-Where Goes the Textile Waste?

A new sustainability initiative, Accelerating Circularity, announced that it is working with major apparel companies such as Gap Inc., Target Corp. and VF Corp. to chart ways to eliminate textile-industry waste and recycle it into new fibers and materials, according to a Feb. 25 announcement.

Accelerating Circularity’s mission will be to research and identify opportunities in apparel supply chains in order to make them circular, which means taking returned goods and items defined as waste materials and turning them into new textiles, Karla Magruder, the group’s lead, said.

-China’s benzene demand weakens on COVID-19 outbreak

The COVID-19 outbreak has seen petrochemical units across China reduce output due to logistical restrictions.

Refined oil prices dropped sharply on weaker demand. Some refineries cut processing rate or closed processing units due to the epidemic, resulting in less benzene output.

Coal-based benzene output decreased apparently in Feb due to the logistical constraints, with the output loss estimated at about 130-140kt.

By end February, operating rate of benzene units in China was around 74.3%, and of coal-based benzene 48%. The figures had recovered slightly from mid-Feb with the gradual recovery in logistics.

Due to the run rate cuts of benzene downstream units, benzene demand form downstream derivatives was estimated at about 1 million tons, down 300kt from the average level in 2019.

-Recycled PET market to double by 2029

The recycled PET Market is benefiting from the increasing consumption of packaged food products and carbonated and non-carbonated drinks across the world.

This trend is particularly being witnessed more in the developing economies of East Asia and South Asia. Moreover, consistent adoption of an extensive range of recycled PET packaging solutions such as clamshells & containers, bottles & jars, and other solutions in these regions in recent years has been noted. Rapid penetration of food, beverage, and healthcare industries, which show a high preference towards recyclable and sustainable packaging solutions, has led to the remarkable demand for recycled PET packaging solutions in these regions.

-Advertorial: LENZING™ solution from botanic origins

Cellulose has been used in the formation of filter media throughout history. Today’s wood-based Lyocell fibers provide a combination of high technical performance and low environmental impact. LENZING™ Lyocell Shortcut fibers are a sustainable raw material for filter media and specialty papers.

The demand for performance improvement, together with an ever-growing awareness of the environmental impact of product manufacture is driving a re-evaluation of the sources of raw materials, production methods and alternatives to the disposal of materials at the end of their life.

-Positively PET

A new campaign from NAPCOR seeks to differentiate PET from other plastics.

Plastics have been the object of public scorn recently. Take the Planet or Plastic? campaign that National Geographic launched in May 2018. This multiyear effort is designed to raise public awareness about the global plastic trash crisis and encourage reducing the use of single-use plastics.

The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) container industry is responding to this situation with a campaign that seeks to differentiate PET containers from other plastics.

NAPCOR (National Association for PET Container Resources), Charlotte, North Carolina, launched Positively PET, a campaign that has been in the planning stages for approximately a year and a half, earlier this year.

-Is it the end of non-recyclable plastic packaging?

The different types of mono-material high barrier pouches exhibited on the BOBST stand at K 2019

Nothing perhaps defines our consumer-driven society of recent decades better than plastic. Its growth in production since the 1950s – primarily driven by the packaging – has been extraordinary. We now produce a staggering 300 million tons of it each year. But we know that the qualities that make plastic so suited for packaging – its versatility, durability, impermeability – also make it very environmentally unfriendly, non-biodegradable, and challenging to recycle.

Increasingly alarming projections around environmental damage have changed attitudes and focused minds in recent years. Environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic are no longer a nice-to-have aspiration for companies; they are essential. Indeed, the major brands – PepsiCo, Unilever, Nestlé, Mars, Coca Cola Company, to name a few – are challenging their suppliers to achieve the target of 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025.

Is it the end of non-recyclable plastic packaging?
