies produce the most greenhouse gases. Whoever reduces the production of these gases is making a significant contribution to counter climate change. ‘From this perspective, we have looked at our in-house plants and come to a staggering conclusion,’ reports Linda Staib, Sustainability Manager at ALPLA. ‘Our 71 in-house plants avoided 43,000 tonnes of CO2 or carbon equivalent in 2019.’

-Biased interpretation of EEA study on biodegradable and compostable plastics draws wrong image of immature consumer

The European Environment Agency (EEA) recently published its new report “Biodegradable and compostable plastics – challenges and opportunities”. The report highlights many positive aspects of biodegradable and compostable plastics. Unfortunately, its interpretation in several media outlets focused exclusively on the few critical assumptions the report makes regarding consumer perception.Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

This resulted in a distorted picture of biodegradable and compostable plastics that doesn’t reflect the general statement of the report. Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

Therefore, in a press release, European Bioplastics (EUBP) underlined the need to acknowledge successful precedents in the deployment of these innovative materials in collaboration with a receptive community of consumers.

-PET bottles becoming more environmentally friendly

Closed material cycles are the key to an environmentally friendly and responsible use of plastic products, according to a new study by the Society for Packaging Market Research (GVM).

The recycling of PET beverage bottles, in particular, has emerged as a role model in recent years. Petrochemical Waste Recycling Biofuel

According to the study, 94 per cent of all PET beverage bottles are recycled, and the recycling rate is almost 100 per cent. There is also a clear trend towards the use of recycled material. A PET bottle today consists of an average of 30 per cent recycled material.

Dr Isabell Schmidt, Managing Director at IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen eV, said: “High recycling rates and the use of recycled material in PET beverage bottles have been standard in Germany for years. This means that the German cycle system is a prime example of efficient recycling structures in an international comparison.”
