An industry-first: BASF is expanding its Biopolymers portfolio by introducing biomass-balanced ecoflex® (PBAT)

  • New ecoflex® F Blend C1200 BMB has 60% lower Product Carbon Footprint than the standard ecoflex® grade
  • Fossil-based feedstocks are replaced with renewable alternatives from waste-based feedstocks and attributed to the product via certified biomass balance (BMB) approach
  • Drop-in solution: ecoflex® BMB has the same properties, performance, machine processability and biodegradation certificates as the standard ecoflex® grade
  • Biomass-balanced ecoflex® helps the packaging industry increase the use of renewable feedstock  Plastic recycling

BASF is now offering the packaging industry a way to increase the use of renewable feedstocks: It is expanding its portfolio of certified compostable biopolymers to include a biomass-balanced (BMB) ecoflex®, a polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) that is frequently used in the compounding of biopolymers. For the new ecoflex® F Blend C1200 BMB, the fossil raw materials that are usually used in the production process are replaced with renewable feedstock at the beginning of the value chain. The renewable feedstock comes from waste and residual biomass and is attributed to the ecoflex® grade via a mass balance approach which is certified according to REDcert2 and ISCC PLUS (1). The biomass-balanced ecoflex® not only contributes to reducing the use of fossil resources, but it also offers a 60% lower Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) (2) than the standard ecoflex® F Blend C1200.  Plastic recycling

Canon Inc. is revolutionizing the recycling industry with the debut of its TR Series plastic sorting equipment, featuring the TR-S1510

This cutting-edge technology utilizes Raman spectroscopy to accurately identify various types of plastics, including the traditionally challenging black plastic waste. The TR Series is designed to enhance the circular economy by boosting the efficiency of material recycling processes. Plastic recycling

The innovative tracking Raman spectroscopic method allows for high-speed sorting of plastics at a conveyor speed of 1.5 meters per second, processing up to 1 ton of plastic per hour. This technology shines a laser on the plastic pieces, gathering molecular data to determine the material composition, even for black plastics that do not reflect visible light well.

Canon’s entry into the recycling system market aims to increase the current 20% material recycling rate of daily plastic waste. The TR-S1510 promises to maintain purity levels in recycled plastics, crucial for materials like ABS and polypropylene (PP). By overcoming the limitations of near-infrared spectroscopy, Canon’s system can sort all colors of plastic with unprecedented precision, propelling productivity in recycling plants. The TR Series is not only a technological breakthrough but also a customizable solution, adaptable to various customer needs regarding throughput and installation space. Canon’s commitment to building a sustainable future is evident in this initiative to maximize material recycling and foster a circular economy.

Announces Asia Manufacturing and Availability of Cesa™ Non-PFAS Process Aid

Avient Corporation, a premier provider of specialized and sustainable materials solutions and services, is expanding the recent launch of its Cesa™ Non-PFAS Process Aid to Asia. This new solution is formulated without fluoropolymers, which may be classifiable as per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), for use in polyolefin extrusion and film applications without compromising performance or efficiency.  Plastic recycling

“Certain PFAS are widely used in various polymer formulations to deliver desirable properties such as durable resistance to heat, oil, stain, and water. However, environmental concerns about PFAS are growing as studies have indicated many PFAS break down very slowly over time and can persist in water and soil,” said Pal Shi, Asia Marketing Director, Color and Additives at Avient. “As a result, some countries are restricting PFAS, and there is growing pressure to ban all PFAS. This is causing processors to search for non-PFAS alternatives.

Our Cesa Non-PFAS Process Aid can help customers anticipate any regulatory changes, support sustainability goals, and maintain a competitive edge in important markets, such as flexible food and beverage packaging.” Plastic recycling

Lenzing, Exponent Envirotech apply waterless dye to cellulose fibres

Wood-based specialty fibre company Lenzing Group has partnered with technology start-up Exponent Envirotech on “scientific breakthrough” of adding recyclable non-aqueous solvent to wood-based cellulosic fibres.

Lenzing explained its TENCEL branded lyocell and modal fibres, and Lenzing ECOVERO branded viscose fibres are the first wood-based cellulosic fibres to be dyed using Exponent Envirotech’s ECOHUES waterless dyeing technology. Plastic recycling

Lenzing and Exponent Envirotech chose knitwear as the application to bring the results of the collaboration to life. The duo have joined forces with Hong Kong-based innovative knitwear manufacturer Cobalt Fashion to provide the industry with alternative yarn options that claim to be as colourful and functional as conventionally dyed yarns.

The key difference to the technology being that it is said to reduce water usage and dye usage respectively by 95% and 40% to mitigate the textile industry’s carbon footprint and environmental impact.

For this reason Lenzing believes the trio are bringing a “scientific breakthrough to the mainstream textile market”.  Plastic recycling

Why does Spain lead plastic recycling in the EU?

Spain is positioned as a benchmark in plastic waste management at the European level, holding the title of the country with the greatest plastic recycling capacity per capita. This achievement is the result of a convergence of factors that include sound public policies, a strong industrial sector and growing citizen awareness of the importance of sustainability.

A favorable regulatory framework:

The National Waste Plan (PNR) has been fundamental in promoting plastic recycling in Spain. By setting ambitious targets and creating a strong legal framework, the PNR has incentivized investment in recycling infrastructure and promoted the adoption of sustainable practices by businesses and consumers.  Plastic recycling

A robust industrial sector:

Spain has an extensive network of highly efficient and technologically advanced plastic recycling plants. These facilities process a large amount of plastic waste, turning it into valuable raw materials for the manufacture of new products.
