-What is graphene?

Stronger than steel, thinner than paper, graphene could be the future of tech

It’s always risky to make broad assertions about history, but one of the few things that seems to hold true is that technological advances drive the course of civilization.

Bronze and iron were so crucial to the spread of ancient societies that they have entire epochs named after them.

With the rise of the American steel industry, railroad tracks spread from Atlantic to Pacific, metal veins that carried the blood of a nation.

Silicon semiconductors enabled the growth of computers and the greatest surge in information technology since the printing press.

These materials shaped the development of society, and helped determine which countries dominated international relations.

-Split-A-Part Design Makes Plastics Shredders Easier, Safer to Maintain

When a plastics shredder needs maintenance or cleaning, conventional machine designs require climbing into the feed hopper, which is time consuming and potentially dangerous. This Split-A-Part design literally splits apart, making it easier, safer, and hassle-free.

Sooner or later a shredder is going to need maintenance, and it may more frequently require cleanout, particularly if you need to separate different scrap materials from one another. With a conventional machine design, that literally means climbing into the feed hopper to accomplish these tasks, which is time consuming and potentially dangerous.

-Recycling Technologies to expand plastic recycling capacity with new facility  Recycling Technologies plastic recycling

Plastic waste reprocessor Recycling Technologies has formally opened its new facility in Swindon, which it says will triple Europe’s waste plastic recycling capacity.

The company’s RT7000 machine uses chemical recycling processes to turn various forms of plastic waste – including difficult-to-recycle black plastic, films, crisp packets and food pouches – into a crude oil equivalent called Plaxx, which can then be used to create new plastic products.Recycling Technologies plastic recycling

The new 25,000 square foot facility in Stirling Court, Swindon, will enable Recycling Technologies to upscale the manufacture of its RT7000 machines for use in recycling centres across the UK and internationally.

-The Russian economy fell by 6% due to sanctions

Due to the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union since 2014, the Russian economy is now 6% less than it could have been without restrictive measures, Vedomosti reported, citing a Bloomberg study.

The slower growth rate confirms that the sanctions have a long-term negative effect on the Russian economy, economists emphasize

-How to Stop Using So Much Disposable Plastic

We are drowning the world in plastic. It washes onto our beaches, it sits entombed for centuries in landfills, it floats around the ocean in a cloud of microscopic particles twice the size of Texas.

Most of it—75% in the U.S.—never gets recycled.

Recycling it still takes 10% of the energy of making new plastic—not nothing. It would be nice to use a little less in the first place.

-Plastics – global enemy number one

Once our flexible friend, plastic is now global public enemy number one.

We are told we must cut back on its use in every area of our lives if we are to save the oceans, and that includes in the workplace.

Hartley Milner reports on how SMEs can strike a powerful blow in the fight against plastic pollution.

Who could forget those pitiful scenes flashed across our TV screens showing seals, turtles and seabirds entangled in rafts of deadly plastic waste?

The footage from the BBC’s Blue Planet II series caused a public outcry worldwide with governments pledging urgent action to clean up our oceans.

-Asia petrochemicals outlook, w/c Nov 19

Singapore — Supply of propylene, benzene and styrene monomer was expected to remain ample in the Asian petrochemical market this week, while the US-China trade tensions continues to cast a pall over high density polyethylene as orders for toys, plastic bags and packaging material are canceled.

OLEFINS

The Asian butadiene market was expected to find direction this week as buyers hunted for suitable fixed prices. This follows mixed signals last week when buyers hung back from procuring amid a weaker acrylonitrile butadiene styrene market and upstream crude oil prices tumbling, which hindered some buyers from settling trades despite the demand seen for December laycan cargoes.

-EMEA petrochemicals outlook, w/c Nov 19

The European ethylene market is expected to lengthen further this week as crackers restart after maintenance while demand from downstream polymer producers remains subdued.

POLYMERS

The polyethylene market has tightened, particularly for low density PE grades as low Rhine levels limit shipping. A return of PET plants in Europe following maintenance could help lengthen supply in Europe at a time of low seasonal demand.

The European paraxylene CP initially settled Eur77.50/mt lower month on month and has put pressure on both spot and FD contract PET prices in Europe. Participants have said they expect PET prices to fall further this week.

-Opinion: Are expected changes to plastic packaging realistic?

Neil Shackleton, the founder of packaging consultancy Medoola, explores the headline-generating expectations of plastic packaging and if they are realistic changes that the food and beverage industry can implement for the benefit of everyone concerned.

At the start of 2018, packaging made the front page. Driven by stark images from the world of our own wastefulness, packaging was singled out, front and centre for all to see. What has followed ever since has been quite astounding.
