-Saudi Arabia’s energy minister emerged from days of heated OPEC talks joking that he wasn’t an easy man to be friends with.

Yet, the deal Khalid Al-Falih hammered out to reduce production by 1.2 million barrels a day, which sent oil prices soaring on Friday, was based on Saudi Arabia shouldering the lion’s share of the cuts.

It also relied, to an unprecedented extent, on Russia to broker an agreement between the Saudis and their archrivals, Iran, and acknowledged implicitly that there’s little the kingdom could do to hurt surging U.S. oil shale without causing itself pain.

“Saudi economic self-interest trumps Trump,’’ said Mike Rothman, president of Cornerstone Analytics Ltd., a veteran of three decades of OPEC meetings.

-Opec yet to agree on final deal as Iran seeks exemptions

Iran appeared yesterday to be the main obstacle for an Opec deal to cut oil production as the group’s leader, Saudi Arabia, has yet to agree on exemptions for sanctions-hit Teheran, two Opec sources said.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) resumes discussions in Vienna during the day before heading into a meeting with non-Opec oil producers led by Russia.

On Thursday, Opec tentatively agreed to an oil output cut, but could not decide concrete parameters for reductions as it was waiting for a commitment from non-Opec heavyweight Russia, sources from the group said.

Yesterday, two Opec sources said Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival Iran, which came under fresh United States sanctions last month, was also holding up a final deal.

-City professor makes food-safe bioplastic with expiry date

ICT researcher Ramanand Jagtap develops catalyst that will decompose plastic within set time; experts hail invention as solution for our plastic problem.

The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, might just have the answer to not just the city’s but the world’s plastic problem. Prof Ramanand Jagtap from the institute has developed a chemical agent, which when moulded with plastic
material can later aid its biodegradation. While existing biodegradable plastics need a controlled environment for decomposition by microorganisms, the ICT’s innovation purportedly does not need pre-set conditions and starts degrading on its own after a given period of time.

-Oil prices rise on planned Opec cuts

Major oil producers have agreed to cut production by more than one million barrels per day in a bid to boost energy prices.

Opec members, as well as countries allied with the cartel led by Russia, announced the plans on Friday, sending the price of Brent crude up almost 5%.

The cuts are due to start in January and last six months.

The plans come as the industry is grappling with a roughly 30% slide in prices since October.

The fall has been spurred by forecasts for lower demand, as well as a surge of shale production in the US.

-Bioplastics may not be better for climate: Study

Bioplastics — often promoted as a climate-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics — may lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, according to a study.

The study from the University of Bonn in Germany suggests that shifting to plant-based plastics could have less positive effects than expected.

An increased consumption of bioplastics in the following years is likely to generate increased greenhouse gas emissions from cropland expansion on a global scale.

Plastics are usually made from petroleum, with the associated impacts in terms of fossil fuel depletion but also climate change.

-Crude set for biggest gain since 2016 as OPEC finalizes cut deal

Oil in New York jumped after OPEC and allied crude exporters surprised traders with a larger-than-expected output reduction.

Futures advanced more than 2 percent in New York and London on Friday. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and aligned nations will collectively curb production by 1.2 million barrels a day, 20 percent more than previously discussed.

“It’s been a volatile October and November, but this is a nice Christmas present into December,” said Chris Kettenmann, chief energy strategist at Macro Risk Advisors LLC. OPEC “stepped up and delivered this year and we should see volatility come in.”

-Blow Molding: Faster Mold Changes for PET ISBM Machine

A new quick-mold-change (QMC) system from SIPA of Italy for its ECS SP single-stage injection stretch-blow molding (ISBM) machines reportedly slashes changeover times by about 25%. New features also include added safety and user-friendliness.

These hybrid machines are suited to molding containers from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal-care products, and spirits, especially in sizes from 20 to 50 ml. They come with injection clamps of 55 and 88 tons.

The QMC system involves a new automated procedure for loading/unloading the preform core plates; this incorporates additional sensors to ensure that the mold-opening stroke is adjusted to the preform length.

Operations for assembling and disassembling the neck-ring plate have also been modified. A new, patent-pending system now allows the procedure to be carried out safely by one person instead of two.

$ 60 per barrel instead of 100 americans have tried (Akhbar Al-Khaleej)

With the approaching date of the signing of the law on introduction of US sanctions against Iran, the most important among which are the sanctions prohibiting Iran to export its oil (the volume is 1.5 million barrels per day), there were expectations that as a direct result of this move will be to increase prices due to lack of supply.

It was assumed that Washington will turn to Saudi Arabia to cover this deficit and contributed to maintaining stability in the oil market.

Saudi Arabia produces 10 million barrels per day with a reserve capacity of two million barrels, but fearing the delay in meeting the demand, many importing countries began to increase reserves.

Saudi fears are that some countries have stocks, put them on the market and then prices will fall.

-Glut vs Opec cuts – what’s next for oil?

The bear market for crude oil appears to be settling in for the short term, with both Brent crude and WTI benchmarks shedding percentage point after percentage point for 7 weeks.

Oil market conditions are once more out of balance, at least from the oil bulls’ point of view. On one side of the scale, US shale keeps ramping up production to record levels. On the other side of the scale, Opec supply cuts are losing weight as investors remain skeptical on whether the group can mitigate the resurgent oil glut amid signs the global economy is slowing down again.

As of November 25, crude oil’s bull run appears to have rear-ended the decelerating China juggernaut, and has come to a crashing halt. The market has moved rapidly from a peak to reversal to correction to bear territory, giving investors little time to think.

-OPEC, Russia Agree To Cut Oil Output

OPEC announced Friday that it will reduce overall production among its members by 800,000 barrels a day from October’s levels for six months, starting from January.

The statement may have been written on Thursday, the day of the OPEC meeting because didn’t specify the output cut by nonmembers, which include Russia. But reports put the non-member cuts at 400,000 barrels a day (with most of the cut falling to Russia) to bring the total reduction to 1.2 million barrels a day.

On Friday, January WTI crude rose 2.2% to settled at $5US2.61 a barrel, while February Brent crude finished at $61.67, up 2.7%. They were up 3.3% and 3.6% respectively for the week.
