-Feature: UK plastic packaging tax proposal receives mixed reception

PET best placed to take share of other polymers

Market participants have met the UK Government’s new plans to tax plastic packaging with a mix of concern and optimism, while questioning whether the planned tax will be effective.

The announcement in the government’s 2018 Autumn Budget last month of a tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content has promised to “reduce the problem of excessive and environmentally harmful plastic packaging.”

Some market participants believe the introduction of the tax in 2022 — which has yet to go through a consultation period — will give further impetus to a “plastic pact” that many in the plastic bottling industry have already signed up to.

-A Line in the Sand: Inside the Global Commitment to Circular Plastics

Following the announcement that over 250 major stakeholders have signed up to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s groundbreaking pledge, Tim Sykes spoke to Sander Defruyt (lead, New Plastics Economy initiative) about the vision and its practical implications.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) introduced the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in Bali on 29-30 October at the Our Oceans conference, establishing a new benchmark in the drive for a circularity in polymers.

-NUS researchers offer solution in fight against fake graphene

A lack of quality control in the graphene market has led to inferior products being touted as high-grade, so now an NUS research team has developed a reliable way to test graphene quality

Ever since the isolation of graphene was first achieved in 2004, there has been an explosion in graphene-related research and development, with hundreds of business opportunists producing graphene to capitalise on this rapidly expanding industry.

However, a new study by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has uncovered a major problem – a lack of production standards has led to many cases of poor quality graphene from suppliers.

Such practices can impede the progress of research that depend fundamentally on the use of high-quality graphene.

This is the third of a three-part series that examines our growing understanding of the scope and impacts of microplastics pollution.

At several locations around London last winter and spring, researchers stalked the streets counting the number of discarded plastic water bottles they encountered, as if tallying species across a coral reef.

-Creating a Circular Economy for Plastics

This is the third in a six-part series that explores five focus areas for businesses to address in plastic strategies, accelerate change and pursue the necessary scale of innovation and collaboration to address the plastics challenge. You can read the second blog in this series here.

Our current system is failing to capture the economic benefits of plastics. According to Helen Jordan from the British Plastics Foundation, “we need to stop thinking of plastic as ‘waste,’ but as a renewable resource that needs to be disposed of correctly.”

Society needs to stop thinking of plastic as ‘waste,’ but as a renewable resource that needs to be disposed of correctly.

-Bakken Oil Prices May Drop Further On Capacity Constraints

It’s not only the Permian that is suffering pipeline capacity constraints while oil production is soaring—production in the Bakken in North Dakota has been steadily rising to records while takeaway capacity dwindles, and crude-by-rail offers few options during the coming cold winter months.

Crude oil prices in the Bakken, which have already weakened over the past month with a lot of U.S. refineries out for maintenance, could further slip going forward because production continues to rise while the crude could freeze on the crude-by-rail in cold winters, executives and analysts tell Reuters.

-EU mulls imposing tariffs on Cambodian garments

The European Union (EU) is mulling over imposing tariffs on Cambodian garments.

As Cambodia has failed to respect the democratic and humanitarian principles of the UN charter, the EU’s Lisbon Treaty and the conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on workers’ rights, European Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom sent a warning to Cambodia last month.
