-EIA reports draw of crude oil amid prices drop

HOUSTON– U.S. crude oil inventories decreased last week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in a report on Thursday.

According to the Weekly Petroleum Status Report by EIA, U.S. commercial crude oil inventories, excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), decreased by 4.3 million barrels during the week ending Aug. 31. The market’s expectation was a draw of 1.9 million barrels in crude oil.

-European cracker margins near three-month low on high naphtha flat prices

London — European petrochemical spot cracker margins have been holding around a three-month low after a recent strengthening in outright values of naphtha and falling spot prices for ethylene, the bellwether of the plastics industry.

Cracking margins rose to $520.62/mt Wednesday, up $23.22/mt from Tuesday when it was at its lowest point since May 29, S&P Global Platts data showed.

Singapore — The Asian acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene market his a year-to-date low Wednesday despite the peak season that usually falls between August and September.

“August and September is usually the period when buyers stock up their inventories to meet end-of-year demand, but this is not the case this year,” a Taiwanese seller said. “Demand has been very weak during this period.”

Nylons 6 and 66 are the key exceptions due to tightness of feedstock and resin.

As we head into fourth quarter, a combination of lower prices of some key feedstocks and improvements in both feedstock and resin availability appear to be resulting in a flat-to-lower pricing trend for PE, PP, PS, PVC, PET, ABS and PC. In contrast, tight feedstock and resin availability has been pushing prices upwards for nylons 6 and 66, with more of that trajectory likely to ensue.

-US ethylene glycol needs China export market

China’s tariffs against US imports threaten to hit the US economy where it could hurt it most – in areas where the US cannot afford to lose access to the China market.

This applies to agricultural products such as soybeans and many of the petrochemicals and polymers in which the US is undergoing major capacity expansions. The most extreme example in the petrochemicals sector is ethylene glycols (EG). On 8 August, China announced it would impose 25% import tariffs on a wide range of US petrochemicals and polymer imports, including EG. The tariffs came into effect on 23 August.
