In the bio-based plastics space, polylactic acid (PLA) has proven to be one of the most promising polymers because of its versatile applications ranging from disposable cutlery and degradable sutures to rigid packaging and extrusion coatings. Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT), with help from Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF, has developed a strategy to chemically recycle post-consumer PLA waste into a lactate ester (ethyl lactate) with commercial applications in chemical synthesis, magnetic tape coatings, plastic, and more, primarily in the food industry.
PLA is a bio-based alternative to fossil-fuel-based plastics, but its production is very raw material and energy intensive, according to Fraunhofer ICT: It takes 2.39 kg of corn cobs, 50 kg of water and 54 Ml fossil energy to produce one kilogram of PLA.

Switzerland-based SANITIZED TecCenter has had its in-house microbiology lab certified by the International Antimicrobial Council Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
SANITIZED, the specialist for antimicrobial material protection and hygiene function in textiles and polymers, had its in-house microbiology laboratory in the SANITIZED TecCenter certified by IAC, the International Antimicrobial Council.
To ensure responsible use of biocides and international comparability, test methods and test results for antimicrobial treated products must be transparent, useful and comparable. This is precisely why SANITIZED used this non-profit, US-based institute to increase safety for antimicrobial-treated products and for consumers.
Textile and polymer product manufacturers value the assistance that the in-house SANITIZED TecCenter provides them with developing and optimising their products. It supervises technical application aspects, and conducts microbiological tests and analytics – all from a single source.
The increasing awareness of hand hygiene, which has gained a key role in the fight against Covid-19, has determined a significant growth in demand for hand sanitisers. To get an idea of how this market has recently grown and is expected to grow, it is enough to consider the figures provided by Grand View Research. In 2019, the global hand sanitiser market size value was $2.7bn. In 2020, it is expected to reach $3.3bn and to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 22.6% from 2020 to 2027.
The most common packaging material for hand sanitisers and personal hygiene detergents is PET, a material that has several advantages. First of all, it is characterised by an unrivalled strength-to-weight ratio, which leads to benefits for transportation. Moreover, PET containers do not break or shatter. This has advantages in terms of safety, especially compared to glass. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
Reports on gross domestic product and jobless rate add to pressure on the government.
The U.K. economy will take longer to recover from the coronavirus than expected, it emerged Tuesday as two official reports painted a bleak picture of the country’s finances. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
The economy grew less than analysts expected in May, up 1.8 percent from April, according to the Office for National Statistics. That leaves the country’s output 24.5 percent lower than at the start of February.
The UK’s GDP fell by 19.1% in March-May as the country’s partial lockdown brought most economic sectors to a standstill, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday.
The chemicals sector’s output rose in March, then fell in April though to a lesser extent than other manufacturing sectors, and rose again in May (see bottom interactive graph). Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
Despite a recovery in May in chemicals-intensive sectors like construction and manufacturing, as workers started returning to work after some lockdown measures were lifted, most of the UK economy was still “in the doldrums” during that month, the ONS said.
Economic output rose by 1.8% in May, but that was not enough to offset falls of 6.9% in March and 20.4% in April.
Germany’s chemical industry association VCI (Frankfurt) says that innovation rather than product bans should be the focus of the new EU chemicals strategy, which the European Commission intends to present in the fall, said Chemweek.
VCI’s announcement relates to a European Parliament vote, due to take place, on a list of demands from its environment committee on the new chemicals strategy, which was announced as part of the EU Green Deal. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
According to VCI, the committee is calling for major changes to chemicals legislation including the removal of quantitative thresholds, many additional tests of chemicals and animal testing, and blanket bans on use without prior risk assessment.
“The chemical-pharmaceutical industry supports a chemical strategy that promotes innovations to implement the EU’s climate goals, the circular economy, and digitalization. This requires a stable legal framework,” says Gerd Romanowski, managing director/science, technology, and environment at VCI.
BEWiSynbra Group, a leading producer of expandable polystyrene (EPS) in Europe, announces that it has entered into an agreement to acquire certain assets deriving from the Danish recycling company EPS Recycle, and thereby establish the recycling company BEWiSynbra Circular Denmark A/S, said the company.
“I am very pleased that we have established BEWiSynbra Circular Denmark A/S, confirming our commitment to lead the EPS industry’s change towards a circular economy. This acquisition fits very well with our strategic priorities,” says Jonas Siljeskar, CEO of BEWiSynbra Group. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
BEWiSynbra has launched an ambitious target of recycling 60,000 tonnes of EPS annually. Since the launch of BEWiSynbra Circular in October 2018, the group has acquired three recycling companies, established a recycling company in Portugal and introduced several recycling initiatives. With the acquisition of assets deriving from EPS Recycle, BEWiSynbra will expand and strengthen its activities for collection and recycling of EPS in Denmark. The operations will be run as BEWiSynbra Circular Denmark A/S and headed by Karl Erik Olesen, who is also the Managing Director at BEWiSynbra Denmark A/S.
OPEC expects demand for its crude oil to rebound sharply next year, surpassing levels seen before the coronavirus crisis, as rival producers struggle to revive output.
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries forecasts the need for its crude will surge by 25% in 2021 to average 29.8 million barrels a day, higher than the level required in 2019, according to a monthly report.
While the increase is partly driven by a recovery in global oil demand as economic growth resumes, an even bigger factor is the misfortune of OPEC’s competitors. After slumping 7.4% this year, the U.S. will see only limited production growth in 2021, the report showed. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
-Radilon® Mixloy, a new range of PA blends
Innovative solutions for automotive, consumer goods and E&E
To maximize polymer performance in final products by mixing polymers with different properties was the goal of RadiciGroup High Performance Polymers. The result is its new specialty range of products with the brand name Radilon® Mixloy. The matrix material for these new innovative products is polyamide, the flagship product of RadiciGroup, the only industrial group in Europe today capable of controlling its entire production process, from polymer chemicals to engineering polymers, including end-of-life recycling. Totally vertically integrated production allows the Group to realize customer-tailored formulations and develop innovative projects.
Specifically, Radilon® Mixloy products are made by blending polymers readily available on the market today through a compatibilization technology developed by the Group, which makes naturally immiscible raw materials miscible.
“At the moment, development is focused on certain types of alloys,” pointed out Nicolangelo Peduto, Research and Development manager of RadiciGroup High Performance Polymers, “but, in the future, we plan to add other products, with the goal of achieving properties that are simply not attainable with individual polymers. One of our objectives is to be able to meet the demand coming from market niches. Furthermore, thanks to our upstream vertically integrated polyamide production, we have at our disposal a number of different types of polymers that give us design freedom in formulating the new Radilon® Mixloys.”
