-Pearlised BOPP Film Market: How Brands are Winning the Race?

One of the most preferred polymers in food packaging and in printing application is polypropylene due to its excellent properties like high-temperature resistance, low moisture resistance, and high stiffness.

To improve mechanical properties, this film is stretched in both directions and across machine to form biaxially oriented polypropylene films (BOPP film).

Fillers such as talc and calcium carbonate and pigments are added to BOPP film to provide a pearly aesthetic look and improve optical properties.

Pearlised BOPP film finds application majorly in cold drink packaging such as ice cream packaging, biscuits, sweets, and flavour snack packaging.

-Israelis at the forefront of fast-growing algae market

Several Israeli companies are taking advantage of the country’s ideal environmental conditions for algae farming.

For thousands of years, consuming algae has been part of the native diets of Africa, Central America, South America and Southeast Asia. But today, algae are much more than a wrap for sushi – they are also used to produce a wide range of products such as food additives, natural pigments, chemical-free fabric dyes, biodegradable plastics and biofuels.

Israel has exponentially expanded the country’s knowledge and presence in the algae industry by spearheading research, including developing algal-based technologies.

-Downward Pricing for Polyolefins, PET; Flat-to-Up for PS, PVC

Overall, slowed global demand and improved supply/demand balance scenarios are likely to keep prices of the five volume resins relatively stable.

As we got into the second half of the year, the pricing trajectory has been downward for PP, PET and PE. Actually, prices of PP and PET may bottom out this month, owing to typical inventory buildup in the July-August timeframe for the former and upward pressure from feedstock costs for the latter.

In contrast, prices of PE are generally expected to drop owing to a decline in global prices and an amply supplied market.

There’s an upward pricing trajectory for PS and PVC, driven by feedstock benzene in the case of the former and suppliers’ claims of tight supply in the case of the latter. However, in the case of both resins, all other key driving factors are pointing to a flat-to-down trajectory.

-Polypropylene (PP) prices rise in FEA and SEA

PP prices this week, witnessed a rise in the Far East and South East Asian regions. The price rise, was triggered by stronger import offers, from overseas producers coupled with deals, concluded at higher price levels in the region.

CFR Far East Asia, PP raffia and PP injection prices were assessed at the USD 1035/mt levels, while PP film prices were assessed at the USD 1055/mt levels, both up USD 20/mt from the previous week. BOPP prices were also assessed at the USD 1055/mt levels, a week on week gain of USD 20/mt. PP block copolymer prices were assessed higher at the USD 1080/mt levels, a week on week increase of USD 20/mt.

In South East Asia (SEA), PP raffia and PP injection grade prices were assessed at the USD 1060/mt levels, a week on week rise of USD 10/mt. PP film prices were assessed at the USD 1075/mt levels, a gain of USD 10/mt from the last week. BOPP prices were assessed at the USD 1080/mt levels, while PP block copolymer prices were assessed at the USD 1095/mt CFR levels, both up USD 10/mt week on week.

-BASF to unveil first polybutylene terephthalate for extrusion and thermoforming at K2019

On the occasion of this year’s K fair, BASF will launch and present its new product Ultradur B6551 LNI for extrusion and the worldwide first thermoformable PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) Ultradur B6560 M2 FC TF. An interdisciplinary team of chemists, physicists, and engineers developed the products from lab to reality.

Both new grades combine all the well-known characteristics of the Ultradur family like high melting point, low water uptake, high dimensional stability and good barrier properties. Though, up to now the melt strength of PBT was not sufficient to make it a preferred product for extrusion.

By connecting and branching the polymer chains via tailor-made additives, the experts of BASF gained a very high melt strength. Polymers Petrochemicals Biodegradable PA

-Fabio Perini creates eco-friendly packaging for tissue converting

Fabio Perini has developed a “green” primary and secondary packaging solution for tissue products that can adapt to current systems and existing equipment as part of the push to decrease plastic use in packaging.

To accomplish this, Fabio Perini had to identify the most suitable alternative to plastic for primary packaging. This material had to be not only eco-sustainable, recyclable and/or compostable, but also as versatile as the polyethylene in terms of availability, product protection, packaging options, printability and resistance to production-related mechanical stress.

-Oxford recycling: Wrong items wasting thousands, city council say

OXFORD City Council is reminding city households to put the right materials in their recycling bins and says £12,000 of taxpayers’ money was wasted in six weeks as a result.

It says most city residents ‘recycle very well’ but incorrect items mean good quality material can end up being rejected.

Recycling should be ‘loose, rinsed and squashed with any excess in a clear sack or cardboard box’.

Incorrect items in blue recycling bins include food and food-soiled items, black bin liners, nappies and textiles. If included, they can lead to an entire load being rejected.
