It’s no secret that plastic is both overused and abused. According to Plastic Oceans, the world is now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use. Even more startling, more than eight million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year.

-Don’t Underestimate The Trade War Impact On Oil Demand
A squeeze on oil demand is looming as a result of the U.S.-China trade war, a senior BP executive told Reuters. Acknowledging the bullish effect of U.S. sanctions on Iran in the short term, Janet Kong, BP’s chief executive of oil trading operations in Asia, said this effect will be short-lived as the market absorbs the shock and moves on to other concerns.
-Asia naphtha jumps to four-month high on crude gains, market unfazed
Asia’s naphtha prices touched a four-month high at above $700/tonne in response to high crude oil futures, but a supply overhang will keep the market slightly bearish.
Open-spec naphtha prices for first-half November delivery stood at $705.50/tonne CFR (cost and freight) Japan at early hours session, climbing from $695.25/tonne CFR in the previous day.
Spot prices were last seen at such levels above $700/tonne CFR Japan in mid-September, the data showed.
Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (MCI; Tokyo; www.mitsuichem.com) has decided to set up a new production facility for long glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (LGFPP) at the Ohio plant of its U.S. subsidiary Advanced Composites, Inc. (President: Keiji Shite).
-A synflow-equipped hot runner system. A 6-drop hot runner system will be demonstrated at Fakuma.
Synventive, a business unit of the U.S.-based Barnes Group, focuses its activities on process-oriented, stable plastics processing.
Among Synventive’s exhibits at Fakuma are its Plug ‘n’ Play hot runner systems and its latest Active Gate technologies for actively controlled melt flow.
The company says it focuses on the result of the injection moulder, namely, high-quality parts with demanding surface quality and optimum dimensional accuracy as well as high reproducibility.
-Oil pares gains as Trump repeats calls on OPEC to pump more
Oil prices rose on Tuesday but eased off a four-year high after U.S. President Donald Trump called on OPEC to increase crude output, even he as called for heavier sanctions on major oil producer Iran.
Trump reiterated calls on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to pump more oil and stop raising prices in a speech before the United Nations.
The so-called “OPEC+” group, which includes the likes of Russia, Oman and Kazakhstan, had met at the weekend to discuss a possible increase in crude output, but the upshot of the gathering was that the group was in no rush to do so.
-Sumitomo Chemical PES Additive Boosts Toughness of Epoxy Composites
Sumitomo Chemical reports that its polyethersulfone (PES) micro-powder additive SumikaExcel 5003P boosts fracture toughness and resistance to micro-cracking for fibre reinforced epoxy composites over a broad temperature range without negatively impacting dimensional stability, flame/smoke/toxicity (FST), creep resistance, modulus, impact, or yield strength.
The company says that functional additive is widely used by the aerospace industry for prepreg and resin transfer moulded carbon fibre reinforced epoxy, is gaining ground in automotive, and could also be used for high-performance sporting goods. The material is produced by Sumitomo Chemical, Tokyo, Japan, and sold in North America by Sumitomo Chemical Advanced Technologies, Phoenix, Arizona, US, which will exhibit for the first time at CAMX 2018, 16-18 October in Dallas.
-Crude oil imports may be cut as price forecast put at $100 a barrel
Benchmark Brent crude oil futures surged 2% on Monday to over $80 a barrel
With oil traders forecasting crude oil to rise to $100 a barrel by the end of the year, Indian refiners are considering cutting back their imports and relying more on cheaper crude already stored in inventories, according to industry executives.
Benchmark Brent crude oil futures surged 2 per cent on Monday to over $80 a barrel as markets have tightened ahead of the start of sanctions by the United States on Iran, with commodity merchants Trafigura and Mercuria predicting $100 oil by the end of 2018.
-Teijin to build advanced fiber-reinforced wood building
New building to incorporate structural timber product comprising a number of layers of dimensioned timber and high-performance fibers bonded with structural adhesives.
Teijin Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) announced Sept. 25 that it will construct the world’s first building made of advanced fiber-reinforced wood (AFRW), a structural timber product comprising a number of layers of dimensioned timber and high-performance fibers bonded together with structural adhesives. Teijin first developed the materials in 2015, which involved incorporating high-toughness aramid fibers and highly stiff carbon fiber, and hybrid materials incorporating these fibers.
-Dornbirn- GFC 57 focusses on new advances in fibre sector25
The 57th Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress (Dornbirn GFC), the European-led innovation platform for the fibre industry, which was held from September 12-14, 2018, in Austria, focussed on latest innovations in the fibre industry and its downstream stages. More than 700 participants from over 35 nations took part in the major platform for textile industry.
More than a 100 high qualitative international lectures from academy and industry highlighted the congress. Beside the presentations, the audience had the possibility to ask specific questions and, therefore, the topics were discussed in a practical way. Also this year, the share of lectures from the industry was about 50 per cent. Next to Europe, a lot of interesting lectures were presented from Japan, China, Taiwan, India, USA, Canada, and Turkey, according to a press release by Dornbirn.
– Novozymes Joins International Phytobiomes Alliance
The International Alliance for Phytobiomes Research is pleased to announce that Novozymes has joined the organization as a sponsoring partner.
Launched in 2016, the Phytobiomes Alliance is an international, nonprofit consortium of academic institutions, private companies, and government agencies. The Alliance facilitates and coordinates international efforts toward expanding phytobiomes research in order to accelerate the sustainable production of food, feed, and fiber for food security.
The term “Phytobiome” refers to a plant growing within a specific environment, or biome; it includes the plant itself, all micro- and macro-organisms living in, on, or around the plant—such as microbes, animals, insects, and other plants—as well as the environment, which includes soil, air, water, weather, and climate.
-Bioplastics sourced from wood
The shift from fossil-based industries to a bioeconomy is creating a growing demand for biobased chemicals, materials and fuels as sustainable and renewable alternatives. One possible source is fructose from wood for use in the production of bioplastics.
Lignocellulosic biomass is typically nonedible plant material, including dedicated crops of wood and grass, as well as waste material from agroforestry. It is also the single most abundant renewable resource on earth and available all year round. Furthermore, lignocellulosic biomass does not need valuable space in fields as it has no agricultural or nutritional use. It’s noteworthy, that wood can be harvested sustainably from certified forests. In the Nordic countries, more forest is grown than gets harvested each year.
Borealis has announced a new strategic alliance with Bockatech, a UK early stage Greentech and provider of EcoCore technology for sustainable packaging.
Borealis and Bockatech have partnered to combine Bockatech EcoCore technology with Borealis material grades to produce lightweight foam injection moulding solutions.
