-Headache for OPEC as oil market structure signals return of glut

The development is a headache for OPEC, which had been hoping demand would recover quicker after a round of record global output cuts

Rising OPEC and U.S. oil supply, coupled with stalled economic and crude demand recovery, have pushed the futures market structure back to indicating a surplus, last observed during oil’s collapse in April and May amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The development is a headache for OPEC, which had been hoping demand would recover quicker after a round of record global output cuts. The group will either have to consider further production cuts or tolerate lower oil prices for longer.

The surplus market structure, when prompt prices are weaker than future prices, is also a boon for traders, as they can store crude in the hope to resell it later at a profit. Royal Dutch/Shell , Total , Eni and Norway’s Equinor have all reported bumper trading profits over the past week.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Polyamide

-Klöckner Pentaplast commits to PET capacity expansion for the sustainable consumer and protein packaging market in North America

Klöckner Pentaplast (kp), a global leader in recycled content products and high-barrier protective packaging, announces its commitment to expand its post-consumer recycled PET extrusion capacity by 17,500 metric tonnes, which significantly increases it’s capacity for thermoformed recyclable protein trays in North America.

The multimillion-dollar capacity expansion will be located among the eight, North American locations that are best situated to serve its sustainable consumer and protein packaging customer base.

The extrusion capacity expansion which includes special super-cleaning technology, supports the continuous, increased demand for a higher percentage of post-consumer recycled content (PCR), in various consumer and health packaging applications. The thermoforming expansion responds to an increasing demand for sustainable PCR solutions in strategic markets our customers operate in. By increasing capacity for sustainable packaging solutions, we are ensuring that our customer’s sustainability targets can be met in the future.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Polyamide

-Petkim posts USD20M profit in Q2 2020

Turkey’s first and only integrated petrochemical plant, Petkim, a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), reported a TL 145 million (approximately USD20 million) profit in the second quarter of 2020, reported Chemweek.

According to the statement made by the company on Monday, Petkim’s sales revenue reached TL 2.2 billion with domestic sales recording a 10% increase in the March-May period compared with the previous quarter.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Polyamide

During the period, the plant, located in the Izmir province in the Aegean region, prioritized the production of medical supplies and raw material for packaging to help the country’s fight against the pandemic.

Anar Mammadov, head of SOCAR Turkey’s refining and petrochemicals department, said the STAR refinery located near Petkim continued to supply the plant with the raw material naphtha without any interruptions.

-Aqua d’Or relies on Resilux to lead its sustainable revolution

Resilux is helping Aqua d’Or to become the most sustainable water brand in Denmark, while setting new standards for transparency by using certified recyclates.

Upmarket water brand, Aqua d’Or, is on a quest to become the most sustainable water brand in Denmark.

Aqua d’Or takes the next step towards circularity by launching the 2nd bottle made of 100% recycled PET in Denmark, after the successful launch of the 1,25l bottle in 2019.

Their best-selling SKU, the 0.5L bottle, is now also being made with recycled PET from Poly Recycling, a company of the Resilux Group. Petrochemicals Nylon66 Polyamide

In addition, it is Aqua d’Or ambition to be 100% circular for all bottles by 2022.

-Potential challenges and opportunities of using chemical recycling for plastic wastes

Plastic polymers comprise about 40% of the output of the global chemical recycling sector1. As we use and make plastic today, for each kilogram that is not reused or recycled, another kilogram is produced from non-renewable, fossil-based raw materials.

Recycling of plastics waste into new plastics is an approach to increase the circularity of supply chains. According to the ‘Accelerating circular supply chains for plastics’ report by Closed Loop Partners, the demand for recycled plastics is strong, however the current supply of recycled plastics meets just 6% of this demand. -The materials transition could divert 382 million tonnes of plastic waste by 2040

The plastics industry requires a paradigm shift towards an absolute decoupling of materials consumption from growth of the economy if it is to achieve sustainability targets, according to new research from research firm Wood Mackenzie, said Canplastics.

“This shift, a term we call the materials transition, is the process through which we account for – and seek to minimise – the costs of extracting and disposing of raw materials consumed in the global economy,” said Guy Bailey, Wood Mackenzie’s head of intermediates and applications. “The materials transition is driven by societal concern, regulatory interventions and technological innovation.”

If all plastic packaging companies put the materials transition at the heart of their sustainability strategies, what would this mean in terms of plastic production and waste generation? Wood Mackenzie ran two scenarios focused on the major packaging polymers – polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) – to answer this question. A “Current Path” scenario represents the world if it continues as it is today, while a “Sustainable Future” scenario sees more stringent legislation implemented to incentives companies to be ambitious. -Ube Industries and Nagoya University Commissioned by NEDO to Develop Advanced Separation Technology for Composite Plastics

Ube Industries, Ltd. (President: Masato Izumihara) and Nagoya University (President: Seiichi Matsuo) announced today that the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has commissioned the collaborating parties to develop advanced separation technology for composite plastics. The parties submitted the proposal after NEDO issued a public call for projects to develop chemical recycling technology that enables waste plastics to be efficiently used as chemical raw materials. The project is being implemented as part of NEDO’s leading research program in the field of energy and environmental new technologies. The project is to be completed by March 19, 2021.

The commissioned technology will enable the separation of composite plastic products, such as multilayer films for packaging, into their constituent components. The aim is to develop material recycling technology for recycling singular constituent plastics from composite plastic waste. The commissioned technology will potentially enable low-energy and low-cost separation into constituent components, and will substantially conserve resources and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as an innovative recycling technology. -Research partnership to turn coal into high-value carbon fiber

$10 million project funded by the DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy

University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are teaming up on a $10 million project to transform coal into high-value carbon fibers and composites. The project was funded by the DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy.

This project, titled “C4WARD: Coal Conversion for Carbon Fibers and Composites,” seeks to develop the fundamental and translational science and engineering necessary to create energy-efficient and cost-effective processes for manufacturing carbon fibers with tunable properties. It will address challenges associated with coal processing, variability in coal feedstocks, and carbon fiber manufacturing scale up from laboratory to semi-production scale.
