PolyOne today launched ColorMatrix™ AAzure™ Acetaldehyde Control Additive, a process aid for PET and recycled PET (rPET) preforms with added acetaldehyde (AA) control capabilities. It is a patented liquid formulation that can reduce AA by up to 80 percent in the preform, helping to counter off-taste in bottled contents.

The increased use of rPET in PET bottles can lead to increased AA levels, but can also compromise bottle mechanical strength and create blowouts, both of which reduce productivity and increase scrap rates.

This technology helps to overcome these issues so that higher levels of rPET can be used, and it can be combined with recycle-friendly toners to offset the yellowing common with increased rPET content. One final benefit is a reduction in the energy required to heat preforms, which fosters roughly 25 percent lower carbon emissions.

Agilyx Corp. (Tigard, Ore.) announced an exclusive collaboration with TechnipFMC to jointly develop a process to purify Agilyx Styrene Oil to high-purity styrene. This collaboration has been the result of over a year of evaluation, and their desire to expand their energy transition and circular economy offerings. -OXO Biodegradable Vs Compostable Plastics

Let’s look at the similarities and differences between OXO biodegradable (Oxo-bio) and compostable plastics.

The purpose of this article is not to say which technology works better, but to understand both technologies better by comparing them. Compostable plastic is a big family so I may reduce the scope to PLA and PBAT when needed.


OXO-bio plastics and compostable plastics such as PLA and PBAT can be used for similar applications such as bags, packaging and mulch films.

Carbon origin

Most compostable plastics are biobased (PLA, PHA, PBS, PBAF). However, some are fossil-based such as PBAT and PCL.  OXO-bio plastics are usually fossil-based but the masterbatch can be mixed with bio-based polymers such as Bio-PE for instance.


OXO-bio is not a plastic resin on itself. It’s a catalyst to reduce the molecular weight of ordinary PE and PP to make them biodegradable.Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Biobased

Compostable plastics are plastics (resins) on their own and it’s possible to blend (mix) them with other compostable plastics (resins). PBAT and PLA can be blended together, and both can be blended with starch for instance.

-Demand for resins in Brazil up 3% on year in Q1 2020 – Braskem

Demand for resins in Brazil in the first quarter of 2020 increased 3% year on year to 1.40 million mt and 7% quarter on quarter, reported S&P Global with reference to Brazilian petrochemical producer Braskem’s statement earlier this month.

Braskem said its crackers operated at a capacity utilization rate of 81%, up 3 percentage points quarter on quarter. Compared with Q1 2019, capacity utilization increased by 3 percentage points, Braskem said June 3.

The company’s resin (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and PVC) sales in the Brazilian market totaled 882,000 mt, up 0.5% year on year and similar quarter on quarter.Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Biobased

“Market share has been stable or very similar to the past quarters,” Chief Financial Officer Pedro van Langendonck Teixeira de Freitas said June 3. “Braskem sells at an import parity in Brazil, which is part of our strategy. We adjust the prices to accommodate or to reflect prices with international prices and exchange rate,” Freitas said.

-Assets of closed Canadian film recycler acquired

A packaging producer purchased the assets of film recycling company Enviroplast and will use the equipment to supply itself with recycled pellets.

Montreal-based TC Transcontinental on June 16 announced its acquisition of the assets of Enviroplast, a reclaimer with facilities in Quebec and Ontario. The company processed post-industrial and post-consumer LDPE at its two Canadian facilities.

TC Transcontinental produces flexible plastic packaging, and the company framed its recent purchase as a way for the company to incorporate recycled plastic into its packaging products. In a release, the company said the acquisition is “part of our goal to vertically integrate the recycling of plastics in our packaging production chain” throughout North America and Latin America. -Invista Victoria ADN retrofit on target for early 2021 startup

Invista says the USD250 million retrofit of its Victoria, Texas, adiponitrile (ADN) unit remains on schedule, with completion slated for early 2021, said Chemweek.

“We anticipate all pre-turnaround construction will be completed later this year, and the final tie-ins are to be installed during a regularly scheduled maintenance outage in early 2021 with additional ADN coming online at that time,” says a statement from the company. The retrofit, announced in 2017, will allow the Victoria facility to employ a new Invista process that provides higher ADN product yields while lowering energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and capital intensity than the current process. First scaled up at Invista’s Orange, Texas, facility, the technology has also been deployed at the Chalampe, France, site of Butachimie, Invista’s joint venture with BASF, and it will be implemented in Invista’s new 400,000 metric tons/year ADN project in Shanghai, China, which broke ground earlier this month.

ADN, a key feedstock for nylon-6,6, has been tight in recent years. Three producers—Invista, Ascend, and Asahi Kasei—control the technology used to produce it at commercial scale.

Asia’s petrochemical trade mostly slowed down ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday in China on 25-27 June, with sentiment in key feedstock markets also weighed by the recent decline in crude oil prices.
