-Graphene applications: what is graphene used for?

Graphene is a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb-like pattern. Graphene is considered to be the world’s thinnest, strongest and most conductive material – to both electricity and heat. All this properties are exciting researchers and businesses around the world – as graphene has the potential the revolutionize entire industries – in the fields of electricity, conductivity, energy generation, batteries, sensors and more.

Mechanical strength

Graphene is the world’s strongest material, and so can be used to enhance the strength of other materials. Dozens of researches have demonstrated that adding even a trade amount of graphene to plastics, metals or other materials can make these materials much stronger – or lighter (as you can use less amount of material to achieve the same strength).

-Germany’s first mineral water bottle from 100% recycled plastics

Social enterprise brand share is the first manufacturer in Germany to offer its mineral water made from bottles made from 100% recycled plastics.

At the beginning of this year, the company launched the mineral water bottle on the shelves of retailers dm and REWE. According to studies, Germans produce 37 kilograms of plastic waste per person per year, a figure that is set to grow even further. Even in a country with a strong recycling culture as Germany, half of plastics waste is burnt rather than being transformed into a new raw material, which makes using recycled plastics even more crucial.

-eurolaser to present laser system at Heimtextil

eurolaser, one of the leading suppliers of cutting solutions, offering processing tables up to 3.20 meters in width and length, as well as additional modules for multicolour direct printing, labelling and engraving for parallel use, will demonstrate its eurolaser L-1200 Conveyor laser system at this year’s Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt.

“By processing the textiles with the laser tool, the cutting edges are sealed and thus prevents fraying. Compared to knife processing, there is no tool wear and the material can be cut without distortion in all directions. The precise roll feed via the feeding unit and the tension-free transport via the conveyor table, which was specially developed for textile processing, ensure maximum result reliability,” the company explains.

-An answer to pet recycling challenges

At the PETnology conference in Paris, EREMA presented its newly developed VACUNITE technology. The Austrian producer of plastics recycling machines brings together its VACUREMA® bottle-to-bottle process with newly patented, vacuum-supported solid state polycondensation (SSP) from Polymetrix in this innovation.

All thermal process steps take place in nitrogen atmosphere. The result is rPET pellets which offer high quality and far exceed all food-contact requirements.

With VACUNITE EREMA expands its portfolio for PET recycling solutions. This technology is the answer to the challenges which PET recycling will have to face in the future. Christoph Wöss, EREMA Business Development Manager for the bottle sector, sums up these challenges as follows: “The growing commitment in society to handling plastics in a responsible way means that both political requirements and voluntary pledges of major beverage brands call for a significant increase in the amount of recyclate in end products.
