-Aquafil, revenues and profits up in the first half of 2018
Aquafil announced the results for the first half of 2018, a period closed with revenues of 291.29 million euro, an increase of 4.5% compared to 278.84 million obtained in the first six months of last year, mainly attributable to the BCF product due to the higher quantities sold in Asia Pacific, the polymers product area in the USA and higher sales prices.

-A transparent and thermally stable polyamide – 100  percent biobased

The natural substance 3-carene is a component of turpentine oil, a waste stream of the production of cellulose from wood. Up to now, this by-product has been incinerated for the most part. Fraunhofer researchers are using new catalytic processes to convert 3-carene into building blocks for biobased plastics. The new polyamides are not only transparent, but also have a high thermal stability.

-September contract price of ethylene in Europe remained at the level of August 

MOSCOW – The contract price of ethylene in Europe for September supplies was agreed at the level of EUR1,135 per tonne, which corresponds to the level of August, several sources of the market told ICIS on Thursday.

The contract price was approved on the basis of FD NWE (with delivery to North-Western Europe).

-VTT’s Plastic-Eating Microbes Could Help Solve Marine Plastic Problem

VTT — the Technical Research Centre of Finland — is helping to solve the global plastic waste problem with a project called PlastBug, a mobile container unit that removes plastic waste from ocean areas and converts it into material for other uses.

“Our idea is to design a mobile container where microbes degrade plastic waste to valuable products like fuels or chemicals,” says Kari Koivuranta, Principal Scientist at VTT.

ContiTech AG has expanded its footprint in China with the opening of a production plant for 3D blow mould hoses in the eastern city of Changshu.

The company announced 28 Aug that the RMB70m (€10m) production unit will supply hoses for high-performance turbochargers for automotive OEMs.

With 120t a month of black PET now being combined with mixed-colour PET bottle waste to create new recycled food packaging for three retailers, Faerch Plast UK emphasised the need for new recycling initiatives.

Viridor is sorting and combining the different waste types and Faerch Plast is extruding black PET sheet at its Ely plant, with recycled content starting at 30%.

The Greensboro, N.C.-headquartered company’s flagship brand is Repreve, a recycled polyester fiber. Unifi is a large U.S. consumer of recovered PET bottles. Its goal is to recycle the equivalent of of 20 billion PET bottles by 2020. It recently surpassed the 12 billion bottles mark.
