-What’s in a headline? The challenge of reporting on packaging waste
The ways in which the media has covered the plastics debate have sometimes clouded consumer perceptions, to put it mildly. Victoria Hattersley spoke to Libby Peake, head of resource policy at the independent Green Alliance think tank, about its study on the grocery sector’s response to the packaging waste problem, published earlier this year, and the response it has generated. As part of its work for the Circular Economy Task Force, in early January this year the Green Alliance published a report, ‘Plastic promises: what the grocery sector is really doing about packaging’, which suggested that we are seeing a ‘disjointed and potentially counterproductive approach to solving plastic pollution’, with brand owners on the verge of swapping to other materials that may have even more serious environmental consequences – such as higher carbon emissions.

-Significant advantages exist in Reliance-Aramco deal: Report
Its recent capital raising decisions and weak oil prices may be raising doubts among investors on the conclusion of Reliance Industries’ USD 15 billion deal with Saudi Aramco but there still exist significant advantages for the Saudi firm to conclude its investments in the oil-to-chemical business of the Indian giant, an analyst said on Wednesday.
HSBC Global Research in a note said Aramco buying 20 per cent in O2C business of Reliance would allow the Indian firm to build financial muscle as it carves out space for itself in highly competitive omni-channel retail. Petrochemicals Biobased PEF Enzymes
-Asian ethylene prices rise on improved fundamentals
Ethylene prices in northeast Asia have risen by 28pc to $530/t cfr northeast Asia on the back of improved fundamentals.
Spot prices in northeast Asia hit $530/t cfr on 13 May, supported by deals concluded for June-arrival cargoes in a $490-570/t cfr China range.
A deal was likely concluded at $570/t cfr China for a 6,500t June-arrival deep-sea cargo. The buyer is likely a styrene monomer (SM) producer and the seller a regional trader.
This week’s rally reversed most of the losses incurred in April, when prices reached a record low of around $300/t cfr northeast Asia. Spot prices were last above $500/t cfr northeast Asia in late March this year. Petrochemicals Biobased PEF Enzymes
-BMB invests in fourth production unit in Brescia
BMB has added a fourth production unit at its Italian headquarters in Brescia, following an increase in market share.
The company says investment in the new unit, which has taken just over 12 months to complete, is a sign of its commitment to the future growth of the plastics industry.
BMB says the new state-of-the-art smart factory will allow it to operate more efficiently and meet the increasing demand from new and existing customers.
It will also enable its existing range – from 100 tonnes clamp force to 3,500 tonnes clamp force—to be extended to 4,500 tonnes clamp force, two models of which are in the final assembly stages in the new production unit. Petrochemicals Biobased PEF Enzymes
