-BASF and Toray in Supply Agreement for Production of CFRT Tapes for Automotive & Industrial Applications

Toray Advanced Composites (U.S. office in Morgan Hill, Calif.) and BASF, Florham Park, N.J., signed a manufacturing and supply agreement focused on the production of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRT) tapes for the automotive and industrial markets.

Toray Advanced Composites (U.S. office in Morgan Hill, Calif.) and BASF, Florham Park, N.J., signed a manufacturing and supply agreement focused on the production of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRT) tapes for the automotive and industrial markets. Toray Advanced Composites will produce high quality and affordable CFRT tapes using BASF’s range of Ultramid nylon engineering thermoplastics. -Prices down for key curbside plastics

Plastics Recycling Markets PET and HDPE bales are fetching lower prices than they were a month ago, but PP and high-grade film have shown stability.

The national average price of post-consumer PET beverage bottles and jars has dropped from 15.03 cents per pound this time last month to the current average trading price of 13.91 cents per pound. This time last year, PET was trading at an average of 16.71 cents per pound. Petrochemicals Biodegradable Sustainability 

The price of post-consumer natural high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from curbside collection programs dropped slightly this month. The national average price is now 20.34 cents per pound, compared to 20.47 cents this time last month. One year ago, the national average for this grade was 38.81 cents per pound.

-Bottled water brand mixes RPET and bioplastic

Coca-Cola will use recycled PET and plant-derived plastic in a Dasani water bottle, creating a package known as the “HybridBottle.” The move is one of several recycling-related changes being rolled out.

The beverage giant on Aug. 13 announced the packaging shifts for the Dasani brand, which is among the largest water brands in the U.S.

PlantBottle, which incorporates up to 30% plant-derived PET, has been used in a number of Coca-Cola beverages since its introduction in 2009. The company describes PlantBottle as the “first-ever fully recyclable PET plastic beverage bottle made partially from plants.”    Petroc  hemicals Biodegradable Sustainability

-Sonoco increases recycled plastic usage

A packaging giant has notched upward the amount of RPET it uses in its food containers.

Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco’s plastic packaging incorporated 26% recycled content in 2018 (23% was post-consumer material), according to the latest sustainability report. The year before, its plastic products had 19% post-consumer content.

Last year, Sonoco pledged to boost the post-consumer content in its plastics packaging to 25% by 2025.

Sonoco is an integrated recyclables collector, sorter and manufacturer. The company handles about 2.8 million tons of recyclables per year, using recovered paper in its packaging and industrial products. Petrochemicals Biodegradable Sustainability

-Asahel Benin Sarl to produce sustainable and bio-based plastic films with help from Coperion

The Benin (West Africa)-based blown film manufacturer, Asahel Benin Sarl recently announced that it will produce sustainable, bio-based plastic films in the future. Asahel Benin will achieve this with help from Stuttgart, Germany headquartered Coperion GmbH, which will be delivering a complete compounding system and sharing the corresponding process engineering expertise.

The system includes a ZSK 26 Mc18twin screw extruder, four highly accurate feeders from Coperion K-Tron and a water bath, an air wipe and a strand pelletizer from Coperion Pelletizing Technology.

-Selecta UK and Veolia partner for workplace cup recycling service

Coffee and vending machine supplier Selecta UK has partnered with French transnational waste, water and energy management company Veolia to launch SelectaGreen Cup Recycling Service for the workplace and on-the-go.

SelectaGreen will see millions of cups collected for processing each week. They will be made into high-end fibre goods, such as packaging for perfumes and colognes, shopping bags and luxury notepads.  Petrochemicals Biodegradable Sustainability
