A new sustainability initiative, Accelerating Circularity, announced that it is working with major apparel companies such as Gap Inc., Target Corp. and VF Corp. to chart ways to eliminate textile-industry waste and recycle it into new fibers and materials, according to a Feb. 25 announcement.
Accelerating Circularity’s mission will be to research and identify opportunities in apparel supply chains in order to make them circular, which means taking returned goods and items defined as waste materials and turning them into new textiles, Karla Magruder, the group’s lead, said.

Effective March 1, 2020, or as existing contract terms allow, the contract and spot prices for the products listed below will decrease as follows:
STYRON™ general purpose polystyrene grades (GPPS) by 65 Euro per metric ton
STYRON™ and STYRON A-Tech™, STYRON C-Tech™ and STYRON X- Tech™ high impact polystyrene grades (HIPS) by 65 Euro per metric ton
The COVID-19 outbreak has seen petrochemical units across China reduce output due to logistical restrictions.
Refined oil prices dropped sharply on weaker demand. Some refineries cut processing rate or closed processing units due to the epidemic, resulting in less benzene output.
Coal-based benzene output decreased apparently in Feb due to the logistical constraints, with the output loss estimated at about 130-140kt.
By end February, operating rate of benzene units in China was around 74.3%, and of coal-based benzene 48%. The figures had recovered slightly from mid-Feb with the gradual recovery in logistics.
Due to the run rate cuts of benzene downstream units, benzene demand form downstream derivatives was estimated at about 1 million tons, down 300kt from the average level in 2019.

Nothing perhaps defines our consumer-driven society of recent decades better than plastic. Its growth in production since the 1950s – primarily driven by the packaging – has been extraordinary. We now produce a staggering 300 million tons of it each year. But we know that the qualities that make plastic so suited for packaging – its versatility, durability, impermeability – also make it very environmentally unfriendly, non-biodegradable, and challenging to recycle.
Increasingly alarming projections around environmental damage have changed attitudes and focused minds in recent years. Environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic are no longer a nice-to-have aspiration for companies; they are essential. Indeed, the major brands – PepsiCo, Unilever, Nestlé, Mars, Coca Cola Company, to name a few – are challenging their suppliers to achieve the target of 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025.
