-Masterbatch masters the four seasons

A silicone masterbatch unveiled at Chinaplas 2019 by DuPont has been recently identified as suitable for use in tacky, very low-density PE (VLDPE) resins such as plastomers, which are used for the low sealing ignition temperature layer of multilayer PE blown films in high-speed food packaging.

The high friction of these VLDPE resins impacts the good sliding properties of the film over metallic equipment during the bagging operation.

Dow Corning AMB-12235 is a permanent slip/anti-block combination product that helps decrease the coefficient of friction (COF) of these tacky layers, while the additive has also been shown to further decrease the COF of the film against metal as well as the COF of the film against itself, which is the most commonly-measured parameter.

-Nestlé Waters North America to use 100% recycled plastic in three additional brands

Ozarka Spring Water, Deer Park Spring Water and Zephyrhills Spring Water packaging, which has long been 100% recyclable, will now be both 100% recyclable and made from 100% recycled plastic. Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber PET

With the expansion of recycled plastic (rPET) to these brands, nearly 60% of all households in the U.S. will have access to one of the regionally distributed spring water brands in bottles made entirely with recycled plastic.

“We have made significant strides on our journey to use more sustainable packaging,” said David Tulauskas, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of NWNA. “Bottles made with other bottles – like these – provide tangible proof that recycling works and the circular economy for plastics is achievable. By using recycled plastic, we are breathing new life into existing materials, reducing the need for new plastic and our carbon footprint, and supporting the 757,000 jobs in recycling and reuse activities in the U.S.”

-Nextchem and LanzaTech Sign an agreement to promote circular ethanol production

NextChem’s #CircularDistrict model is enhanced with a new dimension: in addition to hydrogen and methanol derived from the chemical conversion of plasmix and non-recyclable dry waste, it will now be possible to obtain ethanol, an important chemical for sustainable fuels and disinfectant production. Rome, July 23rd 2020. NextChem and US carbon recycling company, LanzaTech sign an agreement to license the “Waste to Ethanol” process line.

NextChem thereby expands its circular economy and chemical recycling technologies, adding circular ethanol technology to circular hydrogen and circular methanol production technologies (currently in the engineering phase), based on the chemical recycling of plastic and dry waste.

-CLARIANT AND JIANGSU JINNENG PARTNER IN CATALYTIC OFF-GAS TREATMENT AT PA PLANT

Clariant Catalysts (Munich, Germany) and Jiangsu Jinneng’s collaboration in off-gas treatment is off to a strong start in 2020. Jiangsu Jinneng’s innovative catalytic combustion unit and Clariant’s highly effective EnviCat VOC catalyst have been in successful operation at the phthalic anhydride (PA) plant of Shandong Qilu Plasticizers Co. Ltd. since November 2019.  Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber PET

The partners’ advanced emission control solution is used to purify production off-gas, which contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide.

Located in Zibo, Shandong province, the plant already employs another Clariant product, the high-yield OxyMax PA 690 catalyst, to produce 70,000 metric tons of PA annually.

-Pak PYMA decries 2.5% additional regulatory duty on yarn

The Pakistan Yarn Merchants Association (PYMA) recently expressed its frustration at the government for not offering relief on imported raw materials to the textile industry and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the 2020-21 budget. Association chairman Danish Hanif also termed the imposition of a regulatory duty of 2.5 per cent on raw materials ‘disastrous’.  Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber PET

Hanif urged the government to provide equal business opportunities based on a uniform policy for the export, import and industrial sectors.

Around 70 per cent of the need for polyester filament yarn (PFY), an important raw material for weaving, knitting and home textiles, is met by imports. PFY was subjected to a higher customs duty of 11 per cent and additional customs duty of 2 per cent and PYMA has been opposing this for three years. However, it has not been abolished, he was quoted as saying by Pakistani media reports.

-Plastics use in vehicles to grow 75% by 2020, says industry watcher

By 2020, the average car will incorporate nearly 350 kg of plastics, up from 200 kg in 2014, according to analyst IHS Chemical (Englewood CO). Meanwhile, the market for carbon fiber in car manufacturing is expected to nearly triple in the coming years. Usage of carbon fiber in automotive manufacturing will increase to 9,800 tonnes in 2030, up from 3,400 tonnes in 2013. These predictions are made in a report titled, “Weight Reduction in Automotive Design & Manufacture.” Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber PET

Cars represent a fast-growing market for the chemicals industry according to IHS, with global car shipments expected to nearly double over the next 17 years, rising to 104.1 million units in 2020, up from 56.9 million vehicles in 2003 based on information from IHS Automotive. The majority of the growth will be propelled by the fast-expanding Chinese market.
