A recycling facility is to be opened by Indorama Ventures in Guadalajara, Mexico later this year, which is designed to process very dirty consumer landfill-collected bottles.

The plant will process more than 100 million pounds (45,359 tonnes) of plastics bottles annually into clean PET flakes to produce FuTuRe-PET. Italy’s Amut Group is supplying a washing line capable of reaching 4,000kg/h. It features a wet-cold-cleaning technology in the de-labeller unit, which removes labels (especially full-body shrink sleeves).

Amut also increased the friction force of its turbo and friction washer machines, in order to remove not only fine pollutants, labels and glue, but even soil. Pre-washing and de-labelling phases are carried out in a cold water process while the turbo and friction washer have hot water flow.

Bayport Polymers (Baystar) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for its new 625,000 tonne/year Borstar polyethylene (PE) unit in Pasadena, Texas, expected to start up in 2021.

Baystar is a 50:50 joint venture between Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA and Novealis Holdings. Novealis is a joint venture between Borealis and NOVA Chemicals

“This new Borstar unit will more than double the site’s capacity and allow Baystar to provide our North American customers with a greater range of high-value-added and resource-efficient products,” said Diane Chamberlain, president of Baystar.

Baystar is also building a 1m tonne/year ethane cracker in Port Arthur, Texas, to supply feedstock for its existing 400,000 tonne/year PE units and the new Borstar PE unit.

Scientists have developed a recycling process that transforms single-use plastic bottles, and fabrics made from a common polyester material into more valuable products with a longer lifespan.

Their research, published in the journal Joule, could help protect oceans from plastic waste by boosting the recycled plastics market.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is strong but lightweight, resistant to water, and shatterproof — properties that make it extremely popular among manufacturers.

Although PET is recyclable, most of the 26 million tonnes produced every year ends up in landfills or elsewhere in the environment, where it takes hundreds of years to biodegrade.

However, even when it is recycled, the process is far from perfect. Reclaimed PET has a lower value than the original and can only be repurposed once or twice.

When the price of oil was over $100 a barrel, I was often derided for suggesting that level was a) elevated and b) unsustainable.

(I was also derided in 2006 for suggesting in Forbes the price might go as low as $20 by 2008, which it almost did, but not because of market fundamentals as I thought but rather due to the financial crisis.

Mea very culpa. But when the price soared in 2008 and I wrote columns titled “Investing for the Oil Price Collapse,” the response was beyond derisive, so tongue-stuck-out-emoji.)

Wittmann Battenfeld will present its latest injection moulding and automation technology at the Eurostampi event held in Parma, Italy, between 28 and 30 March 2019.

For Wittmann Battenfeld, this year’s Eurostampi focuses on digitisation and sophisticated process technology, which will be showcased in two injection moulding machines from the servo hydraulic SmartPower series.

The Wittmann 4.0 integration will be demonstrated on a SmartPower 120/525, in which the UNILOG B8 control system, the WITTMANN robot W918, is integrated with all connected auxiliary appliances, such as the TEMPRO plus D temperature controllers, GRAVIMAX blenders and DRYMAX dryers.

Bio-based” Reinvigorating Flexible Plastic Packaging Market, Recycling Solutions Gain Momentum: New FMI Study

This press release was orginally distributed by SBWire

As reported by a recent Future Market Insights study, flexible plastic packaging consumption will equate a valuation of over US$ 85 billion in 2019.

Sales of bags and sacks, notably in the retail sector, currently accounts for over a third of market share. While flat pouches remain preferred over stand-up pouches, the report projects growing adoption of the latter in the future.

A new collaborative project aimed at making black plastic easily recyclable has been awarded £800,000 by the government’s Innovate UK grant scheme.

The project is a joint effort between recycling compliance scheme Ecosurety, plastic innovations specialist Impact Solutions, reprocessors Impact Recycling and plastics injection moulder company McLaren Plastics.

The companies will be working to develop and bring to market Impact Solutions’ recycling technology, PolyMet, a process by which the pigment in coloured, rigid plastics can be removed without damaging the original plastic polymer.

After its acquisition of a PET plant in Egypt last year and in Nigeria this month, Indorama Ventures, one of the world’s leading producers in the intermediate petrochemicals industry, plans to invest $5.5 billion in its various businesses.

The global manufacturer of wool yarns plans to invest $5.5 billion over the next four years to further grow its fibres, chemicals and upstream business following a series of acquisitions in U.S, Brazil, and Germany in 2018.

According to SC Johnson, Windex bottles will be made from 100 percent recycled ocean plastic.

As part of its ongoing commitment to tackling the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, SC Johnson has announced it will launch the industry’s first product that uses 100 percent recycled ocean plastic in a major home cleaning brand. That product is part of the Windex brand.

“With over 5 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, conditions are continuing to get worse and worse,” said Fisk Johnson, chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, said in a statement. “The Windex bottle is just one of the many ways we are not only providing solutions to combat ocean pollution but taking action to make these solutions a reality.”

The capacities and production of bio-based polymers will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CGAR) of about 4 per cent until 2023, a report said.

This will be at about the same rate of growth of petrochemical polymers and plastics, said the “Bio-based Building Blocks and Polymers – Global Capacities, Production and Trends 2018-2023” report from the German nova-Institute.

The total production volume of all bio-based polymers reached 7.5 million tonnes in 2018, about 2% of the production volume of petrochemical polymers, a report said.
