-Intermediates & polyesters prices increased YoY in Q1 FY22: RIL

Prices of intermediates and polyester like paraxylene (PX), purified terephthalic acid (PTA), monoethylene glycol (MEG), polyester filament yarn (PFY), polyester staple fibre (PSF), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) increased on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal 2022, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) said in its Q1 report.

During April-June 2021, PX prices increased by 75 per cent YoY with higher crude price. PX-Naphtha delta increased to $244/MT, up 14 per cent YoY and 25 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) with firm demand and supply constraints.

PTA price increased by 74 per cent YoY in-line with firm PX prices. PTA delta increased to $214/MT, up 72 per cent YoY with firm polyester demand, however marginally lower by 5 per cent on QoQ basis.

MEG prices increased by 56 per cent in line with higher feedstock prices and margins improved by 4 per cent YoY to $241/MT. Margins were, however, 17 per cent lower on QoQ basis with improved supply from US post arctic freeze.

A research team from Göttingen University in Germany has developed a new type of bioplastic or hydroplastic that is based on cellulose, which makes up the main component of a plant’s cell wall.

A small modification of the cellulose structure through process known as hydrosetting creates a new material that the researchers have dubbed cellulose cinnamate. This organic plastic has a number of unique characteristics. For instance, it is easy to recycle, inexpensive to produce, and malleable and moldable when it comes into contact with water.

The disadvantage is that it cannot be used for storing any wet products, such as juice for example, as it will lose its shape again.

-SmartFactory – Developement of Smart Factories in textile industry with Industrie 4.0 approaches

Aim of the project SmartFactory is to frame the special demands of Product and Process Quality Management of Indusrtie 4.0 in Textile Industry and derive concrete approaches and possible potentials. To do this the current status in Production of Home Textiles with Jacquard Weaving is analyzed by Institute of Textile Technology (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University. As result the typical processes and structures for a Smart Textile Fabric of Future are expected. Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

As shown in the picture the project is divided into two main parallel branches on the mend to Smart Textile Fabric. The first goal is to develop the Smart Weaving Factory. In the smart weaving factory the weaving machines are upgraded to so-called Cyber-physical systems and are able to intelligently interact with their environment. The project is focused on automatic Process and Product Quality Control. The second goal is to develop a consistent Communication Strategy to link the Production Chain as a basis for the Smart Textile Fabric. To do this an existing strategy from other industrial branches is picked and concretized for a weaving company with an implementation recommendation. It is used as a guideline for further developments and includes vertical and horizontal communication.

-SeaHelp asks not to be careless with plastic waste

With many local textile-garment makers unable to confirm when they can resume operations, many of their foreign business partners are switching orders from Vietnam to other countries.

Beach walks were one of the exciting experiences of summer vacations by the sea in my childhood. The object was to find treasures such as mussel shells, snail shells, sea urchin spines, remains of crab shells and other mysterious remains of sea creatures. All of this can still be found on seashores today, and it has been joined by another fraction of flotsam and jetsam. Garbage of every size class, consisting of a wide variety of materials. Dominant: plastic.  Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

The 200 or so different types of plastic are based on petroleum and consist of long chains of giant molecules called polymers. Depending on the desired use, the plastic in question can be solid to featherweight, rigid to flexible, and extremely diverse in design due to chemical additives. Since plastic does not rust, it is also ideally suited for use in marine environments. At home, we encounter bottles and plastic bags made of polyethylene of different densities (PET and LDPE), packaging made of bubble wrap (PVC) and polystyrene (PS and EPS), toys and furniture made of polypropylene (PP). All this is practical, has many advantages and one major disadvantage: if the material is not properly disposed of in the environment, it causes enormous damage there because of its durability. Especially in the sea.

-National hydrogen strategy: how do hydrogen cars work?

Hydrogen should be the savior in the energy transition. What cannot be electrified directly or with sufficient comfort should be powered by hydrogen. Accordingly, the German federal government assigns hydrogen an important role in the decarbonization of the German economy. Our series of articles wants to take a closer look at the plans of the federal government and shed light on specific areas of application – especially in the automotive sector. Whatever is technically possible should also be checked for efficiency and scalability.  Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

With a delay, the goal of one million registered electric vehicles in Germany could soon be achieved. Originally, this mark should have been cracked in 2020. Due to the rapid growth that is currently being observed in the sale of electric cars, the delay is now likely to be less than originally expected. However, in addition to the purely battery-electric cars, hybrid vehicles are also counted – and fuel cell cars, which are hardly noticed. But why do hydrogen vehicles currently have such a bad lobby? And how do they differ from battery-powered vehicles?

-US Celanese sees auto improvement beginning in Q3

US auto production should begin to pick up in the back half of this year as supply of resin and microchips improves, US Celanese CEO Lori Ryerkerk said Friday.

Vehicle production has been hampered this year particularly because of a shortage of microchips, as the coronavirus pandemic caused a spike in demand for computers and other products that rely on the chips.  Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

Both the US and Germany saw a large drop-off in auto production, and those are two of the company’s largest markets for engineered materials, Ryerkerk said during the company’s Q2 earnings call.

The amount of material that Celanese sells to the auto sector fell by 8% quarter on quarter but Ryerkerk said that the decline was smaller than the mid-teen drop in automobile build rates in North America and Germany.

During the quarter, there were also industry-wide shortages of several resins, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and nylon.

Because of the chip shortage, automakers have focused on producing higher-end models, a segment in which Celanese specialises.

-New Standard to Help Prevent Plastic Pellet Loss

BSI, in its role as the UK National Standards Body, has today published a new standard to help organizations achieve and maintain zero plastic pellet loss across their pellet handling operations (See the press release on BSI website here).

The new standard, named PAS 510: Plastic pellets, flakes and powders – Handling and management throughout the supply chain to prevent their leakage to the environment – Specification, sets out requirements for the handling and management of plastic pellets, flakes and powders throughout the supply chain to prevent spills, leaks and loss to the environment. It covers topics such as organizational responsibilities, leadership and commitment, competence and training, risk assessment and operational controls.  Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

Read a Factsheet on the PAS 510 Here

Plastic pellets, flakes and powders are the raw materials used to make plastic products, including mouldings, pipes and packaging. As a result of handling and management practices, pellets can be lost to the environment at every stage of the plastic supply chain from production and manufacturing to transport and storage1. Once in the environment, pellets and other types of microplastics, are known to be eaten by a range of animals and are known be harmful2.

-Vietnam sees decline in textile orders

With many local textile-garment makers unable to confirm when they can resume operations, many of their foreign business partners are switching orders from Vietnam to other countries.  Petrochemicals Hydrogen cars

In April this year, Italian fast-fashion group Teddy began signing contracts to place orders with the HCMC-based MyOne Fashion Company, with their cooperation extending until the end of September 2021. However, while MyOne is ramping up efforts to complete orders that have already been signed, it has not made headway with several orders due to Covid-19 related complications in Vietnam.

Le Van Tam, director of MyOne Company, said, “It is impossible for the firm to complete orders signed this year in a timely manner, let alone securing new orders.”

Other businesses in the textile-garment industry are also facing similar problems.

Pham Van Viet, board chairman of the Viet Thang Jean Company in HCMC, said that the stay-at-home mandate under the prime minister’s Directive 16 has significantly affected the firm’s operations.
