-ULMA Packaging welcomes new British standard for biodegradable plastic

ULMA Packaging UK has welcomed the introduction of a new British standard for biodegradable plastic as a promising new step towards further developing sustainable packaging.Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

Published by the British Standards Institution as PAS 9017, the new standard requires plastics claiming to be biodegradable to pass a test proving they break down into a harmless wax containing no nanoplastics or microplastics.

ULMA says the standard, benchmarked to a formula created by British company Polymateria to transform certain plastic items into sludge at a point in their lifetime, is applicable to products such as food films and cartons.

-The ‘circular economy’—neither safe nor sustainable

The circular economy holds out the hope of living within the planet’s resources. Turning aspiration into action is another matter.

A little over a year ago, schoolchildren across the globe embarked on huge strikes over the climate emergency. Our global economic system is unsustainable: continuous economic growth and endless consumption mean ever-increasing waste. Waste which is buried, dumped at sea or turned into ash pollutes the environment and creates the need to extract further raw materials.  Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

The European Union’s ambition to move towards a circular economy, and in particular its Circular Economy Action Plan, should therefore be welcomed. The circular economy implies radical change to how production and consumption are organised—away from a linear model of growth (extract, make, dispose) to a sustainable alternative (recycle, reuse, remake, share). Waste then becomes a resource.

-FET reinforces collaboration with Senbis

Fibre Extrusion Technology Limited (FET) of Leeds, United Kingdom, has further developed its association with tech company Senbis Polymer Innovations of the Netherlands. Both companies have a proven track record in sustainability through technological innovation and have been collaborating on a variety of projects, FET said in a statement today.

FET has long been at the cutting edge in new applications and process development for melt spinning fibre extrusion and will design and provide pilot extrusion lines with unique capabilities to produce technical yarns as well as textile fibres, the company adds.

Senbis Polymer Innovations divides its activities between R&D services and the production of sustainable polymeric products. The company is investing EUR 5.5 million over the next three years in a testing facility for the development of sustainable plastics at different scales, ranging from laboratory to production. This will facilitate the acceleration and upscaling of future developments relating to sustainable plastics.

A Senbis spokesperson commented: “It is a welcome addition to our current facilities that focus on technical yarns. The new line now enables us to develop textile fibres from, for example recycled polymers or biopolymers.” Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

Milliken’s clarifying agent for PP containers tested by RecyClass

‘Millad NX 8000’ technology from Milliken is fully compatible with the polypropylene recycling processes in Europe and poses no recyclability issues, according to the findings of an independent laboratory testing. Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

This clarifying agent is used in PP containers, to make them transparent similarly to PET, PS, and other optically clear materials. RecyClass approval applies to the technology itself, while the packaging using the technology must adhere to certain conditions to be considered fully compatible with the PP recycling stream. These include the maximum content of the technology of 0.4% compared to the overall packaging weight.-

-CarbonLite targets moulding industry with PP/PE blend

Recycler CarbonLite Holdings has developed a pelletised material using the caps and labels from the plastics bottles it recycles. It is targeting the injection moulding industry with its new offering, a blend of polypropylene and polyethylene dubbed CaPOLabel.

The new product is produced from post-consumer beverage container caps and labels that are ground into flakes and thoroughly washed prior to pelletising. Using a patented process, the flakes are extruded into a fully homogenised resin.

“CaPOLabel is an investment in and further dedication to our mission of resource preservation, sustainability and a circular economy,” said Jason Farahnik, CarbonLite’s director of strategy and development. “We are taking materials that would otherwise be destined for landfills or our oceans and waterways and creating a valuable low-cost post-consumer product.”  Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

-COLINES sets standards in stretch film production for PCR material

COLINES’ R&D department keeps taking steps forward on the path of recycling, with recent tests ran in co-operation with ExxonMobil on the ALLrollEX lines delivering important results. Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

Nicola Lombardini, R&D Manager of COLINES, said: “We performed very high-quality reels, both with a wide range of thicknesses and percentages of recycled materials. We reached up to 400 per cent ultimate pre-stretch value (ultimate strain) on a standard film production. Even when using a very high grade of recycled material, the reels offered good optical and mechanical qualities, perfectly suitable for today’s new market requirements. This is impressive if we consider that we used up to 60 per cent of PCR material. Our co-operation with ExxonMobil provides us with the confidence to achieve further milestones in the near future.”

-China petrochemical markets gain in active post-holiday trade

China’s domestic petrochemical markets are registering strong post-holiday gains on the back of tightened supply and robust restocking demand.

On October 13, the ICIS China Petrochemical Index rose 2.9% from end-September to 939.94, the highest number recorded since April.

The index is based on weighted average prices of 17 major chemical products in selected local markets.Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

Firm demand was fueling the price spike in the likes of styrene after China’s Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays on 1-8 October, while inventory at ports are falling.

SM imports are expected to slump in October to November on thin margins as cheaper supply is available in the domestic market. Petrochemicals PlasticRecycling Polyamide

Strong offtakes by traders and end-users should continue to lower inventory at ports.

For some, tight availability due to reduced imports pushes up domestic prices.
