-Full circle: Q and A to find out more about 100% recyclable polymer

Tom van Aken, CEO of Avantium, spoke to MPN editor Laura Hughes about PEF – a polymer which is 100% plant-based and recyclable.

Please start by telling me about the discovery and development of PEF.

There are two distinct primary problems caused by plastics. One is the growing amounts of single use plastic waste building up in the environment. The other is climate change, which has been driven by two centuries of heavy dependence on fossil fuels and feedstocks.

PEF is able to address both these problems by offering a 100% plant-based and recyclable polymer with a wide range of applications. The production of PEF from plant-based feedstocks utilises a renewable source, and a process with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than fossil-feedstock alternatives.

-US Kronos Q2 income falls on lower sales

US-based pigment producer Kronos Worldwide reported on Wednesday a decline in Q2 net income because of lower sales, said the company.

KRO logged a profit of USD18.6 million or 16 cents per share in second-quarter 2020, down from USD29.5 million or 25 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Earnings, however, beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 4 cents.

The bottom line in the reported quarter was impacted by lower sales volumes, lower average titanium dioxide (TiO2) selling prices, increased raw materials and other production costs. Petrochemicals CrudeOil Textile ACN

Net sales fell 20% year over year to USD386 million, hurt by lower sales volumes and lower average TiO2 selling prices. However, the figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of USD369.9 million.

The price is on a CFR (cost and freight) Asia basis.

As it was written earlier, MEGlobal announced that its Asian Contract Price (ACP) for monoethylene glycol (MEG) will be USD590/MT CFR Asian main ports for arrival August 2020. The August 2020 ACP reflects the short term supply/demand situation in the Asian market.

MEG is mainly used in the production of polyester fibres, resins and films (around 80% of global consumption), followed by use in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin. It is also used as automotive antifreeze.

-Indian DGTR suggests imposition of ADD on PRC PET resin

India’s commerce and industry ministry recently suggested a provisional anti-dumping duty (ADD) of USD15.54- 200.66 per metric tonne (MT) on the import of polyethylene terephthalate (PET resin) from China, said Fibre2fashion.

Reliance Industries and IVL Dhunseri Petrochem Industries Pvt Ltd had filed a complaint claiming injury resulting from the alleged dumping. Petrochemicals CrudeOil Nylon6 ACN.

“Having initiated and conducted the investigation into dumping, injury and causal link in terms of the provisions laid down under the Anti-Dumping Rules, the authority is of the view that imposition of provisional duty is required to offset dumping and injury, pending completion of the investigation,” the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) said in its preliminary findings.Petrochemicals CrudeOil Textile ACN

-Low-cost, durable catalyst for hydrogen production

Researchers from India’s Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences have developed a coordination polymer-based catalyst for hydrogen production that exhibits exceptionally high durability for 70 hours at a high current density of −300 mA/ cm2.

The future of hydrogen as a fuel lies in the design of efficient electrocatalysts for electrochemical splitting of water to produce hydrogen. The commercially used Platinum (Pt)/Carbon (C) catalysts are efficient but expensive and suffer from metal ion leaching or electrocatalyst corrosion when used for long duration.

Researchers from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, have developed a novel palladium-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen production that exhibits high catalytic efficiency with a low overpotential and high durability. We all know the world has a plastic problem – one that’s only been compounded by the pandemic, where fears of germs spreading via reusable items have resulted in more single-use products and packaging. Petrochemicals CrudeOil Textile ACN

And while there has been a huge push towards recycling over the past few decades, the energy intensity and lack of overall effectiveness means plastic recycling has its drawbacks. What would be better is not using it at all.

But one company out of Japan may have a hybrid solution: NEC Corporation recently announced the commercial availability of a bioplastic that mimics plastic’s convenient qualities but breaks down in as little as four years in soil or water.
