A research team led by DGIST Professor Jong-Sung Yu’s team at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering has successfully developed a new catalyst synthesis method that can efficiently decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen using solar light.

It is expected that this method will facilitate hydrogen mass production due to higher efficiency than the existing photocatalyst method

-US ethane spot prices plunge amid market sell-off

US ethane spot prices plunged below 40 cents/gal on Thursday, down over 7 cents from Wednesday as the market sell-off hit the natural gas liquids (NGL) sector.

Ethane for October delivery was heard trading down to 35.00 cents/gal FOB (free on board) Mont Belvieu, Texas, in the morning before recovering to around 37.50 cents/gal by the afternoon, sources said.

-Global textile company Aquafil transforms Italian fishing nets into catwalk collections

Italy – Volunteer divers have collected more than 4 tonnes (4000 kg) of fishing nets and other objects from the waters off the coast of the Aeolian Islands, Italy, which will be sent to a recycling factory in Slovenia and transformed into sustainable textiles for fashion houses across the globe.

Sustainable textile manufacturer Aquafil will clean and process the nets, before combining them with other nylon waste materials and turning them into Econyl regenerated nylon, a recyclable material that has been used by labels such as Gucci, Richard Malone and Adidas.

PTT Global Chemical PLC (GC), together with TOC Glycol Co. Ltd (TOCGC), a subsidiary of GC Group, has signed joint venture (JV) agreements with Mitsui Chemicals Inc. (MCI) to cooperate in managing Siam Mitsui PTA Co. Ltd (SMPC), a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) producer, and Thai PET Resin Co. Ltd (TPRC), a polyethylene terephthalate resin (PET) producer.

-Japan’s Toray Industries to build R&D center in Seoul

The South Korean unit of Toray Industries Inc., a Japanese conglomerate specializing in industrial products, will build a research and development center in Seoul to identify new growth engines in its efforts to solidify its presence in the Korean market.

Korean subsidiaries of Toray Group including Toray Advanced Materials and Toray Chemical held a groundbreaking ceremony for the R&D center on Thursday in Magok industrial complex, west of Seoul.

Several multinationals operating in the soft drinks sector are targeted by authorities in several countries in East Africa.

It is the case of the American firm Coca-Cola, today forced to recycle in order to avoid legislation on plastic waste management.

In East Africa, much effort has been made in the management of plastic waste.

If thanks to its legislation and the rigour of the authorities, the city of Kigali in Rwanda has become the cleanest on the African continent, it is not uncommon to still see plastic bottles littering the streets of several cities in East Africa.

Europe is a leader for textile machinery. Before the flagship ITMA 2019, four Machinery Manufacturers Associations, AMEC of Spain, SYMATEX of Belgium, BTMA of Great Britain and UCMTF of France, have taken the initiative to organize a roadshow in Mexico. More than 18 manufacturers have joined. On the Mexican side, the initiative has also received a strong support from CANAINTEX and CITEX.

Then, a two day program has been set up. The European textile machinery manufacturers will welcome the Mexican textile and carpet manufacturers and present them their latest technical innovations and services in Mexico City (November 20) and Puebla (November 21).

The company believes with its upgraded motor design and a package of added features, the machine fills an important gap for the thin-wall packaging segment, described by the company’s UK MD Nigel Flowers as the twilight zone.

Available with clamping forces between 500 kN and 1,800 kN and with injection speeds between 350 and 500 mm/s, the machine has been specially built for extremely narrow tolerance applications requiring fast cycle times between 3 and 10 seconds.

Celanese Corporation , a global specialty materials company, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire India-based Next Polymers Ltd., one of the country’s largest domestic engineering thermoplastics (ETP) compounders.

Next Polymers specializes in custom compounding of various ETP materials and is headquartered in Mumbai, India, with an approximate 20 kilo tons per annum compounding production facility in Silvassa, located in the union territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

-Waitrose trials bio-based alternative to black plastic

Waitrose & Partners is set to trial innovative, fibre-based packaging across its range of Italian ready meals as part of the supermarket group’s commitment to eliminate black plastics from its own-brand products by 2019.

The new packaging carries a label encouraging customers to recycle it along with their paper waste

The firm, which operates more than 350 stores across the UK, will replace the black plastic trays currently used for three of its Italian ready meal products with the alternative material, which it claims is 100% FSC-certified and widely recyclable.

The cream-coloured trays will be used to house Waitrose & Partners’ macaroni cheese, spaghetti Bolognese and tuna pasta bake lines during the two-month trial, with consumers encouraged to rinse them and place them in their paper recycling bin after use.

-PepsiCo to launch range of 100% recycled plastic packaging by 2020

PepsiCo has this week unveiled plans to purchase 100% recycled plastic for some of its packaging lines by 2020, after the company was named by Greenpeace as one of the largest corporate plastic polluters in the world.

The US-based food and drink business has partnered with plastic innovation firm Loop to purchase a supply of recycled PET (rPET), which it claims it will incorporate into its packaging for the first time in early 2020.

-China Replaces Venezuelan Oil With Canadian Imports

Chinese refiners are buying more and more very cheap heavy Canadian crude oil to make up for the dwindling supply of Venezuela’s heavy grades as China’s road construction sector—a key consumer of the heavy oil’s bitumen yield—is booming.

China purchased 1.58 million barrels of heavy Canadian crude oil for loading in September, up by nearly 50 percent compared to the 1.05 million barrels it imported from Canada in April, Bloomberg quoted data by cargo-tracking and intelligence company Kpler on Thursday.

Analysts expect the Chinese purchases of heavy Canadian oil to continue to be high in October amid the typically peak construction season.

Oil industry titans are still not in agreement over what to expect from oil prices in the near future, with a wide array of guesses calling for both a spike in prices and a renewed downturn.

At the Oil & Money Conference in London, this disagreement was on display. Ian Taylor of Vitol, an energy trader, said that he expects oil prices to fall to $65 per barrel, while his counterpart at Trafigura said that triple-digit oil prices were likely before all was said and done.

Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, said that there would have be to new checks on goods going between Great Britain and Northern Ireland under the plans being drawn up for an Irish backstop.

The backstop is the plan designed to avoid a hard border in Ireland, if the final Brexit outcome does not achieve that. Barnier said that when the UK left the EU, there would have to be new checks on goods going between the two areas.
