Crude Oil Prices Trend

-Asia naphtha prices touch three-month high on crude oil rally

Asia naphtha prices rose to a three-month high, bolstered by strong gains in crude oil futures, with healthy demand and curtailed excess flows from Europe poised to lend market support.

In afternoon Asian trade, open-specification naphtha prices for second-half July delivery averaged at $380.00/tonne CFR (cost and freight) Japan, climbing by $18.50/tonne from the previous session on 5 June. Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

Spot naphtha prices were last seen at such levels on 6 March 2020 at above the $400/tonne CFR Japan mark, ICIS data shows.

ICE Brent August crude oil futures rallied to $42.53/bbl at noon in Asia, after OPEC+ agreed to deepen record output cuts until the end of July.

-Sustainable Green Deal growth only possible with innovative plastics recycling

The recently presented EU Recovery Plan is a necessary means to helping waste management companies achieve a circular economy across Europe.

‘The circular economy must be a guiding principle for EU recovery and future growth plans – especially when it comes to the plastics sector’, says Klaus Wohnig, CEO, APK AG. Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

‘The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted recyclers’ supply chains and, aggravated by the low price of virgin materials on top of low oil prices, demand for plastic recyclates has decreased dramatically’. This development is diametrically opposed to the ambitious Green Deal plans of the EU Commission with regard to boosting the quality of plastics recycling, increasing resource efficiency and decreasing emissions.

-Indorama buys PET recycling facility in Brazil

PET giant continues to invest in recycling

Thailand-headquartered Indorama Ventures (IVL) has announced that it has completed its acquisition of a 100% equity stake in AG Resinas Ltda.

IVL closed the deal 8 June. This acquisition is strategically in-line with the IVL’s long-term sustainability objectives and will complement IVL’s PET business in Brazil. The company said it would ‘provide a unique opportunity to create an immediate recycling presence with further expansion opportunity’. Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

AG Resinas, a PET recycling facility in Juiz de Fora, Brazil with a capacity of some 9,000 tonnes/annum, processes post-consumer PET into recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) flakes and pellets. In terms of logistics, the facility has the advantage of being located in close proximity to a large supply of recovered PET bottles.

-Ocean plastics: we need prevention more than a cure

‘Once in the oceans, it’s almost impossible to clean up’ says Tomra’s Kristine Berg

When circular economy advisor Kristine Berg sailed with eXXpedition on a voyage across the North Pacific, she saw first-hand what the Great Pacific Garbage Patch looked like.

“Washing baskets, toilet seats, lawn chairs and much more,” she said. “It’s out there for decades, so it’s breaking down and becoming more like a plastic soup than the island of plastic that many people imagine. How in the world do you clean that up in any kind of efficient way? In time or money?”  Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

The experience was an amazing one, said Kristine, who works at Tomra, the Norwegian company specialised in recycling and sensor-based sorting systems, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the ocean.  “When we sailed across the North Pacific the closest people to us were the International Space Station…so it’s like going to the moon in many ways as well,” she said.

-Global 2020 economic output to plunge if second coronavirus outbreak hits – OECD

Global economic output will fall 7.6% in 2020 with soaring unemployment if a second coronavirus outbreak takes hold by the end of the year, the OECD said on Wednesday.

If a new wave of infections is avoided, economic activity is expected to drop 6%, the organisation said in its latest Economic Outlook. Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

“If a second outbreak occurs triggering a return to lockdowns, world economic output is forecast to plummet 7.6% this year, before climbing back 2.8% in 2021. At its peak, unemployment in the OECD economies would be more than double the rate prior to the outbreaks, with little recovery in jobs next year.

-LCA proves PS is ‘made for the circular economy’

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for recycled polystyrene are half that of its fossil-based counterpart, reports Ineos Styrolution in the first results of a lifecycle assessment (LCA) for depolymerised styrene according to the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. Petrochemicals Enzymes Automotive CPL

Two independent research projects have demonstrated a consistent picture for the carbon footprint of recycled polystyrene, claims the company.

The first, a laboratory scale project, shows GHG savings of 37 per cent when making styrene from post-consumer polystyrene waste, compared with fossil-based styrene. A further reduction is said to be possible by adapting the energy mix.

-Arvind launches revolutionary anti-viral fabrics10

India’s leading textile-to-retail conglomerate Arvind Limited today announced launch of anti-viral textile technology for the first time in India under its brand ‘Intellifabrix’. Arvind has partnered with Swiss textile innovation leader HeiQ Materials AG and Taiwanese specialty chemical major Jintex Corp to introduce the revolutionary anti-virus technology.

Research shows that viruses and bacteria, can remain active on textile surfaces for up to two days. Garments treated with HeiQ Viroblock actively inhibit viruses and kill them upon contact, helping to minimise the potential for re-transmission of pathogens through clothing, an Arvind press release said.
