-Price quotations for PET in Asia rose after an increase in raw material prices

The price proposals of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in the Asian market have risen sharply last week amid an increase in raw material prices, ICIS reported.

Spot prices in the region were in the range of USD1 020-1 050 per ton, FOB China, and USD1 100-1 130 per ton, FOB India, in the week ending November 30.

Prices for Chinese PET were the most competitive in Asia compared to other volumes of material from Asian countries.

The price quotations for Chinese PET went up last week for both domestic and export markets after the growth of domestic raw material prices in China for purified terephthalic acid (TPA) from 6,110-6,170 yuan (CNY) or USD887-896 per ton, ex-warehouse (ex warehouse), November 30, up to the mark in CNY6 537-6 620 per ton, ex-warehouse, December 6.

Price quotations for Chinese PET were voiced last week at USD1,100 per tonne, FOB China, and higher.

-Biggest Negative Risk for Oil Price

That’s according to Bjorn Tonhaugen, head of oil market research at Rystad Energy, who told Rigzone that the OPEC+ decision will help the price stabilize and partially recover during 2019 but will “not likely bring oil back up to $75-$80 levels anytime soon due to the growth in U.S. shale”.

“Oil prices reacted positively initially because the market, based on the news flow before the decision, priced in a probability of a smaller cut … also there was a risk of no-deal,” Tonhaugen told Rigzone.

“Therefore, the market reacted positively initially but that may fade first before prices recover somewhat,” he added.

-Europe chemicals 2019 sales growth could be weakest since 2015 – UBS

Weakening automotive industry production, softer construction markets and a decline in oil pricing could lead in 2019 to the weakest revenue growth for European chemicals since 2015, according to analysts at investment bank UBS.

Average organic sales for the sector could be closer to the 3% contraction recorded in 2015 than the flat growth the bank had previously guided for, following Germany-based chemicals producer BASF’s downgrade to its 2018 earnings outlook last week.

UBS also said the strongest commodity chemicals supply growth since 2015 next year, potentially 50% above 2015 levels, increasing pricing risk at a time when the Chinese government looks set to dramatically expand its domestic emissions reduction programme and reduce basic chemicals demand.

-U.S. expected to end 2018 as world’s top oil producer: EIA

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. crude oil output growth was expected to slow slightly for this year compared with previous forecasts, the Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday, but at a record 10.88 million barrels per day, the nation will end 2018 as the world’s top producer.

Output this year was forecast to rise 1.53 million bpd to 10.88 million bpd, down from the EIA’s previous estimate of an increase of 1.55 million bpd. The current all-time U.S. annual output peak was in 1970 at 9.6 million bpd, according to federal energy data.

-Weekly resin report: ‘Twas the start of December, and not a buyer was stirring

The beginning of December marked the slowest resin trading week of the year, reports the PlasticsExchange (Chicago) in its Market Update.

Activity picked up mid-week, but only slightly, with ho-hum daily volumes amid limited spot demand.

Processors are de-stocking, which is both seasonal as the year-end approaches but also a result of lofty resin prices that are now coming un-done.

Offers for both polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) flowed freely and domestic railcars were well discounted, as burdensome upstream resin supplies weighed on the market.

PE prices shed another cent, while PP chunked off $0.02 to 0.03/lb. Contract prices for both PE and PP decreased in November and seem to be headed for similar declines in December.
