-Poland, Lithuania, Romania urge close EU-UK ties after Brexit

The foreign ministers of Poland, Lithuania and Romania have urged close EU-UK ties after Brexit.

Britain’s impending withdrawal from the European Union poses a number of challenges on both sides of the Channel, but the EU and the UK need each other on post-Brexit security, the three foreign ministers said in an article published by the Politico news service.

Poland’s Jacek Czaputowicz, Lithuania’s Linas Linkevičius, and Romania’s Teodor Meleșcanu said in the article that Brexit would leave a gaping hole in Europe’s foreign policy and that, without Britain, the EU’s position on the global stage might weaken, making it more vulnerable to external threats.

They argued that Britain, “in its capacity as a UN Security Council member, a nuclear power and a guarantor of approximately one-fourth of European defense capabilities — is one of the key pillars of the EU’s external action.”

-New Method Uses Sunlight to Convert Plastic waste into Usable Hydrogen

UK-based researchers have invented a simple sunlight-driven method for transforming plastic waste into usable hydrogen and some chemicals. The researchers, from the University of Cambridge, have discovered a method that employs quantum dots made of cadmium sulfide for the photocatalysis and degradation of plastics.

In the process of transforming plastic waste into usable hydrogen, referred to as photoreforming, the photocatalyst is dropped onto the plastic, which is then immersed in an alkaline solution. With the help of irradiation using sunlight, the water from solution is reduced to hydrogen and the plastic is simultaneously oxidized to tiny organic molecules.

-China announces 10% tariff on US paraxylene in retaliation, but impact likely limited

China’s Ministry of Commerce Tuesday evening announced in a statement that Beijing would be imposing retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion worth of US imports, including a 10% tariff on US-origin paraxylene.

Initial feedback from market participants suggests that the impact of the tariffs on the Chinese polyester industry will likely be limited. The US accounted for around 8% of the world’s total PX production in 2017, and is not a major exporter of PX to China, industry sources said.

“The current import [volume] from the US to China is small, with South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East accounting for most of the PX imported last year. US exports to Asia can go to other countries, such as Taiwan, which in turn will displace some Asian-origin cargoes to China,” a Chinese end-user said Tuesday.

-Just How Low Can Iran’s Oil Exports Go?

Iran’s oil exports started to fall noticeably in August as key customers in Asia began to curtail oil purchases to either comply with the U.S. efforts to bring Iranian exports to zero, or to win waivers with the U.S. Administration.

Iran’s crude oil and condensate sales fell in August to below 2 million bpd—the lowest level in more than a year, according to tanker tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

In September, the trend of reduced Iranian oil exports has continued, and analysts expect further cuts from some of Iran’s oil customers.

-Opec’s problems aren’t over yet! Here’s a new one that the cartel is facing

Exporters’ group has navigated both supply and demand crises

A global recession, both $140 and $30 oil, the US shale revolution, a market-share war, and output cuts. Opec’s 60-year history has rarely confronted a more challenging period than the past decade.

Now, instead of enjoying the higher prices resulting from 18 months of joint production cuts with a coalition of other major producers, the cartel faces new problems. A tweet-happy American president is ramping up geopolitical risk, renewed sanctions are hammering Iran’s exports, Venezuelan production is tanking as its economy collapses, and a political attack from Washington in the form of the NOpec bill.

-Swiss consumption of bottled water rises significantly

Before the 1970s, few in Switzerland drank water from anywhere other than kitchen taps or fountains. By 1998, 680 million litres of bottled water a year were consumed. Now the figure is an eye watering 977 million litres, 115 litres per person every year. That is equivalent to nearly 350 small single-use plastic bottles per person per year.

In addition, Switzerland has some of the best drinking water in the world. Some communes get their water from mountain springs, making it better than bottled water – it’s from a similar source but fresher.

-Impossible recycling in the real world   Recycling polyethylene terephthalate PET bottles

In the Netherlands, one recycling plant is doing what many in the industry have labelled “impossible”, by recycling household packaging and making a financial success of it. EURACTIV went north of the Belgian-Dutch border to see the operation in action.

At a recycling facility in the town of Geleen, north of Liège and Maastricht, sorting machines, washers and industrial melters run around the clock every day of the year to convert problematic plastic waste into something useful.

-Small traders’ revenue drops as shoppers avoid plastic packaging

As scrutiny increases on plastics use across all industries, new research* from Paymentsense reveals over half (54%) of small retailers have seen sales of plastic packaged goods fall over the last six months.

The research shows that sales of fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic are most commonly highlighted as down, closely followed by fruit juice and water in plastic bottles. It also underlines how shoppers purchasing habits are evolving, in light of months of mainstream media attention on the subject.

Almost half (49%) of the small retailers surveyed said the number of customers requesting products without packaging has increased over the last six months. Over a third (36%) reported that consumers are now buying more unwrapped goods and using their own bags or containers to transport them. Nearly a quarter (23%) said they had seen a growth in customers requesting products with plastic-free packaging.
