-Hammond opts for plastic packaging tax

Chancellor Philip Hammond is to impose a tax on plastic packaging with insufficient recycled content.

In his Budget speech he stopped short though of introducing a tax on disposable plastic drinks cups, but signalled the possibility of an incineration tax in future.

The chancellor (pictured) said: “There will be a new tax on the manufacture and import of plastic packaging which has less than 30% recycled plastic content.”

He is to consult on the scheme’s detail and timetable and said he had acted because the UK should: “Lead work to rid oceans and environment of plastic waste.”

-Pepsi parent company pledges to increase use of recycled plastic

The goal calls for 25 percent recycled plastic in packaging by 2025

PepsiCo has announced a new goal to reduce its use of plastic packaging and increase its use of recycled plastic.

The food and beverage manufacturer said it aims to use 25 percent recycled content in its plastic packaging by 2025. The pledge comes at a time when businesses are under increasing pressure to curb the use of plastic, which often ends up in the world’s oceans.

The company said it will collaborate with suppliers and partners and try to increase consumer education about curbing plastic pollution. It also said improved recycling infrastructure and regulatory reform are needed to achieve its goal.

Specifically, PepsiCo has a goal of using 33 percent recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) content in beverage bottles by 2025.

-SC Johnson and Plastic Bank to Open New Blockchain Rewards Recycling Centers in Indonesia

New-Blockchain-Rewards-Based-Recycling-Centers-Planned-for-Indonesia-Battling-Plastic-Pollution-Crisis

Plastic Bank has been slowly and steadily proving themselves as an eco-friendly platform, urging consumers to pick up plastic and recycle. In return, the participant is provided with digital asset rewards. They have already started their efforts in several areas, but their latest collaboration will involve SC Johnson, a United States manufacturer of household cleaning supplies.

SC Johnson owns many major brands in the grocery industry, like Glade, Ziploc, and Mr. Muscle. Every one of these brands tends to use a substantial amount of waste, and a recent study examined the effect that plastic pollution has on the ocean. The study revealed that over 55% of the waste that the ocean takes in come specifically from five Asian countries – China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

-How can holistic packaging design alleviate marine litter?

A new white paper distills scientific research on the effects of plastic on ocean ecosystems and recommends ways the packaging industry can help reduce the amount of marine litter.

A white paper released today by non-profit foundation Ocean Wise and PAC Packaging Consortium (PAC) addresses the issue of plastic pollution caused in marine environments by packaging litter.

The report, titled “Ocean Plastics: What the Packaging Industry Can Do,” notes that microplastics—bits of plastic smaller than 5 mm—pose a major hazard to aquatic life and recommends taking a more holistic approach to packaging design to help reduce the amount of plastic that makes its way into the ocean.

The white paper proposes that such elements as single-use and small-format packaging and lightweight 2D items like lids and caps be redesigned to discourage the separation of elements, so they’re recycled together.

Optimizing packaging would include re-evaluating the correct amount of packaging to avoid unnecessary waste.

Ensuring that packaging can be collected and reused is also key.

The paper is being released in conjunction with an on-site meeting today at Vancouver Aquarium, an Ocean Wise initiative, which is part of PAC’s Innovation Roadshow.

-Borealis to ‘more than quadruple’ its plastics recycling by 2025

Borealis has committed to increasing its recycled plastics volumes by more than fourfold by 2025, as part of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which the Austrian polymers and fertilizers major signed on Monday.

Plastics recyclingThe commitment, titled ‘A Line In The Sand’, is an initiative driven by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation with the aim of creating a new normal for plastic packaging.

So far, it has been signed by over 250 organisations, including companies that collectively represent 20% of all plastic packaging produced globally.

Targets of the initiative also include:

– Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuse packaging models.

– Innovate to ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled, or composted by 2025.

-Reifenhäuser Cast Sheet Coating is introducing a new generation of PET thermoforming sheet lines

Following the big success of the 2013-release high-performance extrusion lines for PET thermoforming sheets with the patented mechatronic polishing stacks of the MIREX-MT-V design series, the next generation of this line type was presented this year.

As in the past, the heart of these lines is the tried-and-tested synchronous “REItruder” twin-screw extruders, which are now in their third generation.

In combination with dry-running high-performance vacuum pumps that work with an operating pressure of 5 mbar, and the degassing units on the REItruder that have continuously been optimized through the years, the systems meet the FDA requirements (N.O.L for Recycled Plastics #209) for films that are made of 100% recycled PET and are in direct contact with food.

-EMEA petrochemical outlook, w/c Oct 29

The eagerly awaited European ethylene contract for November will settle this week.

OLEFINS

The ethylene market was expected to remain well supplied and pressure on prices was seen coming both from feedstock naphtha and downstream polyethylene. The November contract for propylene will also settle this week. Expectations in the market ranged from a rollover to a small fall. Propylene was expected to remain well supplied in the spot market as downstream demand has fallen on the back of downstream shutdowns. The butadiene market’s November contract price settled down Eur100/mt ($114/mt) to Eur1,075/mt last week, while the spot market also weakened on low demand from export markets and declining prices in Asia.

POLYMERS

The European PE market will keep its ears close to the ground for any US origin offers that may emerge. Imported cargoes, both from the US and the Middle East, were expected to keep the European PE prices under pressure. Competitively-prices PE from the US has already led to softening prices in African and Turkish markets, and some African market participants expected that trend to continue into November. Polypropylene prices have come under pressure and, with feedstock bearishness, that trend was expected to continue.
