-Indorama Ventures Continues its Commitment to PET Recycling with New Acquisition in Poland

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Industrie Maurizio Peruzzo Polowat spółka z ograniczoną odpowiedzialnością (IMP Polowat), a PET recycling facility in Poland. The acquisition consists of two assets, strategically located in Bielsko-Biala and Leczyca, close to the major population centers of Kraków and Warsaw. The production sites have a combined capacity of 23,000 tonnes of recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) flakes and 4,000 tonnes of rPET pellets. The company is supported by 118 employees.

The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2020, subject to regulatory approvals.

IMP Polowat has a solid presence as one of the leading PET recyclers in Poland. This acquisition is consistent with IVL’s ambitious target in scaling its recycling capacity to reach 750,000 tonnes by 2025. It also adds an attractive recycling platform for IVL in Eastern Europe, and will open up new opportunities to meet the increasing rPET demand for more sustainable packaging solutions. The combination of access to local bottle supply and trusted product quality will secure opportunity for IVL for growth and expansion over time.

-Beirut explosion: World reacts to deadly blast in Lebanon capital

Leaders across the globe offer support as Lebanese officials warn the number of dead and wounded is expected to rise.

World leaders have offered support to Lebanon following a massive explosion that killed at least 73 people and wounded more than 3,700 in the capital, Beirut.

While the cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, Lebanon’s internal security chief Abbas Ibrahim said the site of the blast in the port area of the city was housing highly explosive materials.

The explosion released shockwaves through the city, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky.

-ITHEC to be held online and over three days for the first time

From Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 October 2020, the International Conference and Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites (ITHEC) in Bremen, Germany, will be held online, and over three days instead of two, for the first time.

The 2020 programme comprises 50 lectures and 40 poster presentations on the application areas aerospace and automotive and new technologies.

Project Manager for ITHEC Daniel Schäfer said: “Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we decided to hold the Congress and the accompanying exhibition virtually this time, adjusting the structure at the same time.” Petrochemicals PET Graphene HomoPP

The Congress will take place at www.ithec.de.

The organisers are expecting over 500 specialists from industry and research to attend the fifth ITHEC to discuss the latest research about lightweight construction materials.

-Lightning stops Indorama ethylene production in Louisiana

A lightning strike has stopped production of plastic feedstock ethylene at a plant operated by Indorama Ventures Public Co. in Westlake, La.

The plant was hit by lightning on Aug. 1, causing “a plant trip of the facility and subsequent flaring,” according to a news release from Bangkok-based Indorama.

-Umicore profits shrink on automotive crisis impact; revenue, earnings beat estimates

Umicore (Brussels, Belgium) says its net profits for the first half of 2020 fell by 38%, to EUR91 million (USD107 million) from EUR148 million in the same period of the previous year, said Chemweek.Petrochemicals PET Graphene HomoPP

Sales declined by approximately 4% year on year (YOY), to EUR1.57 billion, beating analysts’ consensus estimate by 8.1%. Adjusted EBIT and adjusted EBITDA increased slightly compared with the first half of 2019, to EUR243 million—beating analysts’ estimates by 8.5%—and €376 million, respectively, it says. The company’s performance was hurt by the impact of COVID-19, especially on the automotive industry, which affected mostly its catalysis, and energy and surface technologies businesses, the company says. The strong performance posted by Umicore’s recycling business was not able to offset the overall impact of COVID-19. Second-quarter figures have not been disclosed.

-Chemical recycling gaining limited traction so far, too focused on plastic-to-fuel, report finds

A new report from the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) pushes back on growing discussions around “chemical recycling” or processing strategies supported by the plastics industry. Entitled “All Talk and No Recycling: An Investigation of the U.S. ‘Chemical Recycling’ Industry,” the report states the U.S. chemical recycling sector largely consists of plastic-to-fuel (PTF) operations rather than plastic-to-plastic (PTP) efforts.

Some recycling stakeholders — including plastics groups — have cited chemical recycling as a key effort meant to operate in tandem with traditional mechanical recycling. Environmental groups and some nonprofit recyclers, however, said the practice harms human health and the environment. The facilities have also been slow to come to fruition and fulfill their promises, according to critics. Petrochemicals PET Graphene HomoPP

“Industry has been trying to figure out chemical recycling for decades,” said GAIA U.S. Program Director Denise Patel, who told Waste Dive the new report shows those efforts “are just not panning out in ways that are either financially or technically feasible.”

-Mitsubishi Chemical to acquire European carbon fiber recycling companies

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) recently decided to acquire  two German carbon fiber recycling companies, CFK Valley Stade Recycling GmbH & Co. KG (CFK) and carboNXT GmbH, through its subsidiary Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials AG, as a part of the company’s efforts to promote the circular economy, said the company.

The acquisition is slated for completion around early August. Based on the MCHC Group’s medium- to long-term basic management strategy KAITEKI Vision 30, MCC views the circular economy as a key element in its realization of KAITEKI 2, and in-house product recycling is an important initiative within this strategy.
