-Camvac: “COVID-19 hasn’t locked down our expansion plans”

Across the packaging industry, there have been mixed messages on the effects of COVID-19 on businesses. Plenty of companies haven’t needed to furlough staff, and many have in fact seen spikes in production. In this article, Greg Kingham, CEO of Camvac, explains the impact of COVID on his company’s plans for the future.

Camvac is a UK-based, leading global supplier of metallised films, clear barrier films, and laminates for a wide range of food packaging, liquid packaging, medical applications, and insulation products. Before the start of the lockdown period in the UK, we had a successful Packaging Innovations exhibition, launching our new home compostable metallised acetate film, Cambrite Camvert.

-Lack of tourism shifts PET, rPET landscape in Europe

ICIS study says bottle collection and recycling volumes will suffer in tourist-dependent regions of Europe.

The near total collapse of the tourism, lodging and air travel sectors in Europe in 2020 resulting from COVID-19 and subsequent measures has changed how polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic is consumed and recycled, according to a new analysis.

The eight-page analysis by Susan Mair, a petrochemical analyst with London-based Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS), says in part that “countries which usually attract substantial foreign tourism and will not in 2020 include, predictably, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Croatia and Malta. Demand for PET resin in these countries is expected to decline versus 2019.” Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil PBT

In contrast, says Mair, “Countries that can expect to see some sizeable demand return as holidays are taken in the home country as opposed to outside their borders include the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Denmark.”

-Europe PE market skips pre-buying for July despite crude oil surge

There have been no signs of prebyuing for July polyethylene (PE) in spite of the surge in crude oil prices which can reasonably be expected to have an impact on the upcoming ethylene monomer contract.

Brent crude was trading above $42/bbl early on Friday.

At times, PE pricing discussions for June have been tetchy, although not all of them have ben concluded because the practice of retroactive settlements is still rife at many large accounts. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil PBT

In April and May, buyers were able to enjoy lower prices as the monthly upstream ethylene contract fell by a record amount. Only a portion of this was passed on to buyers, many of whom were struggling to cope with a surge in packaging demand as consumers panic bought goods in the early days of the pandemic.

-Guide to “Recycling” Options for Fund Managers

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis is presenting fund managers with numerous challenges. One key challenge is to make sure that their portfolio companies have sufficient capital available to weather this particular storm. But how can fund managers ensure the liquidity required by their funds and portfolio companies is available?

Proskauer’s leading Private Investment Funds team examines the ‘recycling’ options available in the market and outlines the main considerations fund managers should keep in mind when considering liquidity options. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil PBT

-Which Is Better for the Environment — Biodegradable or Recyclable Plastic?

Biodegradable plastics aren’t really good for the environment because to biodegrade they have to be left out in the open. Recycling, on the other hand, helps capture the value of certain polymers — primarily PET and HDPE, some PS and PP — but the costs of collection, sorting, and transportation involved with mechanical recycling continue to raise challenges. Two new studies from IDTechEx seek to clarify these issues.

“New, biodegradable plastics and better recycling strategies are two promising approaches to help the world cut down on plastics waste,” said IDTechEx. Both techniques are discussed in two reports: “Bioplastics 2020-2025” and “Green Technology and Polymer Recycling: Market Analysis 2020-2030.”

-Ruby Mills Ltd develops H+ Technology™ fabrics

Ruby Mills Ltd has developed H+ Technology™ fabrics that have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal capabilities that last for multiple washes. H+ Technology’s™ anti microbial and anti viral efficacy has been tested and the findings indicate that the viruses and microbes don’t survive on surface of the treated fabric.

At the very core of this proven technology is the active ingredient that kills over 99 per cent of the H1N1 Influenza virus (the family of novel Corona Virus) and provides lasting protection for multiple washes, thus ensuring effective protection and containment of the spread. H+ Technology™ scores over other technologies in two critical ways:

1) Most other technologies compromise on the fabric’s hand-feel. This makes the fabric unfit for daily use. Being experts in Fabric finishing, the Company has put in significant work on creating a process that maintains the hand-feel, breathability and finish of the fabric.

-Europe PET buyers relying on domestic supply but local PX, PTA offtake struggling as pandemic effects linger

European buyers are relying heavily on domestic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) output as producers have regained market share from importers, yet upstream paraxylene (PX) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) offtake is struggling.

“There are more and more PTA imports. I  hear there is not much spot PX demand on the market, so demand is not really there and prices are not there either,” a PX source said. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil PBT

Recent historic price lows along the chain encouraged PET pre-buys and fixed price deals for deliveries in the second half of 2020 and beyond.

-Meat producer becomes UK’s first to use certified compostable packaging

West Country sausage-maker, Wetways, has Westaways has achieved a major milestone in the ongoing war against plastic-use by becoming the first meat producer to use packaging that is so eco-friendly.

Devon-sausage maker, Charles Baughn, says the process has taken a lot of patience and investment, but as a company that cares about the environment it was a necessary task. Petrochemicals Enzymes CrudeOil PBT

Mr Baughn said: “Products like sausages do not have to be entombed in plastic – there are alternatives and from now on our range will be sold in eco-friendly cartons and wrappings that will disintegrate naturally in a compost heap.”
