The heads of the world’s top oil trading houses are unanimous that Iranian sanctions will remove a large chunk of oil from the market, more than initially expected, but they have very diverging opinions on where oil prices are headed for the rest of the year and in 2019.

At the Oil & Money conference in London this week, the top executives of Vitol, Trafigura, Gunvor, and Glencore predicted the price of oil next year at between $65 and $100 a barrel due to a combination of many other factors apart from the U.S. sanctions on Iran—highlighting the uncertainty in the oil market about where prices are heading.

-Scientists investigate how plastics can be recycled together

Different plastics could soon be thrown in the same recycling bin without needing to be separated, scientists say.  Plastic milk bottles are made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) whereas margarine tubs are made from polypropylene. These two plastics cannot currently be recycled together so have to be separated by households or at the recycling centre.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

This process can mean that plastic ends up in landfill because the batch becomes accidentally contaminated with several types of the material.

-New OffColor detection solution put to the test

The utilisation of the new OffColor detection for polyester yarns by Loepfe has been extensively tested in the PT.

Superbtex spinning mill in Indonesia. Thanks to the new OffColor detection feature of Loepfe´s YarnMaster ZENIT+, the labour-intensive and therefore expensive visual inspection of the bobbins is no longer necessary, according to the manufacturer.

The raw material for spinning synthetic fibres originates from well-controlled processes in chemical plants.

This is why contamination with foreign matter occur very rarely.

However, synthetic yarns like polyester can have different fibre qualities with different glossiness. Mixed-up yarns can lead to defects in the following processes along the production chain.

-French single-use plastics ban violates EU law on free circulation of goods, says Petcore Europe

EU flagsIt seems that too many laws are creating conflict and confusion among countries in the European Union.

Petcore Europe and PET Sheet Europe, both based in Brussels, released information on a modification to French agricultural law, which was approved on Sept. 14, 2018, by the Assemblée Nationale and Senate that prohibits the availability of plastic containers and disposables for catering to schools, universities and nurseries.

It appears that move has resulted in France jumping ahead of European law, a non-non according to the associations.

Despite current discussions in Europe affecting the end-of-life disposal of some of the same items targeted in France, the European Union has not yet adopted any restrictive measures against single-use plastic packaging and food containers.

-New US tariffs on China would include many petrochemicals

The Trump administration’s latest round of proposed tariffs on Chinese goods includes a long string of petrochemicals, both raw materials and items made from plastic resins.

The list of $200 billion in Chinese goods disclosed this week would be subject to a 10% tariff if implemented amid growing trade tensions between the US and China.

Last Friday, the US implemented $34 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, and China retaliated with the same value of taxes on US imports, largely agricultural crops and automobiles.

The US is slated to impose another $16 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods late next week, and China has said it will retaliate in kind — a second list of the same value that includes crude oil and gasoline as well as two plastic resins, polyvinyl chloride and low-density polyethylene, used to make items like vinyl flooring and plastic tubs, respectively.
