July brought a little of everything for North American resin markets — higher prices, lower prices and flat prices. Petrochemicals Textile Polymers
Higher prices were seen for polyethylene, polypropylene and PET bottle resin. A 5-cent PE increase was delayed by negotiations between suppliers and buyers and by differences reported by widely followed price indexes. Most buyers contacted by Plastics News indicated that the 5 cents had taken hold by late July or early August.
PE demand has remained very strong, with some grades of high density PE for injection molding in especially short supply, according to market sources. PE supplies also were tightened when LyondellBasell Industries lost several days of production in La Porte, Texas, after a July 27 acetic acid leak killed two workers and injured 30.
But supplies of other grades of PE were improving, and sources said a number of buyers were “burned out and frustrated” after absorbing multiple rounds of price hikes in the last 18 months.
Regional prices for all grades of PE were up 5 cents in June. Most PE prices are up 43 cents so far in 2021 and 63 cents since January 2020. HDPE prices are up 2 cents less than low and linear low density PE. The July price hike was the eighth consecutive for the PE market.
The 2-cent PP move followed a similar increase in prices for polymer-grade propylene (PGP). The increase is far less than June’s 12-cent hike and the 13-cent increase in May. Factoring in previous increases and decreases, PP prices are up a net of 68.5 cents since December.
Regional PP makers had attempted to add 5 cents of margin improvement to the 2 cents in monomer movement but were unsuccessful. Market sources said producers now will try to win that 5 cents in August.

The KraussMaffei Group will transfer all activities of the former KraussMaffei High Performance AG into an independent unit effective October 1, 2021. This will operate under the traditional name NETSTAL. Petrochemicals Textile Polymers

The funds will help the Clyde, Ohio, company expand bottle-to-bottle PET recycling.
The American Beverage Association and the Ohio Beverage Association, in partnership with Closed Loop Partners, are investing $5 million toward Evergreen’s $22 million expansion of its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant in Clyde, Ohio. Petrochemicals Textile Polymers
Half of the $5 million investment is from the American Beverage Association in partnership with Closed Loop Partners through the beverage industry’s Every Bottle Back initiative, and the other half from Closed Loop Partners’ Infrastructure Fund.
Earlier this year, Evergreen announced its plans to double production capacity at its plant to 80 million pounds of recycled PET (rPET) annually by 2022.
Greg Johnson, Evergreen corporate vice president, told Recycling Today at the time of the announcement that the investment will include upgrading four of the six optical flake sorters on its wash line with equipment from Germany-based Tomra Sorting Recycling as well as the addition of 54,000 square feet to its existing 240,000-square-foot building in Clyde to accommodate a third pelletizing line to be supplied by Vienna-based Starlinger. Evergreen also will install two solid-state polycondensation (SSP) reactors from Starlinger, on two of its pelletizing lines. The SSP reactors decontaminate the flakes and increase the intrinsic viscosity of the rPET pellets the company produces, according to Starlinger.
Since Aug, PET bottle chip capacity shut down is around 3.6million tons. Till Aug 10, China PET bottle chip operating rate averaged down to 70.7%. (78% based on designed capacity of 12.46 million tons/year).
The reason of O/R decline mainly comes from two points: 1. the large high/low spread and slack new order intake. PET bottle chip processing spread has been hovering around 400-500yuan/mt for a long while. 2. Export shipping fee remains expensive and supply of container is tight. Petrochemicals Textile Polymers
Recently, due to the spread of the epidemic, logistics and transportation in some areas have been affected, hence delivery of polyester raw material and products are both restrained. Some PET bottle chip plants are forced to cut down production. Overall, delivery is still sustainable, though slower.
Looking from end-user perspective of view, procurement by beverage and edible oil plants is rigid, particularly some factories that haven’t built enough stock previously. PET sheet sector, operating rate in S. China is merely 40-50% while basically stands at 70-80% in E. China. For most PET sheet producers, 7000yuan/mt is the top cost line they can accept, and contract violation was heard before as PET resin value moved to higher than 7000yuan/mt.

MEGlobal has announced its Asian Contract Price (ACP) for monoethylene glycol (MEG) to be shipped in September 2021, according to the company’s press release.
Thus, on 11 August, the company said ACP for MEG would be at USD870/MT CFR Asian main ports for arrival in September 2021, up by USD30/tonne from the previous month. Petrochemicals Textile Polymers
The August 2021 ACP reflects the short term supply/demand situation in the Asian market.
As MRC reported earlier, MEGlobal announced its August ACP for MEG at USD840/MT CFR Asian main ports, up by USD10/tonne from July.

According to ICIS-MRC Price report, Russian producers raised their July contract PET prices to the range of Rb102,000-114,000/tonne CPT Moscow, including VAT. In the absence of sharp fluctuations in the rouble exchange rate in August, contract prices are likely to continue rising in September.

When plastics are heated using pyrolysis they are, in simple terms, broken down into the oils from which they were created.
Plastic which is currently in circulation could be treated using pyrolysis, turned into oil, then re-moulded to create new or ‘virgin’ plastics and then, new products. The term pyrolysis is also known as ‘chemical recycling’. All types of plastics – including ones which are currently deemed unrecyclable – can be treated with pyrolysis. This type of plastic recycling is so useful due to the durability of plastics.
Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) has been awarded a contract for a project to construct a polypropylene (PP) plant in Ichihara-shi, Chiba, Japan from Prime Polymer, as per the company’s press release.
TOYO will carry out the EPC contract on a full turn-key basis that includes engineering, procurement, and construction.
