OUTLOOK ’19: Asia PX supply to lengthen on new capacities

Supply of paraxylene (PX) inAsia should gradually lengthen as a result ofPX capacity expansion growth, driven by twolarge production units coming on stream in thekey China market this year.

Hengli Group’s PXnew capacity would stand at around 4.5mtonnes/year, while Zhejiang PetrochemicalCorporation will be able to produce 4mtonnes/year of PX.

PX is a feedstock for purified terephthalicacid (PTA), which mainly goes into polyesterfibres and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Around 98% of PX is used for PTA or dimethylterephthalate (DMT) production.

China is the key PX demand hub globally, withthe country being net-short and heavily relianton imports.

Furthermore, global demand growth is mainlydriven by China, with China’s PTA productioncapacity standing at around 57% of total globalPTA production capacity.

Bethge installs new Monforts machines in record time

Bethges plant manager Frank Katzenstein. © MonfortsBethge AG Textilveredlung, a commission fabric finisher since 1834, based in Switzerland, has installed two new energy-saving six-chamber Montex stenters, as well as a Monfortex compressive shrinkage range, to replace the machinery damaged during the heavy storms that broke in July 2017. Particularly badly affected was the town of Zofingen in the canton of Aargau, where Bethge operates.

“It started with the hail, the most fierce hail storm I’ve ever seen, with stones as long as four centimetres. This was enough to close all of the local roads and then the rain started and just didn’t stop – and the flooding and landslides began,” recalled the company’s plant manager Frank Katzenstein.

U.S. crude starting to seep back to China, but needs lower price

U.S. crude oil is starting to trickle back to China with three cargoes slated to arrive next month, but volumes are still a long way off levels prior to the outbreak of trade hostilities between the world’s two largest economies.

Vessel-tracking data compiled by Refinitiv shows three tankers carrying 3.94 million barrels are en route from the United States to China and will arrive in February.

Prior to the tit-for-tat tariffs being imposed from the middle of last year, crude oil was a success story in the U.S.-China trade relationship as Beijing bought increasing volumes of booming U.S. shale oil production.

Asia petrochemicals outlook, w/c Jan 7

The Asian petrochemical markets were last week affected by a rebound in crude oil prices by 4.6% which saw some petrochemical market prices rise firmly as well. However, other markets remained quiet and sluggish in the wake of holidays and may only see an increase in activity in the week to follow.

The Asian butadiene market closed on firmer pricing last Friday, as concerns over supply issues and aggressively rising spot prices in China caused regional import indications to rise. Week on week, the CFR China marker rose $10/mt to $1,195/mt last Friday following domestic price increases in the wake of production issues.

Asia’s ethylene market would likely remain bearish this week after a week-on-week fall of $60/mt to $870/mt CFR Northeast Asia last Friday, pressured by ample supplies in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

U.S. Eagle Ford oil growth to stall in 2019 amid weak prices

Drillers in the Eagle Ford, Texas’s other shale oil patch, will likely scale back activity in 2019 as lower crude prices eat into cash flows.

Production has already started slowing. Supplies this month are expected to average below 1.3 MMbod for the first time since May, according to consulting firm Rystad Energy AS. If West Texas Intermediate crude prices stay under $50/bbl, output could fall as low as 1.2 MMbbl by year-end, said Artem Abramov, Rystad’s V.P. of shale analysis. That’s 12% below the two-year high reached in October.
