-Materials: Novel Nylon 66 and Modified PPE Foams for Automotive

Asahi Kasei develops ‘first’ nylon 66 bead and modified PPE foams for challenging automotive applications.

Two new novel engineering thermoplastic foams have been recently unveiled by Asahi Kasei (U.S. office in Fowlerville, Mich.), both aimed at challenging automotive applications:

▪ Nylon 66 Bead Foam: Said to be a ‘first’, the company has been developing a foam based on nylon 66  beads. (Asahi Kasei is one of only four fully-integrated global nylon manufacturers that can  produce nylon 66 completely from monomer to compound). Dubbed PA Foam, the new foam features the typical heat, chemical and oil resistant properties of nylon, mixed with an outstanding rigidity or noise reducing quality – depending on the shape of the beads. Consisting of round-shaped beads, this foam features a strong rigidity, which makes it a promising alternative for aluminum and metal in structural applications, as well as for use for insulators, ducts, spacers or other lightweight parts of the battery case of electrified vehicles.

PA Foam with a C- or macaroni-shape version, on the other hand, reportedly provides noise insulation in addition to the typical nylon properties. Possible applications can be found everywhere around the car, especially in the engine compartment, where the material can unfold its unique qualities. Used for engine covers, it does not only contribute to light weight, but also significantly reduces the radiating engine noise, making the car quieter in total.

▪  SunForce particle foam based on a modified PPE. Compared to standard foams made of PS or polyolefins, the use of m-PPE is said to equip this foamed material with unique properties, opening up new possibilities for applications in thermal management and fire protection. The material is UL 94 V-0 certified (Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances) and thus contributes to an overall product safety.

-New PET Blow/Fill Line for Vinegar

This French company founded in 1797 recently installed a new Combi system for blowing and filling of PET bottles at speeds to 23,000/hr.

The rising demand for white vinegar has led Charbonneaux-Brabant, a key player in the packaging of condiments and seasonings, to install a complete PET line in its new production plant in Vauvert, in the South of France. There, they now bottle white vinegar in 1- and 1.5-L formats, managing a high level of flexibility requested by their supply chain and distribution network. The new line was supplied by Sidel.

-No-deal Brexit could wipe $3 billion off Turkey’s UK trade, minister says

Turkey may lose trade with Britain worth up to $3 billion in the event of a no-deal Brexit, Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan said on Wednesday, adding that many Turkish companies lacked information on the consequences of such a scenario.

Pekcan, speaking at a Turkey-UK Business Forum in Istanbul, said the losses would stem from Britain hiking import tariffs after Brexit in sectors including steel, automotive and textiles.

-Recycled Plastic Market To Be Worth Just Over US$ 30 Billion By 2025

Recycling of plastic is broadly defined as collecting waste plastic scraps that are recyclable, processing it with various technologies, and finally treating it with chemicals and additives to produce a newer plastic. The improved quality of recycled plastic products over their virgin counterparts, the push from different companies, and strict governmental regulations are the main drivers of the recycled plastic market. Persistence Market Research in its upcoming report titled ‘Recycled Plastic Market: Global Industry Analysis 2012 – 2016 and Forecast 2017 – 2025’, projects the recycled plastic market to be worth just over US$ 30 billion by 2025. -FreshSafe PET dispute goes to arbitration

One of Turkey’s largest regional producers of fruit and vegetable drinks is suing German bottling and packaging machinery maker KHS over claims that the latter failed to manufacture and commission production lines according to a contract.

Doğanay Gida claims that bottle-filling production lines supplied by KHS were inoperable and the German firm failed to fix several errors later discovered to be the result of design faults and manufacturing errors by KHS. Doğanay claims that the resulting loss of capacity and quality control issues cost it more than €70 million ($76m).
