-China plans to grant foreign access to PTA futures trading

China’s securities regulator plans to move forward the legislative work of the futures law, and PTA will become the third commodity China will open to overseas investors following crude oil in March and iron ore in May, a senior official said on Saturday.

Purified terephthalic acid (PTA), a chemical compound, is a precursor to make clothing and plastic bottles. Over 90 percent of global PTA production is used in producing polyethylene terephthalate, or PET.

China will accelerate the opening-up of the country’s futures market and internationalize all the mature futures contracts in an effort to boost its pricing clout, said Fang Xinghai, vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).

-Crude Prices Mixed on Concerns Over Additional US Tariffs

O il prices pulled back on Friday on concerns that additional US tariffs would be placed on Chinese imports, after an earlier rally triggered by worries that more sanctions on Iran might constrict supply. Crude futures ended the week up more than 1.6%, CNBC reported.

Traders said an early rally on Friday was sparked by reports US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo was going to announce new sanctions on Iran.

“It increases the odds that there will be less oil coming out of there,” said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Price Futures Group.

The gains were curbed though by reports US President Donald Trump instructed aides to proceed with tariffs on about $200 billion more of Chinese products.

-Viewpoint: Plastic packaging isn’t the problem – our recycling infrastructure is

After all, the incentives for procuring and recycling plastic should make business sense, says Steve Fox, purchasing director at Bartlett Mitchell

There are many ways to respond to the problem of plastic in our everyday lives, and lots of people will have a different view. But one thing is for sure: banning the use of plastic packaging isn’t the answer. Having a strategic government policy to enable an integrated recycling infrastructure definitely is.

We are all becoming more aware of the fact that there are a number of widely recyclable plastics available. The most commonly used for food packaging by foodservice businesses is polyethylene terephthalate (commonly known as PET).

-Recycling Your Plastics Does More Than Saving The Environment

Your recycling efforts at home make a bigger difference than you probably realise. In South Africa the volume of recycled plastic material grows annually, with 334 727 tons recycled into raw material last year*.

“The immediate effect on the environment is that pollution is reduced, but in South Africa there is also the critically positive result of job creation,” says Rory Murray, Marketing Director at Tuffy Brands. “We have to start thinking differently about plastic, because re-using it creates a whole value chain.”

-Iran says crude oil market is too tight for U.S. zero exports target

Washington is seeking to cut Iranian oil exports to zero by November

The U.S. will find it difficult to cut Iran’s oil exports completely as the oil market is already tight and rival producers cannot make up the shortfall, a top Iranian official said on Friday.

Washington is seeking to cut Iranian oil exports to zero by November as it reimposes sanctions, and is encouraging other producers such as Saudi Arabia, other OPEC members and Russia to pump more to meet the shortfall.

-New US law to ease tariffs will not halt duties against Chinese products: ACC Plastic chemicals biochemicals crude oil

Houston — President Donald Trump has signed into law a bill that will reduce or suspend tariffs on roughly 1,660 products imported into the US, more than half of which are chemicals and plastics.

However, the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill of 2018, or MTB, which Trump signed late Thursday, does not apply to new so-called Section 301 tariffs on Chinese products implemented in July and August and potentially another chemical-heavy round that could be implemented as soon as late September.

-Micro Fine Cell

Our “Micro Fine Cell” foaming agents were specifically developed to produce a Micro Fine Cellular structure with the uniform distribution of the cells on a consistent basis throughout the production cycle.  “Micro Fine Cell” foaming agents are available as Endothermic or Exothermic foaming agents pelletized in the iDPel carrier compound. They are also available in powder or liquid forms.

Injection Molding The “MicroFine Cell” produces foam with a much smaller and tighter cell structure than normal endothermic CFAs, resulting in improved appearance and better physical properties.  Itis very effective in thin wall applications such as caps and closures.

-Is the reason behind PA66’s recent rise just because it is out of stock?

If the recent star products in the chemical industry are PTA, then the star products in the plastics industry are not PA66. Recently, Celanese Celanese and Aymans released the latest price increase letter. Celanese raised the price of PA66 and PA6 from September 17th: PA66 Asia increased by US$0.75, equivalent to RMB5124/ton; PA6 Asia increased by US$0.25, equivalent to RMB1708/ton. EMS Aimans raised the price of PA66 by RMB 5,000/ton from September 15.

-2008 financial crisis and unraveling of the BRICS

Export demand from the pre-crisis boom was a big driver of economic growth for the Brics countries. However, slow growth in world trade and threat of trade wars have curbed these tailwinds in the post-crisis world.

In September 2006, representatives of Brazil, India, Russia and China met in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting, and expressed their interest in multilateral cooperation.

-Maduro says oil finance commitments won from China

CARACAS – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Saturday he had new commitments from Beijing on funding for the oil industry on which crisis-hit Caracas relies.

Oil output is the main generator of Venezuela’s income but has fallen to its lowest level in three decades, with the South American country’s state-led economy in free-fall.

Analysts blame years of neglect during which state oil firm PDVSA’s infrastructure became rundown and exploration was curbed, while oil revenues were used to plug the fiscal deficit.

-Is OPEC prepared for the upcoming oil crunch?

The oil market is “tightening up,” the US International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its monthly report last week.

The report had many warnings about the tightness of the oil market as world demand for the black liquid is expected to top 100 million barrels a day in the next three months, while the supply picture isn’t rosy due to a fall in production in Latin America; a ban on Iranian shipments by the US; a fragile situation in countries like Libya; and finally, an infrastructure bottleneck in the Permian, America’s largest basin for shale oil.

-Iran forgetful of past as oil prices strengthen

Production outages in some OPEC countries are adding to the upward pressure on oil prices.

The upward momentum of oil prices has returned. In the week ending Sept. 14, the Brent crude price rose to $78.09 per barrel and WTI hit $68.99.

The Brent/WTI spread continues to widen significantly. From $5.50 at the end of July and $7.60 at the end of August, it closed at $9 per barrel on Friday.

This is mainly attributed to the very low inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma, which are 33.2 million barrels lower than last year’s levels.

-THINGS THAT MATTER: PLASTIC POLLUTION – PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

“Plastic or planet – which will it be?” That was the title and theme of my column of two weeks ago, and it generated what we Bajans call a “beriffle” of enthusiastic, even passionate responses – embellishing, giving examples, and pointing out solutions being tried all over the world. So today I want to share a few of these examples of plastic re-use – some simple, some brilliant, some totally visionary. Can we try any of them here in Barbados or, working together in CARICOM?

The first suggestion I received was a sensible approach to dealing with the nemesis of our roads – potholes. A single heavy rain breaks the surface of our roads, and the wear and tear of exponentially increasing pickup trucks and heavy-duty trucks soon produces pot-holes, woks and witches’ cauldrons all over the roads

-US tax reform poses a big threat to Canada’s chem and other sectors – study

The US tax reform is a huge threat to Canada, putting hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk, with petrochemicals and chemicals being particularly vulnerable, according to a study made available on Friday.

The study was commissioned by trade group Business Council of Canada which had asked consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to estimate the impact of the US tax reform on Canada.

“In total, we assess that approximately Canadian dollar (C$) 85bn ($65bn) in GDP, or 4.9% of Canada’s GDP; 635,000 employees, or 3.4% of Canadian employment; C$47bn in labour income; and C$20bn in government revenue are at risk as a result of the US tax reform,” the consultants concluded.
