US OLEFINS

US ethylene trade participants said they will continue to monitor high feedstock costs and a loss of production from a planned turnaround that began over the weekend. Ethylene spot prices established another six-month high Friday at 19.50 cents/lb FD USG, as the feedstock ethane market continued to move toward the 50 cent/gal level. Also, trade sources said Chevron Phillips began a 60-day turnaround at its Port Arthur, Texas, facility, which will take production offline. CP Chem would not comment on operations at its facility. US propylene trade participants were also monitoring high feedstock costs and recent production issues heading into this week.

-Trump’s sanctions on Iran could push oil prices above $100 per barrel

If U.S. sanctions end up cutting off Iranian oil supply completely, oil prices will likely hit $100 per barrel, said Fereidun Fesharaki, founder and chairman of consultancy FACTS Global Energy.

What’s currently holding back oil prices from moving higher is the ongoing trade friction between the U.S. and China, Fesharaki said.

A gas flare on an oil production platform in the Soroush oil fields is seen alongside an Iranian flag in the Gulf.

-EU committee electric vehicle targets unrealistic, a seismic shift for auto makers – ACEA

LONDON -Europe’s key automotive trade group attacked on Tuesday emissions-reductions targets voted on by the Environment Committee of the European Parliament (EP) as “totally unrealistic”, despite analyst projections of more affordable electric vehicles in coming years.

– EU  Committee backed proposals for much stricter EV targets

– Timeline is too stringent for the European auto sector, says ACEA

– Costs drops could put EVs at parity with regular autos by 2025, says UBS

The committee voted this week in favour of a proposal that would require auto makers in the EU to derive 20% of sales from electric vehicles or hybrids by 2025, rising to 40% by 2030.

For a few months now, OPEC has been boosting production to ease concerns about high oil prices amid expected supply losses from Venezuela and Iran.

The cartel’s largest producer and exporter, Saudi Arabia, has been specifically targeting an increase in crude oil exports to the most transparent market, the United States, which reports crude oil imports and inventory levels every week.

-OPEC Outages Are Driving Up Oil Prices

Geopolitics is once again driving oil prices, and after a pause this summer, tension and unrest could be back at the top of the agenda.

Last week, rioters burned down several buildings in Basra, a major city in Southern Iraq and home to most of the country’s oil production. Despite its oil riches, southern Iraq remains deeply unequal, which has fueled resentment and anger among the neglected populace even as international companies continue to ramp up production from Basra’s vast oil fields. Unemployment, poor public services, electricity outages (at the height of summer heat) and even contaminated water has stoked outrage.

-EMEA petrochemicals outlook, w/c Sep 10

London — OLEFINS AND FEEDSTOCKS: Flow of naphtha from Europe to Asia is expected to fall further as lower demand in Asia slashes the scope for European producers to move cargoes to the East. In the week ahead, suppliers in the Mediterranean will be pinning their hopes on the return of end-user demand for naphtha, while a strengthening butane complex on the back of blending demand for winter grade gasoline and expectations of a tightening propane market towards the end of the month may potentially raise naphtha’s share as petrochemical feedstock
