-PC prices in Europe continue to fall

Polycarbonate (PC) prices in Europe continue to fall in November amid weak demand, according to ICIS .

Thus, the November contract price of extrusion PC was at the level of EUR2 340-2 540 per ton, FD NWE (North-West Europe), having decreased from the level of the previous month EUR2 640-2 940 per ton, FD NWE.

The significant fall in prices is due to weak demand, wide availability and moods suggesting that prices were previously too high

-PetroChina Jilin Petchem lowers November prices of ACN in China for CNY1600 per ton

PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical, a subsidiary of the Chinese petrochemical giant PetroChina, on November 22 lowered the price offers of acrylonitrile (ACN) by 1,500 yuan (CNY) or USD216.5 per ton from the previous level, reported ICIS source in the company.

Thus, the November price proposals for the company’s material in China are now at the level of CNY13,000 or USD1,876 per tonne, DEL province of Shandong.

The demand from the acrylic yarns market is consistently decreasing, which leads to a sharp drop in spot prices.

PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical operates four AKN plants in Jilin Province (Jilin province, China) with a total capacity of 452 thousand tons per year.

-Polypropylene (PP) prices witness a sharp drop in Asia

This week, polypropylene prices drifted sharply lower in Asia. The steep price drop was mainly on account of persistent bearish buying interest in the region, a plunge in upstream propylene values coupled with a plunge in PP futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange in China further supported the price drop.

CFR Far East Asia, PP raffia and PP injection prices were assessed lower at the USD 1135/mt levels, both tumble USD 40/mt from the previous week. PP film prices were at the USD 1160/mt levels, a sharp week on week drop of USD 40/mt. PP block copolymer prices were assessed at the USD 1200/mt levels, a steep fall of USD 40/mt on the week. BOPP prices were at the USD 1160/mt levels, a drop of USD 40/mt from the previous week

-Graphene encounters bump in the road

A study in Advanced Materials applied a newly developed protocol to test the quality of graphene.

It was put to use to test worldwide graphene quality, which was found to be poor, possibly damping the success story that is graphene.

Graphene purchased from 60 producers around the world was studied by employing a systematic and reliable protocol that the authors developed.

The quality was investigated using five different analytical tools: optical microscopy to identify flake size; atomic force microscopy to measure the thickness of graphene stacks; Raman spectroscopy which provides information on the structural integrity of the sample as well as indication of presence of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to measure carbon content (i.e. establish the graphene’s purity); and scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to further characterize sample morphology.

-Supporting the Circular Economy with Compostable Packaging Solutions

To align the industry’s drive for higher performance with the increasing customer demand for sustainable solutions, the market needs to consider different packaging concepts and materials for laminates and hot drinks products.

Plastics derived from renewable biomass (plant material), such as PBS, are rising to the challenge – write Fabien Resweber (PTTMCC Biochem) and Lawrence Theunissen (Reverdia)

The highest priority should be to reduce, re-use or recycle packaging materials. In specific cases where recycling is not technically or economically possible, solutions are being developed based on compostable materials, including paper, cardboard and also compostable plastics.

While PLA is probably the most widely known compostable plastic, other materials like PBS (poly-butylene-succinate) and PBS-copolyesters are being increasingly used.

-JP Morgan Cuts Its Oil Price Outlook For 2019

JP Morgan has revising its outlook on Brent crude to US$73 per barrel on average, CNBC reports. The bank’s earlier forecast was for an average Brent crude price of US$83.50 a barrel.

The head of the bank’s Asia-Pacific oil and gas operations, Scott Darling, told CONB analysts had factored in the increase in supply in North America that will occur in the second half of 2019 and will eventually pressure prices even lower in 2020, to an average US$64 in that year.

-Iran Not Exiting Nuclear Deal Despite Setback On EU Oil Trade Mechanism

Iran is not preparing to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Wednesday, dismissing interpretations of comments from an Iranian official earlier this week.

On Monday, Iran’s deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi was quoted as saying that “If Europeans give in [to US pressures] they will call into question their sovereignty, credibility, and security,” referring to the European Union (EU) efforts to create a payment mechanism to keep trade with Iran, including oil trade

-Southeast Asia PP falls on steep propylene losses, ample supply

Southeast Asia’s polypropylene (PP) market is being dragged down by steep losses in feedstock propylene market since late October, amid ample supply and weak regional downstream demand.

Softening prices in the key China market further eroded market confidence in the region, with fresh volumes from South Korea inundating the Chinese import market.

On 16 November, spot PP flat yarn grade prices have fallen by 4.71% since late October to an average of $1,215/tonne CFR (cost & freight) SE Asia, according to ICIS data.

Market sentiment was battered as feedstock propylene prices plummeted.

Propylene prices have gone from the highest in the year to the lowest in the span of just five weeks, stunning downstream PP market players.

Some PP suppliers cut offers in a bid to offload more cargoes amid concerns that spot prices would come under pressure and take the cue from the propylene market.

-All quiet on the resin front, except for PET

North American commodity resin prices were surprisingly quiet in October, with only PET bottle resin showing any movement.

Time will tell if this was the calm before a pricing storm.

Regional PET bottle resin prices declined by an average of 1 cent per pound for the month, ending a streak of two consecutive monthly price hikes. Prices had jumped 6 cents per pound in September after a 2-cent hike in August.

Market watchers cited improving supplies of purified terephthalic acid and other raw materials as reasons for the October decline.

Sources added that buyers may see more price declines for PET in November. Demand for bottle resin typically declines in the fall and winter months, the result of declining sales of bottled water and carbonated soft drinks.

-Nigeria becomes Africa’s weakest PE, PP market on limited foreign currency

Multiple west African polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) markets are struggling with a lack of foreign currency, and Nigeria has turned out to be the most affected.

Polymers demand could be healthier in these markets, sources said, but buyers are not being able to provide payments, with many now owing back payments on previous orders.

Nigeria is suffering from high stock levels, as well as low buying appetite.

“Nigeria is a catastrophe,” said a trader.

“For many people, it is the worst for many years.”

The situation will improve for Ghana and Ivory Coast following the sale of their cocoa harvests in December, which bring in large quantities of foreign currency.

-EU October commercial vehicles registrations up 7% after September’s dip – ACEA

EU commercial vehicle registrations rose month on month in October, up 6.9%, according to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) on Thursday.

The return to positive figures will be welcomed by players in the chemical-intensive automotive industry, following September’s decline of more than 5% in the wake of the introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test (WLTP), a new testing system for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

In September, registrations of light commercial vehicles had fallen 6%.

However, registrations for that type of vehicle rose by 6% in October, bringing registrations back to the levels posted before the introduction of the WLTP.

All other vehicle segments recorded positive performances, while four of the five major European economies posted growth, with Italy (-13.2%) the only market posting a decline.
