-PET Resin Demand Slackens Because of COVID-19

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most commonly used plastic to package bottled water, soft drinks, and on-the-go food products, and demand for those products tends to follow a cyclical, fairly predictable pattern.

For example, as temperatures begin to rise and the European summer holiday season begins, the demand for PET resin increases, writes Susan Mair, Petrochemical Analyst at Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS), in a recent article.

Bottled water and soft drink sales rise as warmer weather moves across the continent, she notes, and travelers typically eschew tap water when they are abroad, causing sales of bottled water to soar in holiday destinations.

None of that is likely to happen this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent shelter-in-place and lockdown measures.

-Waste plastic bottles recycled into quality consumer products

Recycled transparent plastic bottles have been reborn as various high-quality products, such as clothing, bags and cosmetic bottles, under the government’s new waste recycling policy, the Ministry of Environment said Tuesday.

Under the recycling policy that went into effect in February this year, discarded transparent plastic bottles have been separately collected from apartment and public garbage dumps in Seoul, Busan and Jeju Province to be recycled into high-quality consumer products through collaboration with local companies, the ministry said.

Previously, waste plastic bottles used in South Korea to produce clothes and other products were all imported from abroad. Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

Only 10 percent of old plastic bottles collected locally were recycled into high-quality consumer products.

-New degradable compound for injection moulding

A new, home-compostable bioplastic has been developed that can be used in injection moulding applications.

The new M·VERA GP1012 has been specially designed for this processing technique. It consists primarily of renewable resources and is certified as OK biodegradable SOIL and OK compost HOME by TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium for wall thicknesses up to 1 mm. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring high stiffness (tensile modulus 2,000 MPa) and can therefore be used for a wide range of household articles, toys, packaging, coffee capsules, etc. Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

“This compound consists of almost 100% high-quality, renewable raw materials and is excellently suited for the production of rigid objects,” says Ulf Malcharczik, Business Development Manager at Bio-Fed. According to the compounder, a food safety approval has also been granted.

-Europe plastics polymers 2020 output severely impacted by pandemic

Production of polymers used for plastics packaging are to be severely impacted in 2020 across Europe on the back of the coronavirus pandemic-induced lockdowns, according to forecasts by ICIS.Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

Output of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), widely used in the construction industry, is expected to fall by more than 500,000 tonnes this year compared to 2019.

Polycarbonates (PC) output is expected to post a decrease of more than 15% year on year; PC is mainly used for electronic applications.

FALLS ACROSS THE BOARD

“The fall in demand for PVC has varied by country within Europe. Germany and a number of central European countries saw a fall of demand of around 40% at the worst point in April whereas Italy, France and the UK saw larger drops in the region of 60–70%,” said Robert Searle, ICIS Petrochemicals Analyst.

-Chemical Recycling Europe says its processes will close loops

Association says chemical recycling can “upcycle” plastics beyond those used most commonly in packaging applications.Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

Brussels-based association Chemical Recycling Europe says processes used by its members are distinct from energy recovery, and instead should be viewed as “upcycling” and as keeping polymers in a closed loop.

The association issued the statements in response to Priority 9 in a list that was recently developed by “various European Union non-governmental organizations and associations.” Chemical Recycling Europe says it largely supports the list of 10 priorities, but contends the chemical recycling methods of its members should be more clearly identified for their ability “to close the material loop by converting plastic [scrap] currently not recycled into high-quality products.”

-Europe R-PET clouded by poor demand, high stocks and low virgin PET prices

Players in the recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) are being very cautious in their views for July as many focus on the immediate issues of weak demand, high stock levels and low virgin PET prices. Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

June prices for both colourless (C) and mixed coloured (MC) post-consumer bottles (PCB) and flakes dropped on the back of weak demand largely caused by substitution back to very low priced virgin PET, as well as an overall lack of demand for R-PET in the European market.

Of the sources that were willing to comment, the sentiment appears to be remaining bearish, with several continuing to see only downward pressure on prices, as was the case in June.

“July is a mixed picture,” a flake seller said.

“[There is] still pressure on prices so [we] expect further decrease but don’t know how much.”

-Asia’s petrochemical demand recovery in limbo amid easing of restrictions

Asia’s petrochemical demand recovery is likely to be in limbo despite countries easing restrictions on their lockdowns, amid a resurgence of the coronavirus in Beijing.

New cases in Beijing and a global record single-day increase of nearly 190,000 coronavirus cases on Sunday signaled a world economy sullen with gloomy data.

The Asian benzene market continue to face elevated inventories in China and with deep-sea lots set to continue arriving in China and Taiwan, supply is expected to remain ample in the region. Petrochemicals Enzymes Recycling Cars

Some sellers concede that it has become difficult to move benzene cargoes in recent weeks, with many buyers not in a hurry to purchase.
