-Transparent wood is sustainable and suitable for structural use

Researchers from Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology have developed a transparent and sustainable wood. The material allows through natural light, can store thermal energy and – unlike other transparent woods – is intended for structural use.

Transparent wood was first introduced in 2016 as a potential structural material for buildings which – in addition to the other useful properties of wood – allows natural light to pass through.

Key to making wood into a transparent composite material is to strip out its lignin, the major-light absorbing component in wood which is essential for forming rigid cell walls. The empty pores left by the removal of lignin, however, need to be filled with a substance which restores the strength of wood and allows light to be transmitted through the material.

In previous iterations of their composite, the KTH researchers had used conventional petroleum-based polymers. Now, they have successfully developed and tested a sustainable alternative which uses limonene acrylate: a monomer made from limonene.

“The new limonene acrylate it is made from renewable citrus, such as peel waste that can be recycled from the orange juice industry,” said Céline Montanari, a PhD candidate and lead author of the study.

-Oxygen Permeation Analyzer for Bottles, Pods, and Other Whole Package Forms

Ametek Mocon’s  Ox-Tran 2/48 measures the oxygen transmission rate of whole packages at ambient conditions.  A new analytical instrument to measure the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of whole packages at ambient environmental conditions has been launched by Ametek Mocon. PlasticRecycling Resinprices Biopolyamide

Ox-Tran 2/48 analyzer targets package permeation testing in the food, beverage, and healthcare packaging application space, where knowing the precise rate of oxygen transmitting through a package at room temperature and room humidity conditions is critical to a product’s shelf life.

The Ox-Tran 2/48 offers high-capacity testing with eight cells. Four of the cells are for testing OTR and the other four are used for conditioning packages so that they spend less time in test. Applications include permeation testing of formed trays, bottles, flexible pouches, corks, caps, and pods.

-Total has increased the May prices of PS in the USA

Total Petrochemicals and Refining USA has raised polystyrene (PS) prices by 15 cents per pound (USD331 per tonne), the company said in a letter to customers.

The price increase came into effect on May 1 or in accordance with the terms of the contract. Polystyrene prices are under upward pressure due to rising raw material prices. May contract prices for US benzene rose USD1.59 a gallon in April, the highest since September 2014. PS contracts rose sharply in response to significant increases in spot prices in the previous month.

Polystyrene supplies remain limited as several US styrene producers only recently resumed production after prolonged shutdowns caused by a mid-February winter storm in the US Gulf of Mexico. PlasticRecycling Resinprices Biopolyamide

Demand remains robust as the US economy continues to demonstrate strong economic growth, primarily driven by increased demand for manufactured goods.

Earlier it was reported that the contract price of styrene monomer in Europe was finally agreed for May deliveries at the level of EUR1,950 per tonne, which is EUR87 per tonne higher than the level of the previous month.

-Parx Materials Develops Antimicrobial Polypropylene Nonwoven

Applications include medical masks, protective gowns, diapers and other sanitary

Antimicrobial additive start-up Parx Materials has successfully developed a new polypropylene (PP) nonwoven material that resists bacteria. The latest test results show that the material is effective against strains of E.coli, Staphylococcus and Candida Albicans, achieving a Class AAA rating for use in medical masks, protective gowns, diapers or other sanitary products. PlasticRecycling Resinprices Biopolyamide

The antimicrobial nonwoven material is made with polypropylene via the spunbond production method in which woven materials are manufactured in one continuous process. Using Parx Materials’ Saniconcentrate technology, the material prevents bacteria and viruses from surviving without toxic biocides or leaching.

-Recycled plastic bags make sustainable fabrics

Polyethylene is one of the most common plastics in the world, but it is seldom found in clothing because it cannot absorb or carry away water. (Imagine wearing a plastic bag – you would feel very uncomfortable very quickly.) Now, however, researchers in the US have developed a new material spun from polyethylene that not only “breathes” better than cotton, nylon or polyester, but also has a smaller ecological footprint due to the ease with which it can be manufactured, dyed, cleaned and used.

The textile industry produces about 62 million tons of fabric each year. In the process, it consumes huge quantities of water, generates millions of tonnes of waste and accounts for 5–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the world’s most polluting industries.PlasticRecycling Resinprices Biopolyamide

Later stages of the textile use cycle also contribute to the industry’s environmental impact. Textiles made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton, silk or linen require considerable amounts of energy and water to recycle, while textiles that are coloured or made of composite materials are hard to recycle at all.

-Boosting the recycling of PET bottles – which labels and sleeves should I use?

If you think the label is only a small part of a pack, then it might be time to think again. Choosing the right label or sleeve for PET bottles can make a huge difference in recycling, argues Marika Knorr, head of sustainability and communication at CCL Label, in our latest Innovation Spotlight. PlasticRecycling Resinprices Biopolyamide

Achieving a higher yield in quantity and quality of PET material is one of the challenges in PET recycling. How can you help?

Marika Knorr: Looking into how labels and sleeves can support the recycling of PET bottles and thus a circular economy has been a focus area for CCL Label for a while. We have two specially engineered products that perform ideally in PET recycling: Our Pressure Sensitive Label EcoStream and our new polyolefin Sleeve material EcoFloat.
