-PEF as a multilayer barrier technology: a sustainable way to enable long shelf life in PET bottles

Avantium Renewable Polymers, a 100% subsidiary of Avantium, plans to build a flagship plant for the production of FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a monomer for high performance polyesters such as PEF (polyethylene furanoate). The plant, which is aimed to be on-stream at the start of 2023, will have a nameplate capacity of 5 metric kilotons per year and be located in Delfzijl, the Netherlands.  Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

Avantium is already producing FDCA and PEF at a smaller scale from its pilot plant in the Netherlands and is using this material to accelerate the market introduction of various high-value applications, including those in packaging. Made from renewable resources, compatible with existing recycling equipment and with outstanding barrier properties (approximately 10 times better O2 and 20 times better CO2 barriers with respect to PET /1/, PEF is full of potential promise: not as a replacement for PET, but as a side-by-side complementary technology, enabling a full polyester solution for applications where both the performance and sustainability of the incumbent is not sufficient.

-Paraxylene producers in Asia nominated August contract prices at USD640-690 per tonne

Several major Asian paraxylene producers have announced their material contract prices for August shipments at USD640-690 per tonne, market sources told ICIS .

Thus, South Korean SK Global Chemicals announced its contract price for paraxylene for August at USD640 per tonne, CFR Asia, while American ExxonMobil announced its price for material supplies next month at USD690 per tonne, CFR Asia.

At the same time, Reliance also nominated the February contract price of paraxylene at USD640 per tonne, CFR Asia. Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

This year, participants in the negotiation process to agree on contract prices for paraxylene in the region failed to reach an agreement 7 times amid uncertainty in the market situation and low prices.

Paraxylene is a raw material for the synthesis of terephthalic acid – an intermediate product for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

-US Chemours expects ore prices used for TiO2

Chemours expects stable prices for the ores it uses to make titanium dioxide (TiO2), as it saw no disruptions to supply earlier in the year, the CEO of the US-based pigment producer said on Friday.

“We have not had any problem with supply from our suppliers from that standpoint at all,” said Mark Vergnano, Chemours CEO. He made his comments in an interview with ICIS.

While Chemours lacked any problems, the industry did have some issues earlier in the year, he said. Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

“There were some disruptions in the first quarter where some mines were shut down and transportation was an issue,” Vergnano said. “I would say it never affected us, but I know the industry had some issues.”

Looking ahead, he expects stable ore prices and no disruptions.

-China industries expand for fifth month; downside risks still high

China’s industries have remained in expansion mode for the fifth consecutive month in July, recovering from a record slump in February but downside risks to economic growth are high as the coronavirus pandemic rages on.

The official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) of the world’s second-biggest economy in July rose to 51.1 from 50.9 in the previous month, backed by recovering production and demand. Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

The production index for the month inched up 54.0, while the new orders index increased to 51.7.

PMI gauges the health of an economy’s manufacturing sector, with a reading of 50 and above indicating expansion, while a lower number denotes contraction.

-July contract prices of TPA in Europe rose by EUR8 per tonne

July contract prices for European refined terephthalic acid (TPA) rose by EUR8 per tonne amid rising paraxylene feedstock, ICIS reported.

The base price of the paraxylene contract in July was increased by EUR12.50 per tonne.

Thus, the July contract price of TPA increased by EUR8 per tonne and reached EUR476-510 per tonne, FD NWE (North-West Europe). Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

TPA is one of the main components for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

-A Primer Biodegradability Testing Methods

More businesses are focused on providing environmentally friendly products, and consumers are educating themselves about the companies they support.

In the past year, we have seen a growing interest and commitment to the environment at both the business and consumer levels. More businesses are focused on providing environmentally friendly products, sourcing sustainable materials and reducing the impact of their waste stream. Plus, consumers are better educating themselves about the companies that they support, the products they purchase and companies’ sustainability practices.  Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

This mindset has also carried over to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In PPE, the objective has always been to protect workers and their health. But, today, customers are looking for ways to be more environmentally responsible as well. At SW, the concern about our products’ impact on the environment has been top of mind for years.

-Research reveals why it’s hard to get smell out of polyester

Why does that favourite shirt, the one you’ve been wearing around the house since COVID-19 started, still stink, even after regular washing?

Chances are it contains polyester, which means that funky smell isn’t going to go away, according to a new University of Alberta study.

Laundering experiments showed that odorants—smelly compounds like those in sweat—are more attracted to polyester than to other fabrics like cotton, and don’t completely wash out.  Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

-Sort your plastics for proper recycling

LAST year, we had a rude awakening about plastics pollution. Plastics waste from Britain was dumped on our shores under the guise of trade.

Containers of dirty plastics, meant mostly for landfills, were apparently imported for recycling here.

China used to be the traditional destination for such wastes but had suddenly banned its import. In Britain, the plastics waste was exported because of some attractive compensation schemes. Petrochemicals PET CarbonFiber LLDPE

The issue came to light after pictures of piles of such wastes were splashed all over local media.
