-Thoughts about the Concept of Circular Economy

Starting Position without Circular Economy

ACThe economy is defined as a social domain that emphasizes the practices, discourses, and material expressions associated with the production, use, and management of resources”

In the traditional economy, “house” has a private sense, a space closed by walls, and taken away from the community. In this model, the economy and the environment are in a linear relationship tending towards infinity: the economy produces and the environment collects waste and garbage, like a box.

It soon became clear that this box is not infinite and that the economy and the environment are not in a linear relationship, but in a circular relationship because the economy is a piece of a larger system. This system is a closed system and the economy must take into account and respect intrinsic limits.

-Park2Nature has high aroma, oxygen & moisture barriers

The compostable packaging alternative in Asia

After its introduction in the early 20th century, plastic revolutionized the modern packaging world due to its unique benefits as a material.

With a relatively low cost, simple manufacturing process, and a long list of potential applications, plastics transformed the way the world thought about packaging.

However, plastic packaging is fundamentally evolving to adapt to changing social attitudes concerning the environment despite the material’s versatility and ability to be repurposed for a variety of uses.  Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

Located in Germany, AMP specializes in producing and selling thermoplastic powders with “plug & play” processability and part performance for selective laser sintering (SLS) and powder bed fusion (PBF) processes. Through this partnership, both parties are jointly developing new powder products for industrial additive manufacturing from PBT resin that has been specially optimized based on MCC’s chemical expertise. A beta version of Rolaserit PBY01 powder will be soon unveiled in Europe for client evaluation.

-Packaging Europe: susceptible, but not immune, to coronavirus disruptions

The packaging sector in Europe has overall low exposure to the coronavirus

pandemic, but some companies are more vulnerable than others. Some non-paper packaging manufacturers have or are encountering production and logistical disruptions linked to the pandemic. Although this will continue to be a risk, we do not expect it to be material. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

-Worley awarded renewable chemicals and plastics FEED contract

Worley has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) to develop Avantium’s flagship plant that will support the transition to a bio-based economy for plastics. The plant will produce 100% plant-based FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) – a key building block for many chemicals and plastics.  Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

Avantium has announced that its subsidiary, Avantium Renewable Polymers, will locate their new plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The facility will use a novel technology that converts plant sugars into a wide range of sustainable chemicals and plastics, such as the next-generation plastic material PEF (polyethylene furanoate).

PEF is a novel, fully recyclable, bio-based polymer with improved barrier performance and thermal properties. It has the potential to make a significant impact on the packaging, textiles, and film industries.

Avantium Renewable Polymers has completed lab research to demonstrate its new YXY® plant-to-plastics technology in a pilot plant. Worley is carrying out the FEED for the new plant that will make FDCA and PEF commercially available. They also completed the concept development phase in March and concluded that Avantium is ready to progress to commercial scale.

-Turkey boosts recycling capacity, saves 93,000 tons of plastic in 4 months

In the first four months of 2020, 93,000 tons of plastic packaging waste was collected and recycled, Turkey’s Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning announced Wednesday.  Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

This amount represents TL 100 million ($14.6 million) saved by the country in its bid to reduce pollution and boost recycling efforts. About 45,000 tons of this waste include plastic bags and packaging for drinks, cosmetics and hygiene products.

The latest figures show the country’s plastic packaging waste recycling capacity reached about 600,000 tons from 100,000 tons in the last decade.

-Defining plastics in packaging

A guide to polymer terminology in the packaging industry

From bio-based and plant-based to biodegradable and compostable, there are many classifications ascribed to plastics in the packaging industry. These numerous classifications are used often, but many consumers — and, indeed, many packaging companies — do not completely understand what each phrase means. Here, Dr Ashlee Jahnke, director of research at natural polycarbonate research company Teysha Technologies, explains the classifications and sustainability of plastics in packaging.

Although much of the world has switched on to the plastics problem in recent years and conversations have started at all levels, from consumers to policymakers, many terms in this conversation still spark confusion. Labels such as ‘bio-based’ and ‘biodegradable’ seem relatively easy to understand, but these terms are deceptively vague and loosely-defined. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

-Invista starts construction on $1bn adiponitrile plant in China

Invista Nylon Chemicals (China) has started construction on its RMB7bn ($1bn) adiponitrile (ADN) plant at Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP).

The company held a groundbreaking ceremony in Shanghai to officially mark the start of construction on the 400,000-tonne-per-year plant.

In February last year, Invista signed a memorandum of cooperation with SCIP to build the ADN plant.Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

-Clariant announces breakthrough in PP catalyst technology that boosts output – execs

Clariant said it has made a breakthrough in polypropylene (PP) catalyst technology with a phthalate-free catalyst that can also provide superior properties and improve plant output, executives said on Tuesday.

“Results met and exceeded expectations with superior impact resistance and stiffness,” said Marvin Estenfelder, head of R&D for Clariant Catalysts, at a virtual media roundtable event. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

“Somewhat of a surprise is that we found plant productivity also significantly improved with over $8m/year in additional production benefit. An initial focus on safety and health turned into a new business opportunity,” he added.

-Asia ethylene rally may peak as downstream margins hit

The rally in Asia-Pacific ethylene prices may lose steam in the third quarter because of weakening downstream margins and a rise in long-haul import volumes.

Spot prices have risen to $830-850/t cfr northeast Asia, up by another $30-60/t from the end of last week to the highest since 4 February this year. The rally has now been sustained for an eighth consecutive week, with prices more than doubling from levels in the $300s/t cfr northeast Asia on 21 April.

But the gains now appearing to be nearing an end, as downstream margins begin to be squeezed.Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil Fabric

“There is not much room to rise as only fringe downstream sectors can now afford ethylene at this level,” said a key regional trader.
