-Fishing for ghost nets

Many people visualize marine litter as unsightly plastic debris in the form of bottles, caps, plastic bags and other waste drifting in huge gyres in the oceans.

Just as dangerous and far less visible is what’s known as ‘ghost gear’: discarded, lost or abandoned nets that form floating death traps, says the Environmental Justice Foundation. The foundation runs the Net Free Seas project and is funded by the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund.

The problem is a global one and the damage that ghost nets inflict every year is vast, as these nets continue to catch and kill marine wildlife, said EJF’s executive director Steve Trent.

-Vinyl Sustainability Council claims 550,000 tons recycled annually

Industry group says vinyl sector is becoming more familiar with recycling procedures.

The Washington-based Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC) says some 1.1 billion pounds (550,000 tons) of the polymer material is diverted from landfills annually in the United States and Canada. The council did not provide a diversion percentage figure attached to the 550,000-ton volume figure.  Petrochemicals Enzymes Graphene Chemicals

“Post-consumer recycling contributes roughly 15 percent, and this number has grown 40 percent since 2014,” says the council.

-Home textiles made from bulky polyester filament yarn

Home textiles directly influence the feel-good factor of our personal surroundings.

Being pleasant to the touch, soft and extremely aesthetic, highly-bulky up-holstery fabrics for furniture, decorative fabrics and wall textiles, drapes and pleated curtains and even carpets can support and express our lifestyles and personalities.

High-quality tex-tiles for our beds, bathrooms and tables are frequently matter-of-fact for many of us.

And high-end yarns are also used in the automobile industry – for seat upholstery, interior cladding and floor covering in cars. Petrochemicals Enzymes Graphene Chemicals

Often, they have to withstand heavy demands.

For this reason, the yarn quality of the high-titer yarns must be correspondingly high.

-KRICT team develops improved graphene production method

A state-run research body in South Korea opened the way for the mass-production of high-quality industrial graphene in powder form without treating graphite with a strong acid. Petrochemicals Enzymes Graphene Chemicals

A domestic company will seek commercial production within this year.

The Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) said its research team has developed an electrochemical stripping process that can send electricity to graphite electrodes to peel graphene into very thin layers.

The peeled graphene is extracted in powder form through a filter.

The process can reportedly produce 60 grams of high-quality graphene per hour.

-Lifestyle introduces formula to enhance plastic pack biodegradability

Yorkshire-based packaging experts Lifestyle Packaging has introduced BioPAC to the UK market, described as a ground-breaking formula that will degrade plastic packaging in 10 years.

That’s 100-200 times faster than the natural lifespan of plastic.

The unique plastic additive is added into the base polymer – such as PP, PE, PS, PET, and other major resin types – and enhances its biodegradability without the need for UV or high temperatures. Petrochemicals Enzymes Graphene Chemicals

Instead, the formula allows acids, secreted naturally by over 600 microbes, to soften the macromolecules within the plastic, resulting in much faster biodegradation.

-Belite Ceramics, SACMI completes the first 4.0 ‘virtual start-up’

Working alongside the customer, Sacmi has successfully dealt with an unprecedented challenge: the remote start-up of a complete, automated line. Now, thanks to this new SACMI plant, Belite can think big and produce innovative top-of-the-range products

At the end of 2019 Chinese firm Belite already had all the machines on site, ready to be installed and started up by SACMI technicians.

Then came the health emergency, quarantining the entire country and preventing the Italian teams from getting there. Hence the challenge of performing a fully remote installation and start-up of an entire plant, one of China’s most advanced in terms of automation, technology and digitization. Today came the announcement that the first white body wall tiles – products of outstanding added value – and glazed porcelain tiles have started coming off the new up-and-running production lines. SACMI, after standing shoulder to shoulder with customers all over the world ever since the earliest stages of the health emergency, has now proven it’s ready for the post-COVID phase, when virtual assistance will be an increasingly essential element during the design, start-up and after-sale phases.

Procter & Gamble (P&G; Cincinnati, Ohio) has granted Cargill, Inc. (Minneapolis, Minn.) an exclusive license that allows Cargill to further develop and commercialize a technology developed by P&G that converts lactic acid into bio-based acrylic acid, so that it can ultimately be incorporated in a range of applications from superabsorbent polymers in absorbent hygiene products to thickeners in household paints and beyond. The use of bio-based acrylic acid is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to greener products for years to come – something that is important to a range of stakeholders, including consumers and business leaders.

P&G scientists were recently announced as winners of the American Chemical Society (ACS) 2020 Award for Affordable Green Chemistry for this groundbreaking proprietary technology. While the conversion technology is considered a breakthrough, it will take several more years of development before impacting consumer products in the marketplace.
