Crude Oil Prices Trend
-Commodity Resin Prices Rebound
Resurgence in exports, stronger domestic demand, higher feedstock costs push prices back up for PE, PP, PS, PVC—but not PET.
Prices of four of the five major commodity resins were in various stages of an upward trajectory going into the third quarter.
PET was the exception, with tabs mostly flat due to high domestic production and continued imports.
Driving higher prices for the other resins were increased domestic demand (particularly for PE) and stronger export activity as North American suppliers regained their feedstock advantage once crude-oil prices jumped up to $40/bbl.
Clouding the future outlook were uncertainties about the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and expectations for an active hurricane season ahead.

And this month, the Canadian company got a high-profile boost from the French conglomerate Danone, makers of the Evian bottled water brand, who called Loop a “breakthrough technology company” and enlisted them for their quest to make all of its Evian bottles from 100% recycled plastic by 2025. Danone even revealed that Evian has designed a bottle without a label to reduce the presence of multiple types of plastics that can complicate or hinder recycling.

Elsewhere, people are using antibacterial wipes and bottles of hand sanitiser at a rapid rate, with some worrying that discarded “COVID waste” could soon outnumber jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea.

Major environmental issues, including plastics pollution and recycling, will take center stage at this year’s technology trade show Ecomondo.
Scheduled for 3-6 November in Rimini, Italy, the event will be hosting the international launch of the Bluemed Pilot Initiative for a healthy and plastic-free Mediterranean sea and coastline. A Transformative Era For Plastic Recycling
There are some signs that legacy oil and gas giants are planning ahead for a transformative plastic recycling scenario. For example, last year Royal Dutch Shell announced a pyrolysis-based method that produces chemical building blocks for new products from old plastic.

Novel algorithm developed to prevent failure of engineered genetic systems
A team of Penn State and University of Washington researchers recently developed a new algorithm to help prevent the failure of engineered genetic systems, or organisms engineered to have new capabilities. Petrochemicals Polyamide CarbonFiber PET
“Engineered genetic systems are the source of biotechnology’s revolution,” said Howard Salis, Penn State associate professor of biological engineering and chemical engineering and corresponding author of the study. “Engineered organisms produce a cornucopia of biorenewable products, including biodegradable plastic bottles, therapeutic proteins and nutritional supplements. Probiotic bacteria have been engineered to live in your gut and cure metabolic disease. The Impossible Burger was made possible by engineering organisms to produce heme.”
As part of their €750bn coronavirus pandemic recovery package, EU leaders agreed on a new EU tax on plastic packaging wastes-EU agrees tax on plastic packaging waste.
The tax, to be introduced as of 1 January 2021, will be calculated on the weight of nonrecycled plastic packaging waste “with a call rate of €0.80/kilogramme with a mechanism to avoid excessively regressive impact on national contributions.”

German environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) welcomed the tax, saying it was long overdue.
However, DUH said that the tax rate was “too timid”.
“We need a price that really causes a change in direction,” said DUH director general Jurgen Resch.
