-Latin American PET tight due to shortage of US feedstock
Latin American polyethylene terephthalate (PET) markets are facing tight supply due to a shortage of monoethylene glycol (MEG) caused by production interruptions in the US as a result of the landfall of two hurricanes in Louisiana in a span of only six weeks.
The shortage of MEG supply for resin production has led to tight resin supply in countries that depend on feedstock imports for PET production such as Mexico.
But Mexico’s PET supply tightened not only because of reduced operating rates, but also because of increased PET export volumes to the US.
The tight supply situation supported a 4 cent/lb October price increase in Mexico. Demand levels remain strong mainly from the foods and drinks packaging segment.
PET prices also increased in other Latin American countries where there is local resin production because of feedstock MEG shortage, tight resin supply and rising freight costs.

As part of a refined recycling system, the Scotish parliament has voted in favour of a deposit return scheme, set to be introduced in July 2022.

It’s estimated that UK consumers drink their way through a staggering 14 billion plastic drinks bottles, 9 billion drinks cans and 5 billion glass bottles each year. But as consumption has increased, so too has consumer awareness.

With the end of the summer, the peak season was over for the PET bottle segment, by far the largest segment within the PET market.
Teijin Frontier Co., Ltd., the Teijin Group’s fibers and products converting company, announced today an all-new high-absorption, quick-drying fabric inspired by the fine structure of diatomaceous earth used in bath mats.

-Latin American GDP to fall by 8.1% in 2020 – IMF
Latin America’s GDP will likely contract by 8.1% in 2020, the worst among the major regions of the world, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday in its World Economic Outlook (WEO).
The following table shows the economic forecast for Latin America and its two largest economies, Brazil and Mexico. It then compares 2019 with forecasts for 2020 and 2021. -Fraunhofer: incentives needed to boost use of recyclates
The use of recycled raw materials makes a direct contribution to tackling climate change, concludes the Fraunhofer Institute in a new study commissioned by the recycling major ALBA Group.Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Bioplastics
According to the study, ALBA saved more than 4.2 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2019 through the closed-loop circulation of 6 million tonnes of recyclables. ‘Recycling leads to far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than when primary raw materials are used,’ explains Axel Schweitzer, ceo of the group. ‘The use of our quality-tested recycled plastics, for example, reduces emissions of greenhouse gases by more than 50% in comparison with the production of plastics from crude oil. There is no better argument for the increased use of recyclates.’

The pandemic has hastened the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) outlook for the demise of crude oil as a motor fuel although it forecasts reasonable demand growth from the petrochemicals industry which looks set to continue to enjoy cheap feedstocks, a lack of competing material and a failure by the world to adopt recycling seriously.
From the 18.5m bbl/day the petrochemicals sector demanded in 2019, the figure is expected to stand at 19m bbl/day by 2030, an increase of 2.7%.
The forecast was included in the IEA’s annual World Energy Outlook, which this year was obviously marked by the pandemic’s hit to the crude oil industry, and looks set to end the year at 2013 levels according to the IEA in its September report.
