-Teijin Frontier develops silk-like polyester fabric

Teijin Frontier, Teijin group’s fibres and products converting company, has developed a polyester fabric that looks and feels like fine silk. Teijin Frontier which envisions various applications for its silk-like material such as blouses and outers from thin to medium thicknesses, is targeting annual sales of 150,000 metres by fiscal year ending March 2022.

While high-function materials made with synthetic fibres are recently established as fashion trend in the market, demand also has been growing for natural-texture materials made with natural fibres. Materials in which delicate fibre fluff is expressed, or fibrillated, on the surface of the fabric for smooth textures, similar to silk or cupro, are becoming popular, but these materials have problems with colour fastness in wet condition, yarn strength, colour migration, fading due to fluff release and shape loss by washing.

Offers for August-loading cargoes are expected to emerge later this week.

Regional demand has been sluggish in recent years amid sluggish macroeconomic performance in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Economic weakness has had a direct impact on consumption of finished goods, thereby affecting polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) packaging demand.

-South Korea seeks $350 million trade sanctions against U.S.

South Korea is seeking an annual $350 million in trade sanctions against the United States in an Obama-era dispute over tariffs on steel pipes, it said in a World Trade Organization (WTO) filing published on Tuesday.

South Korea went to the WTO in 2014 to challenge U.S. tariffs levied on oil country tubular goods (OCTG), a type of steel piping used in the energy industry.

Washington said its tariffs aimed to stop South Korea exporting the product at unfairly cheap prices. After South Korea won a partial victory at the WTO, the United States had until July 12 to comply with that ruling. Petrochemicals Biodegradable Biomass

-4 ways your polyester clothes are just like plastic straws

For this week’s discussion, social entrepreneur and sustainability advocate (and my good friend!) Yana Santiago shares a thing or two—four actually—about the plastic we wear but rarely talk about: polyester.  Petrochemicals Biodegradable Biomass

Yana writes:

If you’re the type to check tags and care labels on your favorite wardrobe staples, you would know that most of them are probably made from synthetic fiber or fiber-mixes. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other man-made yarns are now about 60 percent of the material that makes up our clothes.

With fashion companies operating on a relentless drive for innovation, with it comes overconsumption and an unbelievable amount of waste. Here are four ways your polyester clothes are just like plastic straws

-US escalates opposition to EU titanium dioxide, cobalt classifications

New statement to WTO follows concerns raised by Russia and the Philippines

The US has stepped up its objection to an EU proposal to classify titanium dioxide as a category 2 carcinogen, asking the Commission “to take no further action” until it directly addresses WTO members on the matter.

The comments were made in a second US statement to the WTO’s Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade, circulated on 23 July – five days after the EU executive provided assurances in response to initial US concerns expressed in March.
