-Mechanical and chemical recycling of solid plastic waste

The lifecycle of polymers The lifecycle of polymer materials can be described by the scheme in Figure 1: raw materials – be they virgin or recycled – are transformed into products via the various converting techniques (injection moulding, extrusion, etc.). This is the start-of-life phase for the (consumer) product. During the manufacturing process, a first type of solid plastic waste (SPW) is generated: post-industrial (PI) waste, which never makes it to the consumer. This could include runners from injection moulding, waste from production changeovers, fall-out products, cuttings and trimmings. Typically PI waste has the distinct advantages that it is clean and the composition of the polymer is known

Quite often, these waste streams are also monostreams, meaning they are uncontaminated by other polymers or non-polymers. In terms of recycling, these are often the higher-quality grades of polymer waste.

At end-of-life, the product is disposed and becomes post-consumer (PC) waste. Depending on the country, PC plastic waste is collected separately or not. If it is, the different regional collection schemes vary from very strict (such as the PMD1 scheme in Belgium) to very open (such as the orange bags allowing all packaging waste in the Netherlands). Typically, PC plastic waste consists of mixed plastics of unknown composition and is potentially contaminated by organic fractions (such as food remains) or non-polymer inorganic fractions (such as paper) , which makes it a more complex stream to recycle than PI waste.

-Magna posts $647 million Q2 net loss, but sees improvement coming

Canadian auto supplier Magna International Inc. joined many of its North American peers in reporting a massive drop in revenue and posting a sizable loss for the second quarter, but showed signs of progress toward the end of the quarter as auto production resumed amid the pandemic. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

Magna on Friday said it swung to a net loss of $647 million from a gain of $452 million during the same quarter last year. Total sales plunged about 58 percent to $4.29 billion, but topped estimates of $4.10 billion.

-How plastics could help build a sustainable future

The disposal of plastics is a global problem. They are nearly indestructible in natural conditions but are discarded worldwide on a large scale.

The world produces around 359 million metric of plastics each year. Nature cannot address the amount of their disposal at a speed fast enough to prevent harm to living beings. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

There is a consensus that plastics are an unsustainable material. And yes, plastics are certainly an enormous problem, but they don’t necessarily have to be.

-Study shows PET bottles can benefit from clean recyclates

Researchers from the Wageningen Food & Biobased Research in the Netherlands are discovering the effects of rPET on the properties of the bottles and on the quality of the contents of the bottles. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used packaging material for beverage bottles, and these days more and more recycled PET (rPET) is used for the production of PET bottles, in order to make these packages more circular.

But an unanswered question is what the effects of the use of rPET are on the bottle properties and where possible limits lie. And the answer is not unimportant, because it determines the level of rPET that businesses can use in their bottles.

-Asia petrochemical glut bites as SE region in recession, China demand wanes

Petrochemical markets in Asia are grappling with oversupply, with consumption in the southeast region weighed down by recession in most major economies, while the months’ long burst of post-lockdown demand in China is waning.

Downstream plants across the region continue to run at reduced rates due poor demand, with most producers and end-users alike saddled with high inventories.

Fears of another wave of coronavirus infections continue to limit overall economic activity.

Most major countries in southeast Asia posted sharp economic contractions in the second quarter, while the number of infections in countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and India continue to spike. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

-Europe PVC outlook improves on healthier demand as construction recovers

European polyvinyl chloride (PVC) demand has risen in the third quarter on the back of a recovery in downstream sectors, including the key construction industry.

Contract price discussions are underway for August with initial expectations in line with or higher than the cost increase from feedstocks. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

The firmer outlook is tempered by lower activity commercial in southern Europe during the summer lull, although there were indications that August was likely to be a stronger month than normal trends as market players restock following the long period of inactivity in the second quarter.

-Indorama adds US MEG capacity

Indorama Ventures has added 60,000 tonnes/year of US monoethylene glycol (MEG) capacity by debottlenecking, the company said in its Q2 earnings release

The expanded capacity “will be fully realised” from Q4 onward, the company said.

It was not clear whether the added capacity was at the Clear Lake or Port Neches plant, both in Texas. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

The company did not immediately respond to comment.

Indorama completed its acquisition of the Port Neches site from Huntsman in January.

-DSM introduces new glass-filled polypropylene granules

Royal DSM, a global science-based company in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living, has announced a new glass-filled polypropylene (PP) pellet material which has been developed especially for 3D printing, enabling easy and consistent production of structural and demanding applications using fused granulate fabrication technology.

Widely used for its mechanical, thermal and chemical performance, polypropylene (PP) is the second most frequently used polymer worldwide. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

-Saudi Arabia may cut September crude oil prices to Asia

Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia may cut its September official selling price (OSP) for crude sold in Asia, tracking falling Middle East benchmarks and weak refining margins, according to industry sources, said Hydrocarbonprocessing. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

Five sources from Asian refineries on average expect the September OSP for flagship Arab Light crude to fall by 61 cents a barrel, though forecasts range from a cut of USD1 to 20-30 cents, a Reuters survey showed. Slow demand recovery amid the second wave of COVID-19 infections has depressed spot prices for Middle Eastern crude this month, while Asia’s refining margins remained weak, they said.

Although the monthly average of cash Dubai’s premium to swaps dipped by only 6 cents so far this month, DME Oman and cash Dubai this week turned to discounts to swaps for the first time since May, data compiled by Reuters showed.

-IVL recycles its 50-Billionth PET bottle, commits USD1.5-Bn to expand recycling

Indorama Ventures (IVL) has announced it has recently recycled 50-billion polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles since 2011, and has committed up to USD1.5-billion to expand its recycling business with the aim of recycling 50-billion PET bottles a year by 2025, according to Apic-online. Petrochemicals Antibacterial Graphene

IVL recently entered into an agreement with Coca-Cola to form a new joint venture that will build a greenfield integrated recycling plant near Manila in the Philippines.

The facility will be able to process approximately 30,000 t/y of PET bottles and have an output of 16,000 t/y of recycled PET resin.  The plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
