-IDTechEx forecasts 3.05% growth for bioplastics

Every day, approximately 8,000,000 pieces of plastic make their way into the world’s oceans and plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world.

Bioplastics such as polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates and polybutyl succinate, are biodegradable and can have similar, if not identical, functionalities to their fossil-based counterparts. Yet, despite their environmental benefits, bioplastics are still struggling to wrestle marketshare away from conventional plastics.

The new IDTechEx report, “Bioplastics 2020-2025”, explores the factors helping and hindering the adoption of bioplastics. Petrochemicals Synthetic Fabrics Plastics

-Manufacturing Phenolic Resin

Polymers are high molecular mass molecules consisting of repeating units known as monomers that are linked by covalent chemical bonds.

At the beginning of a batch type process the content of the reactor has a low viscosity and primarily consists of monomers.

Once heat and/or a catalyst are introduced, the process of polymerization begins and viscosity becomes higher. Petrochemicals Synthetic Fabrics Plastics

Viscosity is an indirect way of quantifying the molecular mass of polymers.

-Coronavirus threatens US plastics recycling as states cancel collections

The coronavirus pandemic has created a wave of complications for the recycled plastics industry and hampered short-term supply of plastic waste, with several US areas suspending recycling programs, and concerns about transmission creating problems for waste processors.

Ten states in the US currently have “bottle bills”, or mandatory container buyback programs. Now, eight of these ten states – Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, New York, and Vermont – have temporarily halted enforcements that require retailers to participate in these container redemption programs. This means that residents in these states are no longer able to redeem their used beverage bottles for deposit value. Petrochemicals Synthetic Fabrics Plastics

-US April benzene contracts drop over 50% on falling global crude values

US April benzene contracts settled at $1.21/gal FOB (free on board), a drop of more than 50% from March, as global crude values continue to move spot prices lower.

The April decrease of 136 cents/gal ($409/tonne) puts contracts at their lowest level since settling at $1.01/gal in January 2009.

Spot prices dropped in March as the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic continues to push down global crude values. Benzene demand has also dropped off, reaching new lows during the same period.Petrochemicals Synthetic Fabrics Plastics

-CARE says it will help out struggling carpet recyclers

A stewardship group is boosting subsidies for California’s carpet recycling companies, which have been hit with a double whammy of coronavirus impacts and low virgin plastic prices. Petrochemicals Synthetic Fabrics Plastics

Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), which runs California’s extended producer responsibility program for carpet, announced on March 31 it would shell out more money to help keep beleaguered carpet reclaimers in business. The companies recycle millions of pounds of nylon 6, nylon 6,6, PET, PTT and PP from post-consumer carpet.

CARE’s emergency actions include cutting one-time checks to recycling companies, accelerating subsidy payments, boosting the subsidy rate and more.
