-Dasani to Sell Water in Cans Starting Next Year

The next bottle of water Coca-Cola sells you might come in a can.

Coke plans to start offering its Dasani water in aluminum cans and bottles next year to make it more environmentally friendly.

The company hopes to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells by 2030.

That’s a pretty lofty goal considering the soft drink giant produced 3.3 million tons of plastic in 2017.

Aluminum is easier to recycle than plastic, so moving customers away from plastic will likely help.

Dasani will still be available in plastic bottles, but they’ll be lighter weight.

-UK startup developing biodegradable microplastics for commercial useBiodegradable microplastics planned to reduce ocean pollution

Microplastics, referring to plastic fragments less than 5mm in diameter, have become commonplace in the world’s oceans and food supply as they pollute water sources and find their indirect way into human and animal bodies.

Widely used in the cosmetics industry as exfoliants in products like scrubs and shampoo, microplastics in the ‘rinse-off’ category were banned in the United Kingdom in 2017, with the European Union proposing to ban 90 per cent of microplastic sources in the coming future.Petrochemicals Biodegradable Bioresin

-Michigan provides $2.8M for recycling projects

A state-of-the-art MRF, a recyclables sorting robot, resumed glass collections – these are a few projects that recently received grants from the state of Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) in late July announced grants to support recycling in the state. The department has a larger pot of cash to work with this year because lawmakers in December passed a bill boosting recycling grant funding from $2 million last year to $15 million this year.

The grants announced in late July total over $2.8 million.

-CSP to supply Ford with composite engine shroud

The SMC dual wall dash shroud, developed for the 2020 Ford Explorer, is said to reduce powertrain noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) compared to metal.

Continental Structural Plastics (CSP; Auburn Hills, Mich., U.S.) has announced that it is supplying Ford Motor Co. (Detroit, Mich., U.S.) with a composite, dual wall dash engine shroud for use in the 2020 Ford Explorer. This sheet molded compound (SMC) advanced composite shroud will reportedly reduce powertrain noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) experienced in the vehicle cabin.Petrochemicals Biodegradable Bioresin

Developed in collaboration with Ford using the tools in Ford’s new NVH lab, the composite engine shroud is said to create an air gap between the engine compartment and the steel front bulkhead by wrapping around the back of the engine and meeting the strut towers on each side of the engine bay.Petrochemicals Biodegradable Bioresin
