-Fraunhofer ICT Introduces Upcycling of Post-Consumer PLA Waste

In the bio-based plastics space, polylactic acid (PLA) has proven to be one of the most promising polymers because of its versatile applications ranging from disposable cutlery and degradable sutures to rigid packaging and extrusion coatings. Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT), with help from Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF, has developed a strategy to chemically recycle post-consumer PLA waste into a lactate ester (ethyl lactate) with commercial applications in chemical synthesis, magnetic tape coatings, plastic, and more, primarily in the food industry.

PLA is a bio-based alternative to fossil-fuel-based plastics, but its production is very raw material and energy intensive, according to Fraunhofer ICT: It takes 2.39 kg of corn cobs, 50 kg of water and 54 Ml fossil energy to produce one kilogram of PLA.

-Hand sanitisers in PET: an advantageous choice with SMI stretch-blow moulding solutions

The increasing awareness of hand hygiene, which has gained a key role in the fight against Covid-19, has determined a significant growth in demand for hand sanitisers. To get an idea of how this market has recently grown and is expected to grow, it is enough to consider the figures provided by Grand View Research. In 2019, the global hand sanitiser market size value was $2.7bn. In 2020, it is expected to reach $3.3bn and to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 22.6% from 2020 to 2027.

The most common packaging material for hand sanitisers and personal hygiene detergents is PET, a material that has several advantages. First of all, it is characterised by an unrivalled strength-to-weight ratio, which leads to benefits for transportation. Moreover, PET containers do not break or shatter. This has advantages in terms of safety, especially compared to glass. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News

-UK unemployment to spike as economy slow to rebound

Reports on gross domestic product and jobless rate add to pressure on the government.

The U.K. economy will take longer to recover from the coronavirus than expected, it emerged Tuesday as two official reports painted a bleak picture of the country’s finances. Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News

The economy grew less than analysts expected in May, up 1.8 percent from April, according to the Office for National Statistics. That leaves the country’s output 24.5 percent lower than at the start of February.

UK economy shrinks 19% in March-May, chemicals stronger than most

The UK’s GDP fell by 19.1% in March-May as the country’s partial lockdown brought most economic sectors to a standstill, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday.

The chemicals sector’s output rose in March, then fell in April though to a lesser extent than other manufacturing sectors, and rose again in May (see bottom interactive graph).  Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News

Despite a recovery in May in chemicals-intensive sectors like construction and manufacturing, as workers started returning to work after some lockdown measures were lifted, most of the UK economy was still “in the doldrums” during that month, the ONS said.

Economic output rose by 1.8% in May, but that was not enough to offset falls of 6.9% in March and 20.4% in April.

-VCI calls for innovation instead of product bans in EU new chemicals strategy

Germany’s chemical industry association VCI (Frankfurt) says that innovation rather than product bans should be the focus of the new EU chemicals strategy, which the European Commission intends to present in the fall, said Chemweek.

VCI’s announcement relates to a European Parliament vote, due to take place, on a list of demands from its environment committee on the new chemicals strategy, which was announced as part of the EU Green Deal.  Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News

According to VCI, the committee is calling for major changes to chemicals legislation including the removal of quantitative thresholds, many additional tests of chemicals and animal testing, and blanket bans on use without prior risk assessment.

“The chemical-pharmaceutical industry supports a chemical strategy that promotes innovations to implement the EU’s climate goals, the circular economy, and digitalization. This requires a stable legal framework,” says Gerd Romanowski, managing director/science, technology, and environment at VCI.

-OPEC Projects 2021 Surge in Crude Demand

OPEC expects demand for its crude oil to rebound sharply next year, surpassing levels seen before the coronavirus crisis, as rival producers struggle to revive output.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries forecasts the need for its crude will surge by 25% in 2021 to average 29.8 million barrels a day, higher than the level required in 2019, according to a monthly report.

While the increase is partly driven by a recovery in global oil demand as economic growth resumes, an even bigger factor is the misfortune of OPEC’s competitors. After slumping 7.4% this year, the U.S. will see only limited production growth in 2021, the report showed.  Petrochemicals Graphene AdipicAcid News
