-China crackdown could knock crude oil import growth to 20-year low

Beijing’s crackdown on the misuse of import quotas combined with the impact of high crude prices could see China’s growth in oil imports sink to the lowest in two decades in 2021, despite an expected rise in refining rates in the second half.

Shipments into the world’s top crude importer and No. 2 refiner could be steady, or increase by up to 2% to just over 11 million barrels per day (bpd) this year, consultancies Energy Aspects, Rystad Energy and Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS) found. Petrochemicals PET bottle

That compares to an average annual import growth rate of 9.7% since 2015, and would be the slowest growth since 2001, China customs data showed.

The flat forecasts coincide with plans by OPEC+ to raise oil output by 400,000 barrels per day between August and December. News of the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allied producers sparked a sell-off in benchmark prices LCOc1 this week.

-Making Polypropylene the Next Big Thing in Recycling

PureCycle Technologies’ solvent-based recycling process returns polypropylene to a pristine state.  Petrochemicals PET bottle

Polypropylene (PP) is a popular material of choice for many different kinds of applications. However, its recycling story is still very much a work in progress. Only about 1% of the 170 billion lb of PP consumed last year was recycled, compared with almost 20% for PET, according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The Recycling Partnership’s 2020 State of Curbside Recycling report says there may be as much as 1.6 billion lb of PP available per year from single-family homes that could be recycled into new products ranging from automotive parts to personal-care and food packaging.

“The thing about polypropylene that makes it a beauty and a curse is that it’s so diverse,” says Dustin Olson, chief manufacturing officer for PureCycle Technologies, based in Orlando, Fla.

-Thies collaboration with Navis TubeTex

Yarn and fabric dyeing equipment now complements an established range of tubular and open-width textile finishing machines. Petrochemicals PET bottle

Navis TubeTex is to act as the agency for Thies dyeing machines, chemical dispensing units and heat recovery systems in Canada, Honduras, and the USA.

Based in Lexington, North Carolina and founded in 1929, Navis TubeTex already offers a diverse range of machines for tubular and open-width textile finishing. The addition of Thies machines broadens its offering to include yarn and fabric dyeing.

“Having the ability to sell the Thies range of machinery will enhance our customers’ abilities to add value, save money through automation and reduce environmental impacts from manufacturing,” said Will Motchar, Navis TubeTex president and CEO. “We’re being asked routinely how our technologies can help meet financial and environmental goals, and Thies helps strengthen our ability to respond.”

-Europe PET torn between logistics mayhem and lockdowns easing

Gone are the days of predictable trends in the European  polyethylene terephthalate (PET) market as it rides the choppy waters of momentous global events.

The second half of 2021 will be characterised by higher costs for shipping, and industry which increasingly fails to offer reliability in delivery times.

Global warming is set to cause extreme weather events, like those just seen in northwest Europe or Chian, also set to hit logistics or production on occasion.

Finally, while the pandemic’s long-term effect on end users behaviour remains to be seen, it is probably safe to say PET’s old tranquil days are history.

SHIPPING

Logistics will remain problematic.

Even if delays to shipments subside, costs are unlikely to fall significantly, according to sources. Petrochemicals PET bottle

“The view in Asia is it won’t get better until next Chinese New Year, and there is no guarantee it will get better after that,” a buyer said.

The market was thrown into disarray in late 2020 when it became clear that shipping was an issue that clashed with the damage caused by hurricanes in the US.

-Erema joins Chemical Recycling Europe

The equipment manufacturer considers chemical recycling a useful addition to recycle as much plastic waste as possible.

Erema announced that the Austrian group has joined the Brussels-based Chemical Recycling Europe association in July 2021. Petrochemicals PET bottle

The machine manufacturer and provider of recycling services says it is doing so to intensify networking and cooperation in the plastics industry and joined Chemical Recycling Europe because it sees chemical recycling as a complement to mechanical recycling as a way to recycle the maximum amount of plastic waste overall. Erema believes that in order to achieve the European Union’s targets for plastics recycling and the use of recyclates, the technical possibilities of mechanical recycling would first have to be fully exploited by expanding the collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure and by further developing technologies and end-use applications.

For material streams where this recycling route reaches its limits, however, it were important to establish and use additional processes such as chemical recycling.

-Biodegradable packaging; novel plastic material

DRDO launches biodegradable packaging products

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with Acharya Nagarjuna University and Ecolastic, has launched environmentally safe packaging products made from natural and plant-based food-grade materials. The soluble and insoluble bags can be biologically degraded in three months and cause no harm to the environment whatsoever. Petrochemicals PET bottle

Unlike the conventional polyethylene bags made from petrochemicals, which are highly unsafe to the environment and takes years to degrade, these bags are sustainable, cost-effective, and ocean-safe alternatives to single-use plastics. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam has approved the distribution of these products, while DRDO will campaign for further distribution of such products.

The novel plastic material has been developed by researchers from China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology. And it came into existence while working on an advanced type of chemical sensor. This happened due to the material’s unique molecular structure, and the chains of monomers offered the film a deep red colour and disappeared as soon as the bonds broke.

-Consumer demand for sustainable packaging leading to premium pricing, redesigns – Dow CEO

Growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging is leading to premiums for recycled plastics, along with packaging redesigns to enable recycling, said the CEO of Dow.  Petrochemicals PET bottle

“We are seeing a real demand pull from consumers and brand owners that want more post-consumer recycled material in there or they want more material that’s made from either a bio-source to ethylene or something that is made from advanced (chemical) recycling to get back to feedstock and back to a product,” said Jim Fitterling, CEO of Dow, on the company’s Q2 earnings conference call.

“When it comes to post-consumer recycled materials into packaging… we are starting to see premiums. You’ve got brand owners who are announcing that they’re allocating premiums for recycled materials to address circularity [and] I think that’s a sign that their customers want it,” he added.

The additional cost on a per package basis would be very small, where it might add $0.01 to the retail cost of the product. However, there is a significant cost through the value chain to produce the materials, the CEO noted.

-European Bioplastics talks about Chemical Recycling

Some might say the surging investments in chemical recycling is taking away the attention on the development and commercialization of bio-based plastics but according to the European Bioplastics Association, chemical recycling is an important option for bio-based plastics to the same extent as for fossil-based plastics.  Chemical Recycling of bio-based plastics contributes to a circular bioeconomy by keeping renewable content in the loop even longer, requiring not only fewer fossil resources but also less renewable feedstock to produce virgin bio-based plastics.

The trade association recently released a white paper reporting an overview of the various chemical recycling technologies being developed which has gained increased attention as a promising recovery technology especially for post-consumer plastic waste that is hard to mechanically recycle. Commercial availability of these processes are still limited and a legislative framework still needs to be established.

-North American resin prices on the move in June

Volatility continued in North American resin markets in June, with average selling prices for polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC all up over their May levels.

Prices for polystyrene were down for the month, with PET bottle resin prices flat. Prices for polycarbonate and nylons 6 and 6/6 also have increased since May 1.

Regional prices for all grades of PE were up an average of 5 cents per pound for the month, according to buyers and market watchers contacted by Plastics News. Makers of high density PE were attempting to add another 2 cents to that total, but that increase had not gone through to most buyers as of June 24.

Although PE supplies have been improving since a February ice storm hit Texas and disrupted much PE output, some supply chain challenges remain. Most recently, LyondellBasell Industries declared force majeure on linear low density PE made in La Porte, Texas.

Most regional PE prices had increased 5 cents in May and now are up 38 cents so far in 2021 and 58 cents since January 2020. HDPE prices are up 2 cents less than low and linear low density PE. The June price hike is the seventh consecutive for the PE market. Petrochemicals PET bottle

Market analyst Mike Burns said in an email that without additional disruptions, June PE inventory “should help aid the 90-day recovery.” Burns is with Resin Technology Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas.

“There’s still some tightness in the market,” added David Barry, a market analyst with PetroChem Wire in Houston. “Buyers can’t find everything they need, so they’re paying what they have to pay.”

A PE buyer in the Midwestern U.S. said the string of price increases “is getting pretty ridiculous,” especially in light of recent lower prices for ethylene feedstock.
